Fog and Port of Galvaston

I can remember last year hearing lots of times that the Port of Galveston was fogged in and ships were either delayed in arrival or in leaving. Is this a regular thing that happens there? is there a certain time of the year that it is more prevalent?

Thanks!

Fog and hurricanes can occur on the entire Gulf and East coasts

Hurricanes in the summer and fall

Fog in the winter and spring

Make you plans

Buy insurance

Accept mother nature for what it is

Enjoy you cruise!

Buy insurance.

We cruised Jan 1 - 8th 2012. We were delayed boarding on the first, as the ship could not come into port until after 10am, due to fog.

We missed our flight home on the 8th, because we did not dock until after 2pm, due to fog.

We had been in Galveston from Dec 30th to Jan 1st, and did not see the beach from our hotel, which was directly across the road until the morning of the 1st. If our cruise had been scheduled for the 31st, we would have missed an entire day.

It was an experience, but one I would not do again at that time of year out of Galveston.

However, on the Gulf Coast, Galveston is the only one the Coast Guard shuts down for fog. NO, Tampa the ships run fog or not. Sailed out of NO two years ago when you couldn't see the bow, but normal speed down the river. As other posts have mentioned though, Galveston usually is only closed for 12-24 hours and then reopens. When we used to run the ship channel, it was only closed a dozen or so times a year. If it's your day, you anchor out until it clears.

That is not necessarily the case anymore

See other threads on subject !

And ships during this last year

did come into Galveston port and depart with fog.

This after meeting between

Port authorities, Pilots, Coast Guard,

And Cruise Lines and some resolution

To that issue.

We cruise in December always. And yes have been fogged in on land and spent a day in port couldn't leave but it is vacation and it is still better than being at work. Except for all the grouchy people who can't take any change in their plans.
