Might cancel my CCL cruise and go on the Epic. Couple questions.

I'm currently booked on the Carnival Liberty on the 24 Nov 2012 sailing, but my family is having serious reservations about it. The reasons are long and complicated and might start an argument, so I won't bore you with the details. I'm prepared to eat the cancellation fee.

My flights, hotel, and car service are already booked in Miami for the dates in question. The Liberty embarks on 24 Nov 2012 and disembarks on 1 Dec 2012. The NCL Epic matches up perfectly for those dates, so I won't have to change anything else other than the cruise itself.

Itinerary is secondary to my family and I. We are more about the ship experience than anything else. (I personally could take a 7 day cruise-to-nowhere and be entirely happy.) Although I much prefer the Liberty itinerary, the Epic itinerary is still fine with us.

We were spoiled by the suite life on the NCL Star last November, in the 2 bedroom family suite. So we're leaning heavily on the 2 bedroom family suite in the Haven on the Epic. We can't bring our oldest daughter as she's in university, so it's just the 4 of us...again.

Anyways, I have a couple questions about the Epic. I've searched, but I'm having a difficult time weeding through the vast amount of threads.

We will be booking a 2 bedroom family suite in the Haven.

1. These 2 bedroom suites in the Haven don't have those wierdo see-thru bathroom doors, do they? Our teen kids (16yo girl, 14yo boy) sharing the small bedroom will both have an absolute mental breakdown if their bathroom is like that. (you know how kids that age are, don't you?)

2. Looking at photos of the Epic 2br suites, it appears there is a sliding door between the living area and the master bedroom/bathroom area. Is there also a curtain between the master bed and the master bath area? (the Star had both.) My GF is a late sleeper and she liked that I could get up, close the curtain, and get myself ready while she slept in complete darkness.

3. On the Star, we all loved The Blue Lagoon. What is the equivalent 24 hour restaurant on the Epic?

The bathroom for the smaller bedroom is a normal private bathroom rather than being deconstructed into separate areas (and visible from the rest of the cabin) like in the non-suite cabins. That being said, the actual bathroom door is frosted glass (heavily frosted).... but the layout is not conducive to seeing in there. The whole smaller bedroom suite area has a regular door between it and the hallway/main living area. Also - unless one was standing right outside the frosted door in a little 2 foot by 2 foot area, there would never be any chance to even look in the direction of the bathroom door.

Yes, a thick curtain can be pulled to close off the master bedroom from the master bathroom.

O'Sheehans.

I just posted a number of pictures from our recent stay in 16001 - which was a front-facing, slightly larger 2-bedroom villa on the Epic. That thread is here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1711317

We love the Epic (so much so that we'll be back on again in 7 weeks - disembarking on the day you're embarking!). Lots to do on the ship and you'll absolutely love the Haven.

Since your sailing date is the day after the American Thanksgiving and going into the Christmas season, The Epic might be sold out of the accommodations that you would like. If you have not done so, I would suggest that you check with Norwegian as soon as possible either with a phone call or looking online.

Oh, they're available. I already checked.

EDIT. I'm going to wait until Monday to book it. I just got off the phone with my NCL rep, and he said there's a promo starting on Monday (the 1st of October) that will give me some OBC and such. There's plenty of Haven 2 bdrm family suites available so we don't anticipate a problem. As soon as he gets in the office on Monday morning he's calling me.

Plus, one of my credit cards is offering me triple points for purchases made during October, so it's win-win-WIN for me!

Have been on both the Liberty and the Epic, and I love them both.

We sailed the Epic last December, and we are going again this December, and I would suggest that everyone who likes to be entertained sails the Epic at least once. The ship is a "floating Las Vegas" with great restaurants, Casino, the Ice Bar, the Cirque, the BMG, Legends etc. etc. etc.

Best of luck :)

I am also on the 24th sailing. Sailed on the Epic 2010. I have not been on the Liberty, but I am platinum on Carnival but prefer NCL over Carnival.. I was originally booked on the Dream with my fam for Thanksgiving week. I cancelled with them to be on the Epic. I enjoy being with my fam, but the opportunity came up for the Epic and sorry to say I rather be on the Epic than with the fam...and also it will be my birthday cruise.. Hope you can join us...

We'll actually be on the same sailing. Check out the roll call board if you do decide to come.

Look forward to seeing you on board (and I want an invite to come up and see the Haven!!! ;) ).

