Passenger overboard on Allure yesterday! (9/16/12)
Being new to cruising, when our DD graduated we sent her on a graduation cruise. If I knew then what I know now. I had no idea at the time they could drink at 18 when at sea. My choice would not to have been to have my DD experiance alcohol for the first time at sea without parental presence. But for the grace of God nothing happened. I am heartbroke for this girls family and what they are dealing with right now.

I am a little surprised if there was family on board why they did a sea day on Monday and waited to port on Tue. That would be horrible to be the family stuck on the cruiseship your child fell from.

Sue
When did she cruise? 18 year olds can't drink at sea and they haven't been able to for quite a while. They can, however, drink in many ports.

Regardless, this is a tragedy, but "falling" overboard is a incorrect term really. You can only "fall" if you are doing something you shouldn't. We all do stupid things in our youth and most of us survive them. I do find it hard to say "youth" for 21 since I was married at that age, but who knows what she was doing when she went overboard. It doesn't really matter right now, but there are many unanswered questions.

The Coast Guard on Tuesday evening gave up its search for a 21-year-old woman who fell overboard Sunday night from a cruise ship about 47 miles east of Fort Lauderdale.
"It's always unfortunate when we have to suspend a search, because our main focus is to local the individual and return her safely to her family," said Capt. Todd Lutz in a statement from the Coast Guard. More than 2,300 square miles were searched, according to the Coast Guard.

I can only imagine what the mood is like on the ship. Other articles mentioned she was traveling with her mom. I wonder if she will be getting off at the next port or continuing back to the US.
It must be a devastating feeling to have lost a child nonetheless while on vacation.

Regardless of how this young women went over it is still a tragic incident. There are hundreds of stories of young people who seem fine, but in reality they are an emotional mess. This is a tough world we live in and even for the strongest of people it can seem hopeless. I pray that they family will not blame themselves. It affected everyone on that cruise. Sad :(

I doubt there will be much more on this story. Of course, there will always be rumors when the CC's get back.

FOX13 News has learned the woman's mother was on board the cruise.
Per the family's request, the woman's identity won't be revealed, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Sabrina Elgammal said.

She just turned 39. Yes indeed it has been quite awhile ago.

For the rumor mill:

The two late developments ended a day in which the identity of the local woman remained a mystery.
No officials with the city have been contacted about the missing woman, and there doesn't seem to be any buzz around the area except for people wondering about her identity. Bartlett fire and police officials, along with Mayor Keith McDonald's office, said they had not been contacted about the missing woman nor informed of her identity.
Cynthia Martinez, director of global corporate communications for Royal Caribbean, said Tuesday afternoon the cruise line does not release the names of its guests or the people with whom they are traveling.
"We did not provide the media with information on where the guest was from — that information came from the U.S. Coast Guard," Martinez wrote in an e-mail. "Therefore, I will not be able to confirm or deny the guest was from Tennessee."

I'm on the Allure right now. It is definitely a very sad situation. The captain and crew definitely seemed upset all day Monday.

Here's what we were told or heard just talking to crew. Monday night a passenger reported something falling overboard. They started reviewing the CCTV cameras and confirmed it was a person. As soon as they knew it was a person they turned around and started searching with the coast guard and a Carnival ship. I young woman of 21's family reported her missing and confirmed it was her from the cameras.

They made 3 or 4 announcements that evening asking for a woman to come to guest services. Later the captain announced they had a report of someone going over the side and were searching.

They had all off duty staff looking in the water till 3am when the coast guard released the cruise ships and continued the search for the rest of the day.

The captain cancelled the Nassau stop and rescheduled for Saturday. I actually heard a very callous person complaining at guest services that this was messing up her holiday by us not stopping.

This is my 2nd cruise on RCCL and I feel the captain was very professional throughout this and from what I saw acted reasonably give this horrible situation.

We were on a cruise where our ship became part of a search for a man overboard on a cruise ship in front of us. We were a day late to our ports, but it was interesting that locals in the ports knew more details of situation than we knew.

The man on the other ship was never found, but strangely on the last night on our ship of that same cruise, a drunk father fell overboard while he was showing off in front of his kids by trying to stand on the railing. The ship stopped and turned around immediately to picked him up. He was bruised pretty good, but otherwise OK. I remember it well because we were having dinner and it was all we could do to keep the plates on the table. We saw him taken off the ship in Ft Lauderdale the next morning escorted by the police in handcuffs.

There was nothing on the news about the dad, we only learned of the details on Cruise Critic a few days later from the cruise director. The dad, his wife and two young kids were cruising with his wife's parents. I am sure his kids and inlaws will remember that cruise for a long time.

Hi folks, I have read this thread with interest and as it progressed..surprise!

Almost everyone seems to be assuming suicide or alcohol.

Has nobody ever had the misfortune of having their cabin door open unxepectedly while the balcony door is open? That is one major riptide of wind and most certainly is enough to force a person over that rail if they were leaning against it. On our first cruise we had an incident where it happened and almost eveything not nailed down in our room went ver that balcony!

Ever since that is something that all of us who travel are VERY careful about, esp now that my toddler is with us on all cruises.

I'm not saying this happened, just that there are exceptionally strange circumstances that can and do happen.
But, it is still an assumption. Maybe she was sitting on the railing to see something in the front or back of the ship or trying to get someone else's attention and slipped? Being along does not say it was intentional.

This poor girl and her family have to live with the results of whatever did happen. Many here are assuming she was suicidal, depressed, etc when maybe she was the happiest person in the world who just made an error in judgement??? If you were her family would you want to be hearing such things? If we need to assume, can't we think nice things?
I have a daughter exactly that age. The chances of a girl that age climbing up on the railing of her balcony after dinner in the darkness to "see something" are 1 in a million. Maybe you don't have girls or maybe you don't have kids that age....but a 21 year old girl climbing up in the dark onto her balcony to "see something"........ please don't make us feel bad for speaking in a very polite way about a very sad thing. No one is disparaging her or judging.

Common sense given the surounding circumstances leads most to one conclusion. And sometimes the "happiest people in the world" as you say, make a rash decision that has monumental consequences........especially when they are young and emotional.

I will be curious to hear more of the details and weigh their reliability. Its interesting to see how many news organizations just reprint the same thing. Every report I read says the ship resumes its intinerary in St Martin today, which should be St Thomas. But thats minor. Now that we have had 300 Thats sad, prayers go out, it will be interesting to hear more details. I'll be guest sevices was busy refunding Nassua excursions and making assumed port charge refunds. I wonder if formal night continued Monday night?

Are you kidding? You think a young woman of 21 years who weighs more than 100 pounds could be blown off a balcony? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on here. Blowing a chair or a tiny four pound table off a balcony is a lot different that blowing a 100 pound sack of potatos.
Perhaps a physics class might help here but the the terminal velocity and accelaration necessary to pick up a 100+ pound (most likely she weighed more) object and move it over the railing is the kind of wind producted in a category five hurricane.

The physics of it are impossible. The wind which comes from the door even if it were 125 mph would press a body up against the railing. To lift a person over a four foot railing the wind would have to be coming from the floor and it would probably have to be the equivelent of the wind produced by a 747 during take off.
