Do you still smell the "partiers"?

If someone is being discrete enough to smoke thier stash in their own cabin and the smell happens to seep out into the hallway, I would just walk by and MYOB. If I saw someone taking a toke up by the funnel or where-ever, I would walk by, say nothing, and MYOB. It's not my job as passenger to police fellow passeners if they choose to partake.

In addition, if a child can tell the difference between a person smoking a doobie and a person smoking a cigarette - or- knows what "that smell " is than chances are that they already know what it is anyway. Making a big deal out of it is what's going to bring it to a kids attention.

Walk by, say nothing and carry on....... :)

Besides, the 20 room service trays sitting out in the hall might be a good indicator to the crew anyways........ and, I'm sure if tipped well, they will turn a blind-eye to it too.

JMO...

Didn't smell it on my Sept. cruise. But have smelled it 5 or so times out of 29 cruises. I talk to one young man who said they caught hom on the ship and fined him 500 cash. That was in 06,he may have been full of stuff. Don't know. I would think you would be put off at the next port.

Smelled it on a Princess Cruise on the balcony. To me same as cigarette smoke. I don't care for the smell but doesn't bother me what other people do. If I saw someone smoking it I would just walk by. None of my business. Yup to each his own.....

I have smelled it on almost every cruise I have been on (28). Most recently on the Conquest in November. Usually on the balcony as the ship sets sail from port. I can tell you form personal experience that the room stewards turn a blind eye to it, even when it is in plain sight. I can also tell you it is very easy to get on board dogs and all included. A dog can only sniff for one thing at a time and I think they are sniffing for explosives, which is a much greater danger than a few joints, which harm no one.

Thank you all. On the last few cruises we took - admittedly involving Jamaica - the smell was intolerable. Now - we were on the Riviera Deck - but getting off the elevators was like walking into a fog of "that smell". Truly sickening. Glad to know it may have changed in the last few years.:D

You recognized the smell???:p:D:eek:

I am allergic to pot smoke.

How do you find out that you are allergic to pot smoke?

I think I may have smelled some on our last cruise, but faint. If someone was smoking it in their room, wouldn't that be against the smoking policy and get fined?

FYI-Costco does surveys in their member magazines on various topics. One month they asked if pot should be legalized- 96% answered YES! That gives a good indication of how most of America feels about this topic.

I agree. Alcohol is the most destructive drug there is. It destroys more lives and families than all the other drugs combined. It also causes huge societal harm. But it is very legal. Maybe because politicians enjoy it so much. Look at all the pols who get arrested for DUI. And the Gov't makes huge amounts of $$$ from taxing it.

Funny story....On one of our first cruises, we met a couple from South Carolina and as we were talking to them. My wife mentioned she was starting to get a headache. The woman said "Oh honey..I have some goodys powder up in the cabin, come with me". My wife politely refused and said she had some Tylenol in her purse. She later turned to me and said..."did you here her offer me drugs!?" I had to laugh...she had never heard of Goody's Headache Powder!:D:D

The only time I smelled weed over our 9 cruises was one time we were on staying on the Veranda deck of the Inspiration. It was from an inside cabin across the hallway from us. We only smelled it in the hallway, not in our cabin.

Either way, it made no difference to us. Those folks partied their way and we had a good time our way.

Funny! Headache powders were unheard of where we grew up so I understand the ladies concern.

We came across headache powders at a C-store near Atlanta airport in 1990. My wife was not going to board our flight with a splitting headache, so we stopped at the little store on the way to the airport. Powders were the only headache medecine sold there. She tried it and it was like a wonder cure! We've been faithful customers ever since!

Since this has almost totally gone off topic, I thought I would add what we encountered a few weeks ago in Belize. My son (19) and I were looking in the shops before going back to the ship, and one of the men working in the shop told my son that he had some of the "special white powder" if he was interested:eek:

NOT cool!!! My son was shocked and I think it scared him a little bit.

Very interesting! This must be why it passed in CO & WA. Why not legalize it, tax the hell out of it, and maybe stop some of the organized crime that goes along with it.

I have worked in the law enforcement/justice system my entire adult life and I have to say that it would save A LOT of money and time just in the enforcement. Our states/feds are already set up to regulate just like alcohol.

