What is X on HUMP???

Can someone tell me exactly what the X on the hump is and how does it obstruct ones view from these balconies!!!??????

Hi Gagirl,

That I'm aware of, the X on the hump only exists on Solstice. Based on other comments, I do not believe it completely blocks the view. I have not sailed in any of the Solstice cabins with the X on the hump, so I cannot speak first-hand. Perhaps some of our other Cruise Critic members can share their experiences.

I hope this helps !

Hi Gagirl,

Im 99.9% certain, this issue does not exist on Equinox or Eclipse. Frankly, from what I've read on here, if I were sailing on Solstice, it wouldnt stop me from booking one of the X hump cabins either.

I think the X on the hump physically is a vinyl wrap similar to advertisements used to cover the exterior of buses. It does not completely block the view, but it does somewhat obstruct it. I assume that you know that the "X" is really a "Chi", the first letter in Greek of "Chandres" the predecessor of Celebrity. When Solstice came out someone at Celebrity thought that it was an improvement to move the Chi from the funnel to the side of the ship, but this was not well recieved by traditionists, and the Chi reverted to the funnel on subsequent ships. Despite the somewhat obstructed view, the hump cabins still have lots of advantages.

Here is a shot of the Solstice hump X which appears to be a transparent darken film on the balcony's panels similar to what is use for shading for automobile windows. It wouldn't deter me from booking a cabin with these panels.

We were on the hump on our first Solstice cruise back in 2008. It is just a film that is put on there and did not affect our view in any way. It was just like the film that is put on car windows to shade the view. It is only on a piece of the balcony. This would not stop me from booking this room again.

Here is a post I made on another thread:

It is only the Solstice that has the "X" on the hump balcony glass.

Here are a few pictures of our cabin on the hump.

Here is a list of all the hump balconies and which ones have no "X", partial "X" or entire "X".

Cabins with full “X” : 6220, 6230, 6221, 6231, 7272, 7278, 7227, 7233, 8240, 8242, 8267, 8269, 9280, 9282, 9225, 9227

Cabins with partial “X” : 6218, 6222, 6228, 6232, 6219, 6223, 6229, 6233, 7270, 7274, 7276, 7280, , 7225, 7229, 7231, 7235, 8238, 8244, 8265, 8271, 9278, 9284, 9223, 9229

Cabins with No “X” : 6216, 6224, 6226, 6234, 6217, 6225, 6227, 6235, 7266, 7268, 7282, 7284, 7221, 7223, 7237, 7239, 8232, 8234, 8236, 8246, 8248, 8250, 8259, 8261, 8263, 8273, 8275, 8277, 9272, 9274, 9276, 9286, 9288, 9290, 9217, 9219, 9221, 9231, 9233, 9235

Personally, I would avoid the "X" if possible -- I thought it did affect the ocean view if you were sitting on the balcony, but the location is great -- right near the elevators. And there are a lot of "no X" cabins.

Appreciate, Mac, your very detailed listing and the pictures. Your listing does not have some of the suites, such 1237 on the Solstice, listed or noted. Isn't that one having a bit of the "X" on the glass for some of those suites on the hump? Any added info? Is that "layer" on the glass a total "block" or more of a partial screening? How does it work and look in the evenings, at night, etc.?

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 102,165 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:
