darceyg Posted September 2, 2012 Author #26 Share Posted September 2, 2012 There is nothing nicer than bagpipes, believe me. I am surrounded by world class pipers, family and work I hear the juniors practise every day. I also have done the Highland Dancing circuit for many years (I will just add, not me, my daughter) And I am proud to say my home town has produced many, many Champions. One local lad played with Madonna. Another one has just completed recording the soundtrack for the latest Disney film Brave. My friends brother wins some of the most prestigious awards in piping, so I think I know good piping. Just wondered why there was a piper? I appreciate a piano in the piano bar etc but just curious as to the piper? Oh .....and don't worry you'll hear him ok ..............tuning up. LisaGoeke Posted September 2, 2012 #27 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Loved hearing him on the Oasis and I will be seeking him out on the Allure next month. It was fun trying to "find" him when we'd hear him in the distance.;)
Sunebeach Posted September 2, 2012 #28 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Love me some bagpipes!! Love a man in a kilt too! ;) it's charming...and may not be everyone's cup of tea...I hate rap music...so to each their own! It's a good thing everyone doesn't have the same tastes in everyting... food, music and just everything... otherwise life would be really boring and you couldn't find a seat at some venues at all...
loubetti Posted September 2, 2012 #29 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Many a cruise on Cunard with a bagpiper giving us a send off as we pulled from the pier, but he was also on the pier, not the ship. Having a bagpiper give a ship a send off is nothing new. I always enjoyed it.
Lady Chew Posted September 2, 2012 #30 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Love the bagpipes! Love a man in a kilt! (especially if he is named Sean Connery!) Our high school nickname was The Highlanders ... and our mascot was Angus. There was a guy in our neighborhood who had the full regalia and played the 'pipes at all football games & other events ... one of my favorite memories! Topo Gigio Posted September 2, 2012 #31 Share Posted September 2, 2012 I saw one when Oasis was leaving St.Maarten and he went to the front of the ship. I thought it was a great idea.
teddie Posted September 2, 2012 #32 Share Posted September 2, 2012 We were on Allure begining of August? Heard bagpiper tuning up each evening. What is the significance? That's all fine and good... but isn't it about what the customer wants? When the Explorer slowly pulled away from the dock in St John on our NE cruise, a lone piper was on the dock performing for our send-off. For us, the sight and sound of a bagpiper in full regalia is very moving, and is always a great treat. It's something to enjoy and admire, and it's steeped in tradition and history. Why would any one question or disparage it? Enjoy it! Teddie
Scotty G Posted September 2, 2012 #33 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Bagpiper on Allure ? Why? Why not!! :D:D:D
HesterMofet Posted September 2, 2012 #34 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Very cool! I would love to hear a bagpiper playing *outdoors* on a ship! I have been lucky enough to hear a bagpiper at a dinner in Scotland. The only bad part was the dinner was indoors and those pipes are almost painfully loud in an enclosed area! Fain is a Scottish name, no? :D
Cruising89143 Posted September 2, 2012 #35 Share Posted September 2, 2012 That's all fine and good... but isn't it about what the customer wants? What's the big deal? It's not like he was playing 24/7 in your cabin.......
cruzincurt Posted September 2, 2012 #36 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Sure beats the "flash mob" dancing on the promenade. Or the waiters singing about "a big pizza pie". Adds some nice variety to the entertainment.
jimbri Posted September 2, 2012 #37 Share Posted September 2, 2012 I think it's great to have a bagpiper. There was a bagpiper when we pulled into Nova Scotia - loved it!
raerom Posted September 2, 2012 #38 Share Posted September 2, 2012 My DH was climbing up the rock wall half-way up...Bagpiper started playing just below him and DH said it gave him the inspiration to climb to the top!
cabs Posted September 2, 2012 #39 Share Posted September 2, 2012 The clue here is Richard Fain. He loves the bagpipers. He invited all the Pinnacle cruiser to his house for dinner last year and YES we were called to dinner with a bagpiper.
RCCLNYMETS41 Posted September 3, 2012 #40 Share Posted September 3, 2012 As previously mentioned, Richard Fein is the reason why the Oasis & Allure have a bagpiper. He talked about it in an interview (I think it was on the Mighty Ships episode about the Oasis' Maiden Voyage)
debache Posted September 3, 2012 #41 Share Posted September 3, 2012 When we sailed out of Harwich for our Baltic cruise, there was a group of bagpipers on the pier, I thought it was cool..

The Grumpus Posted May 2, 2013 #43 Share Posted May 2, 2013 On the Oasis, I really enjoyed his playing in the pub! Exactly. I was never really a fan of that style of music until we listened to him preform at the pub a few times. Bagpipes are not all he plays.
peteukmcr Posted May 2, 2013 #44 Share Posted May 2, 2013 My understanding is that it is no longer on Allure. As far as I'm concerned, thank goodness.

negc Posted May 3, 2013 #46 Share Posted May 3, 2013 That's all fine and good... but isn't it about what the customer wants? Based on a quick reading of the posts about this subject it would seem that Mr. Fain found something that struck a favorable chord with many RCI enthusiasts. Maybe he has a better feel for his passengers tastes than some want to admit.:) He gets paid big bucks to decide what his guests want and in this instance he seems to have been right on target.:)
reney313 Posted May 3, 2013 #47 Share Posted May 3, 2013 Well, if that is the case I'm heartbroken. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'll be very sad if he isn't on the Allure in 2014! Hopefully it's a temporary thing that he wasn't on that sailing.
maureencruiser Posted May 3, 2013 #48 Share Posted May 3, 2013 I used to live across the street from a Catholic church in Massachusetts and usually about once a month, there would be a funeral with a bagpiper. I would hear it and instantly, I would have to lay across my bed, looking out the window to hear him play. I would love to hear this on a ship, I haven't heard one since I moved to Virginia! cruzincurt Posted May 3, 2013 #49 Share Posted May 3, 2013 The bagpiper was just one more of the neat, unexpected, little surprises. Just like the art work scattered around the ship. How many people catch sight of the little dog statue on the promenade peeking into the "basement"?
Icruzthere4Iam Posted May 3, 2013 #50 Share Posted May 3, 2013 for me, it's Amazing Grace. if you listen to that song on pipes and fail to be moved, you have no soul. Couldn't agree more! As a retired LEO that tune on bagpipes carries a totally different meaning as it's played at funerals for fallen officers. Brings a tear anytime I hear it no matter what the occasion may be.
