Is this for a port visit?

If so you have options - it all depends upon what you want to do and how much you want to spend. You can catch the train for about 5 Euros each way and be in Rome in about an hour -- from the Termini station it is easy to catch one of the hop-on/hop-off busses for about 17-20+ Euros each -- get off and see what you want, but in the busy season or on weekends do not expect to have the time to tour many museums, the Vatican, or other sites.

At the other end of the scale you can book a private tour with a driver who will be waiting as you exit the ship; your Mercedes will get you to Rome in just under an hour and you can arrange to see the sites you want, or go with the plan proposed by the tour company/driver.

We just returned from Rome and spent 3 days wandering the city and just scratched the surface. With reserved tickets we still spent 4-5 hours going through the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel, and then more time touring St. Peter's. If you focus on the Vatican you can spend most of a day there and then you'll only get a glimpse (if that) of the Coliseum and many other sites. Buy a guide book, do some homework, and make your call.

Good luck! :)

I always start by thanking members of Cruise Critic that helped us overcome our anxiety's about DIY (do it yourself) tours in Europe. They are eurocruiser, cruisemom42, Hlitner, johnbull...they will provide you with detailed and accurate information.

Regarding Civitavecchia to Rome:

* Get off the ship as early as you can. Ouside the ship, there will be a free shuttle that will take you to the port gate.

* Outside the port gate is Civitavecchia. (There will be vendors open early to sell train tickets) Purchase the BIRG ticket (approx. 10Euros roundtrip) that allows you access to the train and metro in Rome.

* As you exit the port gate, turn right...the train station is approx. 4 1/2 blocks...an easy walk.

* Inside the train station, look at the monitor and find the correct platform for your train. Note: Make sure to validate your train ticket before boarding. It is approx. an hour train ride to Rome.

* Rome is a great city and relatively easy to walk to most of the sites. For us, we got off the San Pietro (St. Peter's) train station. The dome of St. Peter's Basilica is visible from the train station...another short walk...we just followed it.

* From St. Peter's, we walked to Castel d' Angelo, crossed the Tiber River to Piazza Navona, then the Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain. We decide to use our BIRG ticket for the metro and visited the Colosseum/Forum. We also used the metro to get to the main terminal (Termini).

* Give yourself plenty of time to return to Civitavecchia.

Hope this helps and Happy Sailing! :)

Go to your Roll Call. On that thread, you'll find others who will be on your same ship and sailing. Many times you can hook up with someone who has organized a small group tour and still has a couple of spots open.

If you need help finding your Roll call, just post the name of your ship and sailing date here and someone will help you.

not a clue what roll call is but ship is thomson dream sailing from palma on sat 28th july.

Just checked and I don't see a roll call for this sailing. There is one the week before and one for the week after, but not the 28th.

Go to your cruiseline's website & see what tours are offered. I also check out TripAdvisor dot com and viator dot com to see what tours are offered. Then you can decide what sounds good to you, tour, or do it yourself. Sometimes cruiselines offer a bus to take you to the town, then you explore on your own (more reasonable than a private driver/guide).

There is a ports thread on this website (at the top, small black letters under CRUISE CRITIC header), but you might also try europeforvisitors dot com and portreviews dot com to give you an idea of what you might want to see and do.

Head to your library and check out a Fodor's, Frommer's or Rick Steves travel guide for Europe or Italy. Have fun planning, then taking your cruise.

FWIW, there are two enormous cruise ships in port with you that day, the Liberty of the Seas and The NCL Epic. You'll be fighting for space on the trains, both coming and going, with these savvy travelers in addition to the usual commuters.

We just finished a good stay at Hotel Lirico, next door to the opera house and onlly about a 5 + min walk from the Termini station. Lots of reasonable dining options in the area. Good luck! :)
