Bringing Wine & Beer Onboard

Wine - in checked suitcase or carryon bag?

What's the best way to bring beer onboard - suitcase, carryon, reusable shopping bag, in plainview with a luggage tag?

Thanks!

We always carry our liquor and at least a 12 pack with us in our carry on and pack our wine in the checked luggage. Never had any problems.

Just an FYI cruise terminals in Florida are checking for anything above 2 bottle of wine.....

They weren't checking anything in Fl on Nov 12 th or in LA on Nov 26 th. - just the typical scanning they've done for years. We carried on our 4 bottles of wine 1 bottle rum and a 12 pack of beer.

Can you please elaborate on your Florida experiences?

Latest family/friend experiences: (Princess/Carnival Ships)

Beer NO NO

Coolers turned away.

Seal on any bottle of water or soda broken, not allowed.

Send Water thru with a luggage tag on it otherwise may be delayed while they check each bottle. You want to hear others grumble try this.

Case of wine was denied.

Carry 2 of bottled wine. Nothing said.

Sealed Soda and Water no issue. They will turn water bottle upside down. I think HLS looking more for accelerants than booze. My opinion.

Sending booze thru luggage more likely to be found. They ships security is on a mission, and they have statics that monitor their success at finding contraband including coffee makers and extension cords. Yes one person sent to naughty room over case of water in luggage; they turned them up side down one by one also.

If I wanted to smuggle extra wine, I would carry two and put one in each suitcase. :D. (Suggest Diapers see Amazon for wine in luggage then put inside of extra large 2.5 gallon zip lock bag just in case.)

On Princess you can get some liquor pre-ordered to you room. Prices fair still cheaper than bar service prices.

Next Cruise I will carry two bottles of wine and either Hansen Ginger Ale or Canada DRY with 2 limes for hubby's Crown being delivered to State room.

I never have tried to carry limes on board, I may lose them.

Which ship at which terminal on which date?

The security people at the terminal x-ray manchines are not cruise line employees and seldom have the time to closely inspect a number of bottles individually. Even if they did, since they work for the government and not for the cruise line, they do not care what the cruise line restrictions might be.

Every so often they do Marsec drills where they do more detailed inspections. I could see them checking bottles when one of those is active.

Earlier this year.....mixed together what reported as seen and what happened to some personally...

The worst.....they were in a large group on Carnival and lots of stuff taken from the group albeit younger than me group...some stuff like coolers and two case of beer and case of wine...actually stopped by Carnival personnel as the groups came in...they were told throw away all open containers including water..at least one maybe more pocket knives lost during X-ray .... on the ship a dozen or so of them called to naughty room for all sorts of extra bottles...and questionable mouthwash bottles....one rum runner was actually in luggage and found... .spring breakers...3 day Bahamas not sure ship on would have been March or early April 2012 and I believe Miami????

They carried into terminal instead of check with porter in porter handled luggage (mistake delayed their boarding process other passengers gave them evil eye) >>>>Princess was the case of water allowed but checked.....that is why my opinion about checking for accelerants... It was Ft. Lauderdale 40 to 50 age group....I believe they went to Mexico so Western Caribbean out of FLL

..note:..porters told a couple on my last princess week long cruise to check water with them and put a luggage tag on for them....and I have seen that this year on X line Celebrity Millie Jan 2012 also....

Tampa 2 bottles of wine on a carnival ship no issue but a small coffee maker was held ...age: retired couple ....I believe this was a short cruise maybe in May around Mother's Day.....

No info on Port Carnival...

....living in Florida cruise activities are talked about like the weather esp. amongst my family and friends circles since some of then are TA's...

This must be new as we have always put a luggage tag on a CASE of wine and had it delivered to our cabin. Never have taken beer. Booze travels in rum runners. Diet tonic, ginger ale, and non caffine Coke go in carry on bag.

Am I mistaken or did all the problems occur on Carnival. I don't see any from Princess.

That's what I was wondering, Paul. I would be very interested in hearing first-hand reports from Princess passengers.

Carnival is very strict with their wine/alcohol policy. Never have heard of any such problems with Princess. Just one of many reasons that it's our favorite cruise line.

I thought Princess and Carnival were "sister" companies. This year I have heard more about issues with cruise embarkation than in the past 7 years. The is also the threat of stepped up enforcement for 2013; since my sail date is Jan 2013, I guess I could be a test run....any one want to send me a free case of wine to stick a luggage tag on?

We boarded the Ruby Princess in FLL terminal 2 on Nov 11 and saw NO evidence of them caring what was in your carry on in regards to liquids. Although we only had two bottles of wine I saw others with cases. We also carried on water and no one asked to see it. What was more strictly enforced was alcohol being brought on in ports.

Princess and Carnival are both owned by Carnival Corporation, hence your thought about sister companies. That said, Princess and Carnival are independent operating entities with their own management, markets, ships and policies. Just cuz it happens on Carnival does not mean it happens on Princess and vice-versa.

Other than the Corporation granting stock owner's some on-board credit, there isn't much I've seen that is enforced across the operating companies from the corporate level. If there is, I'd be happy to learn!

That's about the only cross-over I have noticed as well, but then I don't know much about other cruise lines.

Overall, I think that Carnival has done a brilliant job of developing different cruise lines to cover all markets:

Carnival Cruise Lines (23 ships)

Princess Cruises (17 ships)

Holland America Line (15 ships)

Costa (15 ships)

P&O Cruises (7 ships)

Cunard (3 ships)

Seabourn (5 ships)

AIDA (8 ships)

P&O Cruises Australia (3 ships)

Iberocruceros (4 ships)

I have no interest whatsoever in sailing on Carnival Cruise Lines as it sounds too restrictive and smacks too much of the hoi polloi (think wet T-shirt contests) for my tastes. After reading all of the wild stories I have about people getting drunk on Carnival, it is not surprising that they are so restrictive about bringing booze on board, although it obviously doesn't work.

I have, however, enjoyed Princess, HAL and Cunard and would be willing to give the rest a try, after we have exhausted all Princess itineraries--if, of course, we live that long. :p Come to think of it, I don't even think I have heard of Iberocruceros. So many cruises, so little time. :)

Was recently on the Zaandam and met a couple who brought two cases, yes two cases of wine on (port was San Diego) with no trouble. It was delivered to the cabin. I always bring on a jug of cheap wine either from the US or pick it up in the Caribbean or Mexico (depending on the line and cruise). No problem with HAL or Princess. With Royal Caribbean, I sneak on and the JA's have never caught me. It's a sport.

I lose more money in the casino than to the alcohol ****s.:):)

We boarded Ruby Princess in FLL on Nov. 25 and carried on 4 bottles of wine and 12 pack of beer in our carry-on. In our checked luggage was another 12 pack of beer. We had no problems with alcohol carried on or in luggage. In St. Martin, we came back on board with 6 pack of beer - also no issues.

This is similar to what we have experienced with Princess when boarding at Port Everglades for each of the past 7 years....

We have never had a problem at FLL with Princess either.

We always go to Total Wine and buy several bottles along with a case of beer and simply set it on the scanner belt and no one has ever said a word about it.

The liquor is placed inside a carryon bag and it goes right through as well.

Mike:)
