Has anybody ever seen a celebrity on their cruise ?

. . most famous people are normal people who do normal things.

So true. I've run into some very famous people doing perfectly normal things. Such as: sitting next to Roger Staubach at a hamburger joint, standing in line at a bakery behind Dirk Nowitzki, running into Jason Terry at a car dealership, Emmitt Smith eating a couple of tables away at PF Changs, in the same line as Don Henley buying a corn dog at the Texas State Fair. Can't get much more normal than those things. :D

This is not related to cruising but here's my list based on working at Disney:

Liza Minelli - Crazy! She went on the Splash Mountain ride, got nervous in the middle of the ride, got off and decided to leave the facility using the back entrances. Guest Relations staff had a hard time finding her.

Sylvester Stallone - Rude and not very tall! He looks 6 feet on camera...he's not!

Nancy Kerrigan - Very nice and hospitable.

Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson (when they were married) - Typical Hollywood attitude! Excellent with the crowds but behind the scenes, they had the rudest personalities and very demanding.

Isabel Sanford (Weezie from The Jeffersons) - Loved her!! Wonderful personality and easy to get along with.

Alice Cooper - Very nice guy and an awesome family man!

2 that I know of, both on the Grand Princess in 1999. Was sitting at the piano bar listening to Roger Carr when this older, glamorous lady walks by and Roger pointed and announced "Cyd Charisse, ladies and gentlemen", and she did a movie star-type bow and wave.

Also on that cruise, Hootie and the Blowfish lead singer (and now country singer) Darius Rucker got married. He had a large group with him, but they were around the ship mixing and mingling, including at the first karaoke night. I was the first singer that night, and didn't realize it was him and some of his friends sitting at the next table until one of them got up and dedicated a song to "my friend Darius who is getting married tomorrow". If I had have known, I would have sang a Hootie song instead of Margaritaville LOL. I thought it was rather funny (or strange) that some of their photos from the wedding were in the photo racks in the gallery along with the rest of our pictures.

On the Tropicale in 2001, we had the actor/singer who played Carmine from Laverne and Shirley as a perfomer on the ship. He was only on the ship a couple days, but he hung out in the casino and piano bar, and was very pleasant with everyone.

Living near LA, we get a lot of star traffic in Santa Barbara. However, the only celebrity I've ever talked to (very briefly of course) was after a play in LA, Henry Winkler came around and said hello to everybody. Yes, as his reputation says, he truly is the nicest man in show business. He shook my hand, smiled and wasn't at all "Hollywood".

On the other hand, I think stars are pretty much the same as "regular" people. Some may be wealthy, but in the end, they're all just people. The unfortunate thing is when you meet the odd "star" who got the idea they are better than anybody else and give you that impression right away. I think most of the time, celebrities on vacation just want to be anonymous, maybe with a little polite recognition of their work while you're making small-talk in the buffet line. On a cruise ship, I imagine most of them are with family and really prefer to just relax and not be noticed.

The exception to the desire for anonymity would probably be the paparazzi attracting celebrities, who seem to be drawn to the public eye. I imagine if a paparazzi level celebrity were aboard a cruise ship they would have minders and their presence would have to be addressed early on in the voyage.

BTW, for an interesting read on narcissism in celebrities and US culture, The Mirror Effect gives some insight into what makes a celebrity these days.

I was curious who celebrities might cruise with. I am talking about actors, musicians, political figures or people in the news. Did they mingle with other cruisers or just stay to themselves ?

The older Osmond Brothers on a Carnival Cruise & Michael Godard (artist) on a Princess Cruise. I had a nice conversation with Michael Godard.

Someone said on the last cruise we were on (Aug 11), there was a Senator from Colorado. The most memorable one I knew of was playing blackjack with Tim McKyer who was a professional football player from the carolina panthers. Small talk at the table, and he goes "Last week before training camp". So I asked and he told me what he did. He then bought me all my drinks in the casino :)

I'm guilty of not recognizing people and if they are sports figures, forget it, I'd never know who they are.

I've seen a few celebrities in my life, but I've always left them alone. Unless they are standing there signing autographs for the public, why should they not enjoy privacy like the rest of us?

We did run into Cuba Gooding Jr. outside a restaurant once, he was posing for pics with the kitchen staff. I stuck my hand out and told him I enjoyed his work, he thanked me and shook my hand. On the other hand, I've read he's not been quite so nice to others. I can only figure that they, like the rest of us, have good days and bad. I cannot imagine a life where you can't do normal activities without having everyone be in your face because they have seen you in a movie or on TV.

The price of fame would be too high for me. I would like to try being rich, though :p. Of course, then I'd hire a private yacht or go on the top luxury lines, forget the main stream lines.

Not a cruise but. Back in the late 80s I was working in a hotel in N Carolina and Dom Deluise and Charles Nelson Reilly spent a week there. They always called me by name and Dom was always with the dirty jokes trying to embarrass me but it didn't work. Then he would say real loud "She is from New York, she can take it" Charles was a sweetheart and I enjoyed spending time with him. A few weeks later he had some reason to call the hotel and asked for me but it was my day off. It didn't mean much to me at the time but now that I am older I guess it was pretty cool
