Rare Copper10-8 Posted August 6, 2012 #26 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Something else we've been missing all these years. One of these years. Good times!:)
sail7seas Posted August 6, 2012 #27 Share Posted August 6, 2012 We've had some great New Year's Eves on HAL ships. :) They were always formal. Best ever was Rotterdam, 1999/2000 for Millenium New Year's Eve. HAL ran a 'dam' good party we still remember. :)
Sunshine91 Posted August 7, 2012 #28 Share Posted August 7, 2012 Several years ago my folks sailed with 3 other couples on a Panama Canal cruise over NYE. Can't recall which dam ship. But I do seem to remember Mom saying something about HAL flipping a port call from Sunday Jan 1 to Saturday Dec 31. It worked out best for everyone - the ship left the port a bit early on Saturday so everyone could get all dolled up for the big fancy-dress party that night. Mom said the all the festivities and countdown were held in the atrium. And then Sunday was a nice, easy relaxing sea day. Everything in the Caribbean port would have been doubly closed - it being Sunday AND New Year's Day. John & I live in a fairly rural area, but the beach resorts are about 20-30 minutes away. We refer to NYE as "amateur night" on the country roads & usually wind up staying in. :( One of these days......we'll be on a dam ship, somewhere. :) For those considering holiday cruises, just remember that many families with school-age children will also be cruising, especially over Christmas. Perhaps not quite as many over NYE, especially if it's a 10-day cruise that starts closer to Dec 31. ;)
Rare erewhon Posted August 7, 2012 #29 Share Posted August 7, 2012 I see on our itinerary that we will be in port 7am to 7 pm on Christmas Eve, will this still be Formal Night?
PatsyAnne Posted August 7, 2012 #30 Share Posted August 7, 2012 Thank you to the OP; we were wondering the same thing. We will be on a cruise over New Year's Eve for the first time this December (Maasdam). We have an additional decision -- since we will be in Curacao until 02:00 New Year's Day. Do we stay on board, or ashore for the actual turning of the year, and the fireworks? I guess there are worse problems to have  :) Ray in NH Years ago we were on a small ship cruise in Juneau having engine trouble that kept us docked in the harbor during the 4th of July fireworks. The ship's deck was the best place in town to watch the show. I guess it depends on where the fireworks will be.
Keith Rita Posted August 7, 2012 #31 Share Posted August 7, 2012 On our Ryndam New Year 2012 cruise, Dec 30 was Formal and Dec 31 was Formal Optional. The vast majority dressed Smart Casual.
sail7seas Posted August 7, 2012 #32 Share Posted August 7, 2012 I see on our itinerary that we will be in port 7am to 7 pm on Christmas Eve, will this still be Formal Night? If your next day, Christmas Day, is at sea then it is highly likely Christmas Eve will not be formal and Christmas Day will be. They sometimes have Christmas Eve formal but seeing you leave port so late, I think at most it will be formal optional.

Christmas Eve day will be at a tender port, Christmas Day is a sea day.
