Egg Crates. One side only?

We were just wondering if the egg crates could be used on one side of the bed only. My husband need a firmer mattress and I need something softer. Health problems. If they push 2 twin beds together to make a queen, couldn't they just put an egg crate or two to make one side softer? Should I wait till I see our room steward to ask? Thanks.

Yes they usually have different size cut pieces.

We do this every cruise. Not a problem at all (and keeps my husband on his side of the bed).
