Aqua's Mom Posted June 27, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 27, 2012 We'll be on the Zuiderdam in December - our first HAL cruise. After reading the boards, we're considering booking an SZ guarantee. Looking at the worst case scenarios, our only concern is how windy the balcony is at the front of the ship? Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks! CruiserBruce Posted June 27, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Any balcony can be windy, particularly if the wind is quartering on that side of the ship.

We had a front cabin on our cruise, and on certain nights you could barely open the door to go outside on the balcony. We cruised the Caribbean in early January and it was quite windy. We cruised the Caribbean in early January and it was quite windy. I've been on a ship that was traveling at 25 knots and it was dead calm on the bow. It all depends on the apparent wind. We did a similar cruise on the Oosterdam and could barely open our balcony door when the wind was coming across the bow. Lots of really great views off that cabin for sure. Did the Panama Canal in 5001 and would book the same cabin again in a heart beat. Big room and the front window is wonderful.
Aqua's Mom Posted June 27, 2012 Author #6 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Thanks for your help. My husband suggested that those front cabins would be too windy to enjoy the balcony. I guess we'll stay with our VA.
AZWTRLVR Posted June 27, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 27, 2012 We were in 5001 on the Westerdam. LOVED IT! Especially the front-facing window. There are two things to consider....since the cabin is the first forward the curvature of the bow does cut space off of the verandah. Also, in booking a guarantee, it would probably be one of the last cabins assigned since it is a handicap-accessible cabin.
Typhoon1 Posted June 27, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 27, 2012 I wouldn't worry about wind as much as motion. If the seas get rough, being that far forward will subject you to more motion.
