Hi All:

Can any of you cruisers who have previously been to Buenos Aires recommend a restaurant for our roll call to meet for dinner the night prior to our cruise. We are looking for something that has local flavor, fairly reasonable prices, and can accomodate a group of approximately 20. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

If you want local flavor, the you are talking about a steak house. One of the more upscale that will accomodate a party of 20 is Mirasol de la Recova (expect to spend about US$ 50 pp at the black market rates, 1/3 more at offical). There are lots of cheaper places. For a smaller steak house that might squeeze in 20, call 1880 in San Telmo.

I like Vasco Frances - very typical Basque cuisine with great seafood and paellas. It would be fine for a large party. Lastly, you might consider a place like Plaza Mayor, kind of festive old world establishment.

I have taken a group of 20 or so university students doing a study abroad program to 1880 before....they fit several tables together for us.

We ordered a lot of different entradas (appetizers), main dishes and desserts to share. It was a great way to introduce local cuisine to students. Among the highlights...grilled provolone cheese rounds, empanadas, and chinculenes (not for the faint of heart.,..grilled lamb small intestines) for appetizers, grilled steaks (lomo, bife de chorizo and ojo de bife) and pork, and flan or crepes for dessert. They have a decent selection of reasonably priced wines, too. This place oozes local charm, with signed caricitures of local futbol players on the walls. Tables in front overlook a park.....which is filled with children laughing and having a good time on Sundays.
