maria1963 Posted December 13, 2012 #1 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Hi all, we will be going on our first cruise in January on the grand princess. I am getting really excited now however I do feel there are many factors to consider which as first timers is very confusing! Anyway I am keen to understand something about attire. I'm ok with what to wear but hubby is nattering. I believe in a 2 week cruise there will be 2 formal evenings and he is sorted with a dinner suit etc but on the other evenings what is acceptable for smart casual. He is not scruffy in fact he is stylish but definitely not a leisure wear / chino type either. Will smart linen shorts be acceptable in the restaurants ? HomelessBear Posted December 13, 2012 #2 Share Posted December 13, 2012 At dinner, shorts are not acceptable in the dining rooms. Lunch is OK though and of course the buffet anytime. On our previous 14 night cruises, we've usually had 3 formal evenings.
maria1963 Posted December 13, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Ok thanks I appreciate the response. I've seen such mixed feedback on here. Of course dress is so subjective and one persons smart casual is another's ' wouldn't be seen dead in' ! That gives us a steer though.
BexLulu Posted December 13, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Not an answer to your question, but just to let you know we are on the grand for a 14 night cruise starting the week after you, and our cruise personalizer says we have 4 formal nights. satxdiver Posted December 13, 2012 #5 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Even though you have booked on a 14 day cruise, this is actually a b2b cruise. You will be returning to FLL on the 12th and then going out again. Therefore there will be 4 formal evenings with two each week. As stated below shorts are not allowed in the MDR at night but are allowed for breakfast and lunch. At night men must wear a pair of pants/jeans and a collared shirt such as a polo type or a button shirt as a minimum. On formal nights men must wear a dress shirt and pants (no jeans) again as a minimum.
paul929207 Posted December 13, 2012 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2012 There will be two formal nights each week since it can be booked as two 1 week cruises.
MilliesMom Posted December 13, 2012 #7 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Smart Casual Passenger attire should be in keeping with what they would wear to a nice restaurant at home. Skirts/dresses, slacks, and sweaters for ladies Pants and open-neck shirts for men Inappropriate dinner wear such as pool or beach attire, shorts, ball caps and casual jeans (with fraying and/or holes) are not permitted in the dining rooms. Shoes must be worn. Formal When formal nights are held, please observe the dress code in the Traditional Dining and Anytime Dining venues for the enjoyment of all our guests. Evening gown, cocktail dress, or elegant pant suit for women Tuxedo, dark suit or dinner jacket and slacks for men http://www.princess.com/learn/faq_answer/pre_cruise/bring.jsp
Pam in CA Posted December 13, 2012 #8 Share Posted December 13, 2012 http://www.princess.com/learn/faq_answer/pre_cruise/bring.jspAs a general rule, checking the FAQs on the Princess website is a good idea. :)
maria1963 Posted December 13, 2012 Author #9 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Thanks all, that's much clearer though I would argue the polo shirt and button down collar. thats far too prescriptive but i get fhe picture. done the faq's but thanks anyway. Pam in CA Posted December 14, 2012 #11 Share Posted December 14, 2012 All ships now accept T shirts on casual evenings in the dining rooms. You've been able to get away with a t-shirt at dinner on Smart Casual evenings for years. That's nothing new. However, almost no one wears a t-shirt but if you do, you won't be asked to go back and change.

Most guys wear a dress shirt but my DH has been wearing one for years now & they've never said a word.
maria1963 Posted January 21, 2013 Author #13 Share Posted January 21, 2013 Just back and took far too many clothes! Lesson learned there. Interesting interpretations from different nationalities around what's dressy and what isn't. It's also very different by generation. We saw some sights that's for sure. Formal nights are easy though as its very clearly laid out and we loved them! Saw some lovely ladies in some fab gowns! Also saw an elderly chap in rasta wig not very formal that! NB tropical batik style shirts look great on the locals but don't travel well.
