Little French Key Questions

Planning LFK in May and have some questions :) TIA!

1) Did anybody have issues with the transportation? We chose to have them pick us up and drop us back off and wanted to make sure that it was worth it and we wouldn't be sitting at the dock for a significant amount of time waiting while they take others as well!

2) Does anybody have an up to date prices on food and drinks? I know that our lunch and two drinks are included, but it's vacation, we might need more ;)

3) Were there plenty of chairs, space, etc? Or did anybody feel too crowded?

We spent time at Little French Key in December 2012.

1. We used LFK arranged transportation and had no problem. There were 3-4 couples from our ship which collected up outside of the gated shop area. The taxi was pre-arranged by LFK. No lengthy wait.

3. The day we were there it was certainly not crowded. Guests included our small group from NCL, some other people already at Frenchy's waiting for the barge (maybe 20), daytrippers possibly, and a group from an AIDA ship (maybe another 20-30).

We very much enjoyed our time there. Hubby is looking for another cruise which specifically stops in Roatan so he can enjoy LFK again. I think it has a very nice setup.

Do you have any info on Little French Key? Their website doesn't say a whole lot and I'm interested....

There have been numerous posts about Little French Key and its developments since it opened which you will be able to read (if the search engine is working today) if you put Little French Key in the search engine for the Roatan board. The most comprehensive thread is this one in case the search is not working

It's a little hard to read above, but we chose package III. It includes lunch and two drinks, plus the entire use of the island, including the area with the monkeys and also transportation :) I know that it seems a little steep, but I haven't read many reviews on people complaining of the price, just on how gorgeous the place is and what a wonderful time they had!

Some advice from one Baton Rougen to another, bring all of your paperwork! Chances are there will be yet another price change when you visit, and you will have to show a few people what your rate is. That was how it was for us. Also note that they add a %15 "alcohol tax" to your bar tab. Be off the ship as early as possible, our driver Dave had already left and we were off early. Got to the Key and no one there? Yes beautiful place, but the snorkeling part of the package is a waste. They take you just off of the beach (you can wade out) Better off just grabbing some gear and exploring on your own. I'd be happy to answer any specific questions.

Great to know! I had realized that their packages have changed just from the last few months but reading other threads. Did you enjoy your experience, or did you think it wasn't worth it?

How was the beach area / swimming? And also from the ship, about how long is the walk to meet Dave? I'm booked here for April and seeking a lounge chair, ocean swimming,a good lunch and not massive amounts of people.

We booked when the only rate was $65, that was honored in November. We were on NCL so the walk to the meeting of Dave was 60 seconds. Too bad Dave had abruptly left and we had to look for someone else. I can see where Carnival's Mahogany Bay would be a bit of a walk up a hill to the tour vehicles. Sounds crazy, but I think everyone on the key that day all had different rates. We were asked for our printed confirmation 3 times that day. We do feel like we got our $$ worth. The beauty of the water alone was worth it. Food very good, and plentiful. The "zoo" is nice to see, but that takes just a couple of minutes. We had float chairs, and loungers, and drink service. Don't know why they don't mention the 15% alcohol tax anywhere, oh well. There were about 20 people total the day we went. The people that paid extra for a snorkeling package were close enough to yell at, and (that day) most were cut by the coral after getting out of the boat. The "beach" area was fine for us since we mostly stayed in the water. Don't think that you can really lay on the sand strip. I would think that they have worked out some of kinks we encountered by now, mostly communication.

Beautiful place no doubt, incredible water. You won't want to get out. We will be in Roatan in July, and agree that the going rate now is too high, especially when buying your own drinks. We will be looking elsewhere. IMHO Little French Key should be all inclusive, and simplify the packages. Also, try to bring cash denominations that will allow you to pay exact, no change on the key turned into a less than relaxing end to a vacation day. You certainly don't want to use a CC. 15% or 18% added.

Are the float chairs like the floatie rafts in the water? It's annoying that they fluctuate price so much, but it's our honeymoon that we never got to take so we are splurging :)

When you say better off just grabbing some gear, do you mean from LFK or to bring your own? Thanks

Whether or not the snorkeling is 'good' or 'bad', 'worth it or not' may be a factor of weather & wind conditions. When we did our snorkel tour @ LFK in August, we were taken by boat out & around the adjoining island, it took several minutes, definitely too far to swim. If the reef area is too choppy, then snorkeling right around the island in the lagoon area would be very different...we brought our own gear even tho we had the 'snorkel' package (due to our own preference).

My little group of 3 did snorkel the lagoon also, saw a few fish too. It's sandy &/or grassy in that area, not reef...

I will post a couple of comparison photos!:)

Lagoon area a few feet off shore of LFK

Reef area around the other side of 'Big French Key?'...I guess that's what it would be called, it's the land area seen in most pictures adjacent to LFK.

Hope this helps!

I am curious as to where the 'floating pier ' is...Is it new, I don't remember anything like that in August...well, that has been a while, & I know their intentions are to keep improving the area! Good to know our $$$ is being put to good use!

Thought I would make ya hungry w/ food porn!!
