Sailing down the Mississippi

Will be sailing out of New Orleans in December. How long does it take to get out to sea? At that time of the year will we still have enough daylight to see the sights? And last, what sights are there that we should be looking for?

It will take about 7-8 hours. And when I sailed from there years ago, the Casino was open just after we set sail. Did not have to wait until we were in International waters.

Sunset that day in New Orleans is 5:03 pm. We usually depart at 5 pm that time of year and within an hour it is to dark to see. But it only takes about 15 minutes to leave NO behind. After that it is just other ships, refinery's and small towns. As soon as we clear NO we usually go start our evening activities. If your cruise sails at 4pm you should have a couple of good hours to sight see. Enjoy your trip.

Depending on other traffic up and down the river, 7-8 hours when leaving is correct. Also, leaving at 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. in December, there will not be much daylight left at all. The most interesting sight (if there is still daylight) is about one hour after leaving port - the river makes a big bend and it appears as if you are headed back to New Orleans - you can see the skyline very well - maybe the city lights will be visible at night. That's about it other than passing tankers and various other ships. It was midnight when we hit the gulf and we were not awake to see it.

On the return trip, it was about 9:00 p.m. when we were getting back into the river. Happened to be out on our balcony and saw the river pilot boat come along side. Also noticed change in the color of the water where it became really muddy again. Takes about 9 hours going up river and I'm sure the time either way depends on the level and flow rate of the river.

It's still a fun trip though. Have a great cruise !! :)

One of the best sights is actually cruising the river in the dark - you get to see all the little towns along the river with their lights on. If the weather's nice enough, just standing out on deck and watching the lights go by is pretty cool. If anyone's awake when the ship enters the gulf, you then get to see the oil derricks lit up.

Yep! We cruised the in early June 2011. Our balcony was on the starboard side. We sat out there and watched people popping fireworks, we could see emergency vehicles, etc. We sailed on a Saturday evening and apparently kids were out parked and partying. They were all watching us go by. It's probably something they do every week.

I thought it was neat. Love going down the Mississippi.
