brownie9 Posted January 16, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2013 Any idea about what to do in Portofino Italy. Can we just get off the ship and walk to see some things or will we need a tour? Near by restaurants, shopping, site seeing we can walk or taxi to? Any help will be appreciated. Thank-you. Diane

Diane I really suggest that you Google Portofino, read through some pages on this board as there is quite abit of info, and look the area up in a guide book. You can just walk around or take the ferry or bus to Santa Margarita as this is a small town, but do read some pages here to get more ideas. KirkNC Posted January 16, 2013 #3 Share Posted January 16, 2013 Porfofino is very small but very pretty. You can climb up to Castle Brown and the church (St Andrews maybe?) and get great views.
Deebs2 Posted January 17, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 17, 2013 We were there on our own last summer. Its a cute little town, but not a lot to see. Just wandering on your own will keep you occupied
hylasgirl Posted January 17, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 17, 2013 This was a nice post to read... We are going to take a day trip and drive to Portofino from Nice. It looks like a small enough town for a day trip.
salabc Posted January 17, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 17, 2013 it much depend on the season assume it will be sometime during summer so a good excursion would be to take one of local boat going to San Fruttuoso which is a very small village ( abt 20 person permantly living there) with an very old ( middle age Abbey) a 2 small beaches the village can only be reache by sea or hiking the mountain you can check the timetable at http://www.traghettiportofino.it ( there is an english version) alternative either by boat or bus you can go to Santa Margherita and Rapallo ( the 2 bigger village next to portofino) as far as restaurant in Portofino are concerned I would personally suggest you a very small one called " da Mario" or if you look for something more trendy and upscale probably the best one would be "Puny"
TERRIER1 Posted January 18, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 18, 2013 We took the bus to Santa Marguirita Liguria and then walked backed to Portofino. It was a lovely walk with beautiful views. The weather was good the day we were there.
rollerball53 Posted January 18, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 18, 2013 Portofino is a small town so after a nice walk around and a capuccino in a sea bar, I would take a taxi to go to Santa Margherita ligure, about 20 mnts far where you have more walking and restaurant opportunities.:)

LondonTowner Posted January 18, 2013 #10 Share Posted January 18, 2013 A couple of years ago we stayed in Rapallo as a base and drove around the whole, beautiful area. We also took the ferry a few times to Santa Margarita and Portofino. Portofino is pretty, but very commercialised. You could maybe go to the famous Hotel Splendido, where many celebrities stay and/or get married. The bars and restaurants in Portofino are fairly expensive. The weather was good the day we were there. We did the same, but we walked both ways. I agree, the views are beautiful. I would love to go back someday. nparmelee Posted January 20, 2013 #14 Share Posted January 20, 2013 We took the little bus from Portofino over to Santa Margarita Ligure and explored over there a bit, there was a market that day which was fun and then we walked back to Portofino, had a nice lunch and wandered there. Rmurray847 is confusing Portofino with Positano I think, Nice to Positano would not be an easy or doable day trip. Nice to Portofino is doable, but that's a lot of road time, for such a little town. Much of the road does go inland a bit, but it can be a nice area to drive, parking can be tough so have patience.

maryann ns Posted January 26, 2013 #16 Share Posted January 26, 2013 Portofino is much closer to Nice than Naples: https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Portofino,+Province+of+Genoa,+Italy&daddr=Nice,+France&hl=en&sll=43.696036,7.265592&sspn=0.251701,0.676346&geocode=FTQDpAIdvIeMACkFTG_8xp_UEjHbAQ_wtarZ7w%3BFaS_mgIdON1uACkxLYVqENDNEjFwmpf9pRkIBA&oq=portofini&mra=ls&t=m&z=9 We easily drove from Nice to Vernazza which is further and were there in the early afternoon.
