futrmd Posted November 26, 2012 #26 Share Posted November 26, 2012 Ooh can you imagine the "Live From" reports we'll be seeing now... Trainman might just have to go on a cruise again to try it out lol Sent from my Speak & Spell using Tapatalk That's what I was thinking! Looking forward to lots of LIVE threads. dodgersmom Posted November 26, 2012 #28 Share Posted November 26, 2012 Called RC to ask about other ships having this and (not surprisingly), they had no idea what I was talking about. Told me that there were no Internet packages on any ships other than the minutes for purchase posted on their website. It does seem like they are usually the last to know. As someone who is a coorporate trainer by profession, this is frustrating as obviously their agents are not made aware of things.
scottct1 Posted November 26, 2012 Author #29 Share Posted November 26, 2012 So far its working great. As I type this I am sitting in my lounge chair on the deck of my owners suite room. We are currently docked in Nassau and I am out here with my laptop. Even though I paid for the one device plan I am able to log on from my iPhone and check mail with the laptop on. I have never had to log back into the laptop even when I shut it down and turn it back on. On the iPhone though I have to keep logging in every 10 minutes or so, but thats ok I am on vacation. :) I asked if unlimited internet was being rolled out to other ships and was told they didn't even know they were getting it until they got the new flyers in. A lot of stuff is blocked though, for example I can't send an iMessage on my iPhone to my son. I can not check for app updates in the itunes store. I had a friend who owns a radio station have an issue and he wanted me to log into his system to take a look... but port 8000 is blocked. And finally a friend sent me over joke which he said was very funny.. I clicked on the link and was told that Adult / Porn sites are blocked. (I guess it was a dirty joke) :D But overall it works great and I love sitting out here on my laptop not worrying about time and my bill. :D

scottct1 Posted November 27, 2012 Author #32 Share Posted November 27, 2012 Sorry to bug you, but have you tried to facetime with anyone? Thanks, Andrew I tried it last night, and while it said it was trying to call out my father said he did not get any Facetime Requests. I can also not sent iMessages to my son. I am guessing those ports are not open.
sherilyn70 Posted November 27, 2012 #33 Share Posted November 27, 2012 If they are going to offer unlimited time it is in their best interest to block applications or websites that use high bandwith. So I'm not surprised.
bilyclub Posted November 27, 2012 #34 Share Posted November 27, 2012 so that begs the question.....will this be fleet wide???? If so, what will the rate be on 3/4/5 nighters etc?? finally got thee old "Cybercabin" back again. (which in the old days was $100/week I want to say) Cybercabin was $20 a day, last time I used it. So I'm not surprised. That makes a lot of sense, which then makes me wonder if apps like Netflix (or other movie/streaming apps) work? Only 12 days to our next cruise, and I was planning to leave the iPad at home. Would love some intel on this if anyone knows. Thanks! Trainman might just have to go on a cruise again to try it out lol Sent from my Speak & Spell using Tapatalk I was thinking the revenue resulting from the various live reports may have been in incitement for RC to make this change. I think I read something somewhere that indicates RC was going to a new provider themselves at Sea. I would think RC is aware they are competing with land all-inclusive and this is being a selling point for more places that have wifi included. Darkwolfe Posted November 27, 2012 #40 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I had called C&A for another issue this morning and asked about this and the new drinks plan. As expected, the rep hadn't heard anything about either one yet. She still had the various minute limited packages for the internet access. Second: I doubt (unless there have been major upgrades) that the dialup speeds of the ships internet would be able to come close to stream video. It would be nice if it could stream Pandora

Although, I have to admit, they won't ALL be in my cabin. I get to share that with only my DH.

Ilya Posted December 6, 2012 #44 Share Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) Just returned from the Allure of the Seas Cruise and I can confirm the Unlimited Internet deal! Since I had to do some work on board, this was a very welcome addition! We were in a regular ocean-view cabin, not a suite - I think this offer is available to everyone. And if you are a Gold-level member or above, you can get an additional discount through the coupon book in your cabin! In spite of the unlimited deal, the Internet connection was reasonably fast throughout the ship. Edited December 6, 2012 by Ilya
Heroic_Kaizer Posted December 7, 2012 #45 Share Posted December 7, 2012 I will be boarding Allure of the sea ship in 2 weeks and was planning to get this plan to stay in touch with my GF. Does Whatsapp work with the wifi? I hope so, but since someone here mentioned they couldnt send a imessage, im afraid it might not work. Can anyone confirm whatsapp would work? THanks
kamusta1 Posted December 7, 2012 #46 Share Posted December 7, 2012 I am on Allure right now and have the unlimited package. Whatsapp does indeed work. iMessage is working for me, FaceTime is not. Skype video chat is working extremely well. I was able to walk around the whole ship on a video chat. It worked inside and outside. Internet speeds aren't bad at all even during peak times. The whole system was upgraded a few weeks ago.

The whole system was upgraded a few weeks ago. Good to hear that speeds are still ok. That's what I would be a bit worried about. I hope magicjack works too so I have the freedom to phone home for free. Now I'll just surf the net on the ship instead of wasting my time at ports looking for cheap internet. Great move by RCCL since I don't believe any of the other mainstream lines offer this. The price is just slightly higher than what you'd find at the high end hotels that charge for internet.
