svmodi Posted November 21, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2012 Has anyone ever done an island tour by hiring a taxi/driver from the port for the day? Just wondering how much it would cost to do so and if it is cheaper than doing a tour through a private company. We are interested in seeing the usual sights - Fort George, Governor's Residence, Hell, either the Turtle Farm or Dolphin Discovery Park, some beach time on Seven Mile Beach and shopping in George Town. We would also like to do a semi-submarine tour after the island tour. Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
cb at sea Posted November 22, 2012 #2 Share Posted November 22, 2012 The beach and shopping do NOT need a tour guide. Shopping is easily walkable....just cross the street from the dock and shop till you drop! The Beach is an easy bus ride...you really don't need an excursion to do either of those things. Can't help with the Fort, Governor's residence or the other "tourist" spots.
Traveling Library Posted November 22, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 22, 2012 When you get offthe ship thereare lots of taxi & jitney drivers. Price drops the farther you getfrom the pier. Ourdriver took us to the Turtle Farm (look thru the gift shop windowfor free), Hell, beach stop. At thebeach some in our jitney stayed there. We returned downtown & walked the back streets. Jitney was $15 to $20 per person 3 years ago.
releck97 Posted December 16, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2012 You might want to check out what Joe Stebbins says over at Cayman Activity Guide. Although he will only promote businesses that advertise with him, his advice is usually sound and I've saved a considerable amount of money from the discounts offered through CAG. I travel to GC every year for a dive vacation and also visit regularly on cruise ships. He mentions Holiday Travel as a possibility and points out that taxis charge 3 times the regular rate at the pier because the government considers any taxi a "tour operator" when at the pier which puts them in a different category. Google for the url.