Me too!!!:p

We are on the Epic the week before you. O'Sheehan's is absolutely amazing. It is a very large sports type bar/restaurant with pool tables, air hockey tables, a few video games, tv screens, a great bar, and wonderful food served (free) all the time. The Haven is wonderful because of the grill for breakfast and lunch, the lounge that looks out on the pools/slides and the best concierge at sea, Adrian, who will be the concierge for both our sailings. And if you are a casino person, it's huge! This is our third Epic sailing and we love it. We are booked on the Breakway for next Thanksgiving!

any details on next week's promo? is it the epic sailings only?

He didn't really say. It sounded like it was more than just the Epic, but I really cannot say with any degree of certainty.

One of the things he said to me was "looks like we'll get you some spending money while on board" which obviously says there is going to be an OBC in the promo.

Anybody know what they mean by "$300 in e-coupons"? Is that where they give you a bunch of dinner-for-two coupons in a few specialty restaurants, a tray of chocolate covered strawberries, a $x spa coupon, etc....

I remember when I booked the Star last year, I apparently missed that by about 2 days.

All I really care about is the OBC, to be honest. The e-coupons will be nice though (if I'm assuming correctly as to what they really are.) The reduced deposit doesn't apply to me for this sailing. And nobody but me books our flights, regardless of the credits involved. (3rd parties always louse it up somehow. I don't even let Expedia do it any more.)

Good luck with your decision. I love NCL and the Epic but am anxious to try Carnival 2.0 changes and will be sailing on the Liberty tomorrow.

Have fun! Please let me know how your cruise goes. I'd really like to know!

We were anxious to cruise the Liberty ourselves. But, like I said earlier, we started having doubts about our decision. We absolutely loved the Freestyle of NCL. The concept suited us to a tee. We are exactly the kind of people that freestyle was designed for.

After booking the Liberty we were all quite excited. Then a week or so passed and the more we talked about it, the more we learned about Carnival and the Liberty, the more hesitant we became. We kept thinking back to how much we absolutely loved the Star and the NCL Freestyle concept, and how it suited us to a tee.

It turns out we were all thinking the same thing, but nobody wanted to say it out loud. That is until I spoke up and calmly said "want me to see what NCL has during that exact time frame?" And everybody agreed, without hesitation, that if we can find an NCL ship in Miami on the 24th of November, and comes back in the 1st of December (so we don't have to change our flight schedule) we'd consider it.

And bingo. The Epic fell right into the gap perfectly. I said to my family "Well, it looks like I can cancel Carnival and book us on the Epic". I barely got the words out of my mouth when everybody, in unison, yelled "DO IT."

So that's what I did.

I know exactly how u & your fam feel... Spring of last year I went on the Valor with my fam. I was really bored after sailing on the Epic that past Thanksgiving. Well Thanksgiving last year my daughter in law planned a cruise for her side of the fam.. for the Valor(again) ... my heart was not in it...could not do it again...so used my timeshare and went to Mexico. This year she planned the cruise for Thanksgiving on the Carnival Dream which is one of their new ships. I booked but the only think I could think bout was NCL.. wishing we had booked on any ship, it did not matter.. cause I too fell in love with freestyle.. I got hooked with freestyle when we sailed on the Spirit some years ago.. Carnival freestyle dining is not the same. Welll..when NCL had the sale with kids sailing for free.. I thought here's our chance..welll... it did not work out.. the fam wanted to go on the newer ship for Carnival :(.. I thought I was stuck with Carnival....but after chatting with NCL..found out I could sail on the Epic with my Harrah's Total Rewards membership and get a discount.... so I cancelled... and here I am.. really hope it work out for u and the fam... and again hope to see u on the ship:)..

Just As to what you heard about Carnival that would make you cancel after final payment date and lose money.

We'll be going on the Liberty for the 3rd time in December. Personally, I really enjoy the Liberty, but everyone is different. If you have specific questions about the Liberty, I'll be glad to try and answer.

My mom and I booked the Epic for next year, and we're really looking forward to a new experience. My mom is an avid cruiser, and has cruised all the major lines. Her next is on the Equinox. Looks fantastic!

The more I read, the more I hear that there are more similarities between NCL and CCL. Looking forward to finding out for myself.

Well, I know it means absolutely nothing but my opinion is that you totally made the right decision.

I hope you guys have a blast! :D
