nycruise Posted October 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2012 In the good old days before the Lido Deck & alternative restaurants, when you ate 21 meals during the course of a one week cruise at the same table with the same waitstaff, tipping was easy. Now that there are automatic tips, and we always choose Anytime Dining, are additional tips required for the wait staff. On our most recent cruise, we ate all breakfasts and lunches in the Horizon Court. The 7 dinners were divided between 2 Dining Rooms & we were never seated with the same waitstaff, so we never saw the same servers twice. We did notice one evening that a couple left $5 at the table when they left. I was wondering if that is now becoming the norm, i.e., leaving a tip each evening, or is the automatic tip sufficient when you have a different staff each evening? PeteC22 Posted October 23, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 23, 2012 No. They just didn't know how the auto tip thing works.
skynight Posted October 23, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 23, 2012 We only tip extra for ATD if we get the same waiters for a number of days. This has happened, but only a few times. We normally don't tip extra for the ATD.
Happy2Crews Posted October 23, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 23, 2012 One should not underestimate the value of leaving a couple of buck on the table for someone that has gone above and beyond. Most of the staff work hard, and long hours. And while some do not understand English very well most recognize the language of a dollar bill for a job well done. Sometimes it's the little gestures that makes the biggest impact. :)
caribill Posted October 23, 2012 #7 Share Posted October 23, 2012 The auto-tip was introduced about the time anytime dining started on Princess. This was done mainly to allow the staff there (and the buffet and other behind the scenes food personnel) get their share of tips. Extra tipping is not expected in anytime although some people do it, especially, as another poster said, when they received great service from the same waitstaff there all the cruise. Perhps better phrased; extra tipping is always appreciated and some people do it but it is not customary.
Loonbeam Posted October 24, 2012 #9 Share Posted October 24, 2012 Two things to consider - it's possible the party in question removed the auto tip and thought they were delivering direct. Or they just felt something extra was warranted. If we find a server we like and request for the cruise, like we did on the Island, that usually means the service was stellar enough to warrant a little extra.
