cruise care through RCI

Recommended Posts

It is crappy insurance anyway - you are much better off getting insurance outside the cruise line. ;)

Correct. Especially if you have children since several policies include them for free. Cruise line insurance is "one size fits all" which means it may be a "bargain" if you are elderly but if you are young and healthy, not so much a good deal.

Third party the insurance is based on a combination of age and price of the cruise. Third party is door to door which is good to have if you plan any pre/post cruise, independent air, etc. as cruise insurance usually coverage does not begin until the cruise does unless you buy air, pre/post through them. You can, also, get pre-existing illness coverage with third party if you buy it within a certain amount of time after making your deposit which is important if you have anyone in your immediate family that might cause you to have to cancel like elderly parents, a brother with cancer, etc.

Mom, 75yr, looking for insurance incase she must cancel for any reason. (ill or family member ill). Travel companion was hoping not to purchase insurance, cause she would find another roommate, if something came up.

Both decided to get cruise line insurance. There was too much detail to read through using outside insurance company. They are just looking for full refund if they need to cancel cruise.

Opinion on choice?

I think you're fine with Cruise Care. It usually is less expensive for older folks, like me at 73. If your mom is taking medication for an existing condition, her meds cannot have changed nor can she have had a diagnostic test done in the 60 days prior to the purchase date of the insurnace. If this is not the case, then cancellation for reasons related to her condition will not be covered. If that happens she can still cancel for any reason and get the 75% refund, which I believe is in the form of future cruise credit, but not sure about that.
