CHOPPERTESTER Posted January 28, 2013 #51 Share Posted January 28, 2013 What would you consider routine maintainance? How does one know what's going to break down before it happens? All ships get beaten to death never shutting down 24/7. Your car would break down too. I wonder if these ships were made at one particular shipyard using one brand of parts. The technology exists for the cruise lines to predict when their propulsion will fail, hence slowing down until they can plan and get the repair parts. For more info on the technology check out http://www.gastops.com/marine_propulsion_pods.php

Jeano222 Posted January 28, 2013 #53 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Daughter just called, carnival just sent email/text that they would be giving an additional 15.00 as a credit for lunch, I'm assuming it would be 15.00 per person? . I wonder when they will know which port is being cancelled?

Dabaras Posted January 28, 2013 #55 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Predictive maintenance is the latest thing that companies that do maintenance, whether it is on cars or boats or manufacturing equipment. But they don't account for everything. Predictive maintenance doesn't help you when a fishing net fouls your prop and tears up the seals.
sanmarcosman Posted January 28, 2013 #56 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Or, if the memos have to go out, revise them to delete the foolish "betcha" and add the following to the end: "We know how much you were looking forward to this vacation and sincerely apologize for this disruption to your cruise. We kindly ask you consider the following options: Sail with us and receive a: • One-day pro-rated refund of your cruise fare (refunded within the next 2 weeks) • $50 per person on board credit • Refund of the difference in government fees and taxes, if applicable • Gratuity adjustment to reflect the shortened voyage, if applicable • Refund for shore excursions purchased for cancelled ports, if any And if you believe there is any chance at all that you will become dissatisfied with this offer once onboard, we URGE you to consider canceling and rescheduling your sailing, so that those who wish to sail may enjoy a safe and peaceful voyage." [sad to even have to joke about such a thing]:( This is sound advice and I hope Carnival takes heed and follows through with your suggestion. It would save a lot of aggravation for all concerned. Re: "Betcha" I receive many cover letters attached to job resumes that close with "Have a Nice Day!!!" as I toss these in the round file I say to myself: "You betcha I will." ;)
truecruiser Posted January 28, 2013 #57 Share Posted January 28, 2013 This protest? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm0sIlNj4VE Sorry. I didn't even see this post until now and actually ended up posting the same link when i was searching for it. It might have been taken down by the person. It was before this incident and it was pretty bad. I wonder how many have cancelled are you booked on this sailing? you said you got the txt. Are you going or canceling? if going, how are things so far? This is sound advice and I hope Carnival takes heed and follows through with your suggestion. It would save a lot of aggravation for all concerned. huntm Posted January 28, 2013 #58 Share Posted January 28, 2013 The Triumph had propulsion issues back in Dec that affected our cruise. Apparently, it is an ongoing issue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
truecruiser Posted January 28, 2013 #59 Share Posted January 28, 2013 ...I was surprised, no - make that amazed, that they indicated that we had received permission to open the casino at 7 pm that night, WHILE DOCKED IN KEY WEST. Not sure how they pulled that off - or if they really asked anyone (you know, sometimes it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission)! Tom That is amazing. Wonder too how they pulled that one off.
jhale Posted January 28, 2013 #60 Share Posted January 28, 2013 I'm betting their overnight stay will be in Progresso, it is more of an industrial port and closer to Galveston. Bummer to miss Cozumel, but I hope they get her all fixed up before Saturday.
Grits53 Posted January 28, 2013 #61 Share Posted January 28, 2013 She's docking now.Best of luck to my friends about to board. Hope y'all have a great time!!! Uh, no. She is still in the spot where they turn around to back in. Has been there for quite some time now. My daughter is on the ship, and I just got off the phone with her. She said they were also 2 hours late arriving at Cozumel Saturday. The captain blamed the undertow. Maybe he worked the engines too hard that day? At any rate, I feel confident that Carnival would not neglect maintenance on any ship. I'm sure this little incident will be quite costly for them. Bummer to miss Cozumel, but I hope they get her all fixed up before Saturday. I'm willing to bet that Carnival has already arranged to port in Progreso for the repairs and has everything lined up. I'm sure that they are intentionally not announcing this because they know that more passengers will cancel if they find out in advance that Progreso will be the only stop. Smart business decision - but still shady if you ask me! Ashley :-)

My mom was on the Ecstasy for a 5-nighter when they had similar issues and there was a protest in the atrium. Everyone was chanting "he** no Progresso," ended up they never docked at all due to high winds and had to be towed up the channel to dock in Galveston upon their return. Huge mess. rbsummers Posted January 28, 2013 #68 Share Posted January 28, 2013 We got the texts and e-mail last night. My wife would actually rather have stayed the 2 days in Progreso, but not telling us until after we sail didn't work for us. Called and talked to them last night - the agent moved us to the next cruise on the Triumph on 02/02, so we're hoping they will get their problem fixed this week. And next week's cruise was actually $50/person cheaper, so we got the same discount offered this week, and hopefully will still get to see both ports! When I called the Port this morning to change my parking, they said they were VERY BUSY with cancellations today. For those who went, please keep us posted on the trip! Tonka's Skipper Posted January 29, 2013 #70 Share Posted January 29, 2013 That had nothing to do with maintenance whatsoever. Everything to do with a stupid, dumb decision by the captain trying to impress friends on shore. Just trying to set the record straight. Actually that is not totally correct..the Concordia had a history of electrical/blackout problems and had some the day before the sinking. Of course that is more a cronic design issue then a maintiance issue. They are still investigating if there was any electrical issues before she bounced off that rock. jhale Posted January 29, 2013 #74 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Just checked again, she's still here. The lights on the front (the blue ones) were on, but are now off, I think they turn them off for navigational purposes so maybe they're getting ready to fire it up. Well hopefully, for those on board!