I have an older brother... lol. (Seriously, it was one of his friends that was smoking outside of the apartment my brother lived in and I was going to come outside, but when I opened the door the smoke hit my face and I could not breath and my eyes itched and burned, even started to swell up. It took all of one minute for me to find out.)I actually had to have one of my team members move away from my desk because he had smoked in a car during his break (boss and I caught him, but he was not fired).

I should add, that I would only report it if it was affecting me, not if I could make sure I was not going to have a reaction. If people want to smoke anything, that is their business not mine. Everyone is entitled to a good time as long as they are not harming others...

On Fascination, our neighbors started out on the balcony before sail away. We didn't see much of them that week, but we knew they were there. Our hallway was aft, right under the staff meeting rooms, so there was a lot of ships staff up and down the stairs and in the hall all week. Security seemed to take a special interest in them and gave them a canine escort off the ship when we got back to Jax right to a sherrifs car. I was really surprised they took it that far.

I have smelled it on many occasion. I've had balcony neighbors that were smoking, no question...no big deal. I've also walked by cabins that the smell was into the hall. Its as easy to get as sand on many islands. I've never seen a customs dog when reboarding in port, so I'm not sure getting it back on the ship would be a problem. Burn it before getting back to the US or leave it behind.

So yes it does still happen and chances are it will continue to happen. Probably even harder drugs being done that you can't smell.

Going with the slightly OT nature of a few posts....

Reminds me of our last cruise - we'd been hanging out with a group of folks we met on board and on the last night we all had different dinner plans, so agreed to meet in our cabin for cocktails and then all go dancing. One guy realized he still had his wallet/phone with him (no clue why) so he tossed it in our safe and off we all went.

I came back a bit earlier than everyone else and decided to text home to make sure our ride was going to show up - opened the safe to get out my phone and OMG!!!!! Yep, he apparently left his "port obtained stash" in his wallet ~ the entire room was very aromatic within seconds.

He still hasn't lived that one down (especially as he later forgot he left ALL his stuff in our room!).

Carnival has a zero tolerance policy and I'm pretty certain you'd be put off at the next port or handed over to the authorities when stateside.

Do not purchase drugs while on an island or other foreign port... you DO NOT want to be locked up in a foreign jail.

Ever see Locked Up Abroad? <shivers>

I've read that sometimes the police hang out in the cruise zone hoping to spy an illegal transaction and then they will arrest the cruise passenger on the ship.

I do know they have drug dogs sniff the luggage as well. I've read passenger reports of drug sniffing dogs being walked slowly past passenger cabins while on the cruise.

Word of warning.

On our last cruise on the Splendor, when in port, I saw the Mexican drug dog and handler walking around, I was wondering if he was one of the "corrupt" Mexican police, and if he would sell me his dog, it was so cute.

I hate to ask such a question, and figure I will get flamed (hopefully small flames...lol) but here goes. On our last several cruises with Carnival - admittedly a few years ago - we often smelled, ummmm, certain "herbal" substances being smoked. Frequently the smell was strong enough to make us joke that the fumes alone would get us high...

Is this still the situation on board? Is this just on certain cruises? Help, please. Just curious.

Yes, I have smelled this coming from certain cabins on a few recent cruises.

The even we sailed from Ocho Rios, our neighbors in the cabin above us were partying are hard on the balcony yelling how it was the best they had ever smoked. Carnival says they have a zero tolerance, but I saw no attempt to screen for it when coming back on board.

I really don't care. I'm former LEO, but I also voted for legalization in our state. (Not a user. I was after the rum.)

I happen to love the smell - brought back memories of the 70s. I was one of those wild and crazy people back then and survived - "if you remember the 70s then you did not have a good time" (ha ha). I can say that it is on almost every ship you sail - not just Carnival but I just seemed to notice it more there - mainly because we travel Carnival the most. At least they TRY to keep it private by doing it in their own cabins (I know - they do it on the ship elsewhere but as secluded as they can be). It happens and won't change so just explain to the kids what it is and why people do it and hopefully you have raised your kids to be open about things and will continue to talk to you about it. My kids know my past and don't judge me for it and at 60 years old we have a total open dialogue

I too love the 70's and the aroma of the stuff does bring a smile to my face.

I can't believe it when I read about all the weed that is smoked on the ships and how families are thrown off and the parent or 2 or older kid is arrested in a foreign port. No consideration for their families at all!
