Layover time needed for international flight

How much time layover time is need for international flights. Is it better to have your layover in JFK or Miami. I hear a lot of bad things about JFK

There was a recent thread about JFK and how people were saying bad things about it, yet many (most?) frequent fliers, including myself, jumped to its defense. I personally would take JFK over MIA for clearing immigration/customs. However, as mentioned, there are more factors to it - where are you coming from, where are you connecting to, what airline, what time of the day?
