using international calling card in port

My son and DIL just bought an international calling card locally for $60 for unlimited talk/text for a month so they can be in contact with "other" grandparents and their 3 year old. I don't have any experience with these type of cards but just did a search and learned that some cards don't work in all ports. I got the impression from the poster that the card was bought in port, so maybe not as reputable?

Does anyone have any experience with these cards - probably purchased at Wal-Mart? Would hate to see them spend $60 on a card in hopes of calling home, and not be able to. TIA

When yuou say 'purchased locally', do you mean they purchased it at home to use abroad? Or did they purchase it locally in a port...Cards purchased at home are usually only for calls from the US to foreign places. If they are out of the country on a cruise, the best place to ask is the crew, as they buy/use them all the time. EM
