CarolRoy Posted December 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted December 5, 2012 Thinking of doing the Gem out of NYC departing on March 31, 2013 Easter Sunday. Do you think there will be a lot of kids on this 9-day cruise from NYC to the Caribbean?

Rapsmac Posted December 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 5, 2012 We get off the gem that day. Our kids are out of school the week we are gone. A lot of other schools are of the week you are thinking About. If its a highly booked ship expect a high number of kids. We did a 10 day on princess last year on this week and some of the crew we spoke to said it was the most kids they ever had. If you don't like kids on board with you and you have the option to wait a week. Wait. It may also be cheaper.
jdvmd Posted December 6, 2012 #5 Share Posted December 6, 2012 Definitely going to be kids on this one as it is a lot of school's spring break in the south and midwest.
Rare mking8288 Posted December 6, 2012 #6 Share Posted December 6, 2012 I recall reading this a while back about the Gem (and it's true for the Jewel sailings that we're on) - you can expect lots of kids on the ship - depending on what is how you define "lots" of ... You can always expect younger children (toddlers, day care & pre-schoolers) as kids sailing with their parents, school-age children & teens up to high schools as "kids" and then, the college "kids" - all of them will be seen on the ship, in & out of/around the pools and buffets as well as various restaurants & lounges. NCL Ships like the Gem sailed full typically with about 3,000 (double occupancy being just under 2,500 - roughly) - 500 or 600 kids are not unusual with 1,000 to 1,200 (triple & quad-occupancy) being consider the expected counts during school breaks & holidays. Gem's 9 day East Caribbean run for 2012 Thanksgiving had 1,000 +/- out of NYC. One can usually find a quiet spot or two to relax, read & enjoy, besides the cabin or stateroom - and, we all know how crowded the pool decks can become in warmer climates - plus the hair hogs will be out in force. There is a curfew policy - "At 1:00 am guest 17-years-old & under must be out of public venues and in their staterooms unless they are actively participating in a scheduled activity or with a parent" The place for them to hangout is the video arcade on deck 12 as that's open 24 hours daily. Unless you are worried about the college kids ...
