Update on the Carnival Triumph:

Details on Initial Incident/Status of Tugboats

Yesterday morning, February 10, the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced a fire in the aft engine room while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was successfully extinguished. There were no ...casualties or injuries to guests or crew.

The vessel is currently without propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico and awaiting the arrival of two tugboats which will tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port to the ship’s current location. The ship is expected to arrive in Progreso late Wednesday and guests will be flown from Mexico back to the U.S. on chartered aircraft which the company is currently working to arrange.

Currently, a team consisting of additional technical crew and guest service personnel is en route to the vessel and is expected to arrive via boat later today. All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter is presently on site next to the Carnival Triumph and in communication with the ship.

Update on Shipboard Services

The ship has maintained emergency generator power since the fire occurred and the technical team on board has been successful in gradually restoring auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions. Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service. Guests have been supplied with food and refreshments throughout yesterday and this morning and the ship has supplies on board to last until the vessel returns to port.

Yesterday afternoon, the Carnival Elation rendezvoused with the Carnival Triumph and supplied dinners for the guests on Carnival Triumph, along with additional provisions. Early this afternoon, the Carnival Legend will also be on site to do the same.

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew on board.

We continue to update the designated emergency contacts for all guests presently on board Carnival Triumph. Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 888.290.5095 or 305.406.5534.

Upcoming Voyages and Compensation

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

The next two voyages of Carnival Triumph, scheduled to depart Monday, February 11 and Saturday, February 16 are being cancelled. Guests scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses and a 25 percent discount on a future three to five-day cruise. Carnival is in contact with impacted guests to advise them of the situation.

The current Carnival Triumph voyage departed Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, February 7 and was scheduled to return on Monday, Feb. 11.

Does Carnival have to look at its operations and make major changes?

Welcome to todays world of cruising. All the cruise lines have cut back in the name of profit.. Being the largest cruise line company just means that there are more people taking pot shots at you...

525 days at sea

46 cruises

12 cruise lines

T/P, T/A, Hawaii, Central & South America, New Zealand & South Pacific, Rio/ Amazon, Alaska

Don't understand your comment about "pot shots". Triumph? Splendor? Concordia? - All factual incidents and all Carnival brand ships. Not saying there is an issue with Carnival but as a consumer I would certainly be curious about whether or not they need to take a look at things. Any good corporation would with those kind of incidents. And I would say this if it was happening with RCI or any other cruise line for that matter.

The Super Bowl power outage was not the result of an extraordinary event beyond the control of any of the parties (like a war, crime, riot, act of God, etc.) It was not force majeure. As one of the many parties involved in the incident the Superdome management certainly COULD be sued; whether they would lose would, of course, be up to the finder-of-fact.

It would have fallen under force majeure between the NFL and the Superdome, as it was not under the control of either of those two parties. The power company on the other hand...

I would never take a cruise without a valid passport. If you are travelling to foreign areas, why would you not have a passport. We make copies of all of our ID and credit cards and keep it at home and with us!

I always have my passport card with me on a cruise and use that. I do also bring the regular passport just in case of emergency and keep it locked up in the room safe along with my credit cards and DL. I usually only take passport card, sign and sail card and one credit card with me into ports. It just makes things so much easier.

You'll be OK.

They'll pay for your van, any other expenses you've incurred, and to get you back home, refund your cruise fare, plus 25% off your next cruise.

Make sure you keep receipts.

Since they will all be going back to Houston/Galveston, it will be cheaper for Carnival to just arrange for a group of charter jets direct from Mexico to Galveston. It would take a week to arrange that on regular commercial. So, I assume there will be charter jets.

There will be, but I can guarantee that there won't be 13 jets sitting on the tarmac waiting to repatriate people. They will probably charter two and run them twice a day for three days.

I don't want to sound rude here, I know a lot of people love Carnival - but I have to say when you are paying so little for accomodations with food included - what do you expect?

It costs money to run that ship (and pay for new ones to be built), pay crew, pay entertainers, do maintainence!!! Look at what other cruise lines charge for the same cabin. Yes, more expensive - but food and service are better. You get what you pay for.

I beg to differ. We sailed on the Caribbean Princess last year on a B2B. Yes we paid more and the food and service was terrible. The rooms were smaller too. We decided to try Princess since our first Carnival cruise was just so so, Holland America was wonderful but the age of the passengers was older than what we expected. We heard great things about Princess and yet platinum members were in agreement that it was under par. In Jan. we were on the Liberty, the service was wonderful, the rooms were great and the food was good too. So, I guess it's hit and miss, you don't always get what you paid for. Every cruise is different.

You seem to be missing the point. Lost wages will not be reimbursed, and that is a factor that keeps many from being able to just book another trip. They have also said that transportation home will be covered for the current cruise, nothing has been mentioned about a free ride for the free "make up" cruise. That again adds cost, which for some is very expensive. Not everyone lives an hour from a cruise port.

By the way, not everyone drives to the port, some ply and have to pay for parking at the airport.

I didn't miss the point. If a future cruise will involve all those expenses, how did they get the money in the first place (this is being returned) So they can keep the reimbursed money, voila, next trip paid for. As for lost wages, we don't know that. Most have paid vacation, others retired. If a few days lost wages makes makes or breaks things for a lifetime, they shouldn't be be spending that money in the first place.

According to the latest update here on Cruise Critic:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=5192

Looks like the passengers have been allowed back to their cabins now .. also limited hot food, elevators .. Aft sewage (toilets) still non functional ..

Whatever the case - sounds like the conditions are getting a bit better. I'm sad because we're scheduled to sail on Triumph on the 25th .. (two weeks) .. and strongly suspect that won't be happening. Have spent the morning looking at vacation options ... or trying to decide if hubby should just cancel his vacation time and rebook for the fall .. decisions .. decisions.. The (minor) frustration is that I can't do anything 'til I officially know it's a "no go" .. (well I could .. but that would be silly..) Would much prefer the cruise..

I would call that update very positive. It sounds like conditions are slowly but surely improving, and they are working hard to make the guests as comfortable as possible. The mention of cabin toilets leads me to believe (hope) that all the passengers are no longer confined to only public areas of the ship.

This still doesn't cover loss of wages to take another cruise. Some people don't get vacation pay. I'm not sure how much clearer I could be about that. The equitable thing to do would be to offer the "free" cruise OR cash equivalent.

If you're brother can't manage his money to save for a cruise that's his problem. The couple going with me on my cruise in April are going without vacation. You are just getting the fact these people getting reimbursed for this cruise plus travel. Take that money and put it aside to pay for their next cruise expenses. In addition, their next cruise is paid for. What more do you want ?

You still aren't getting it. Some people can afford a vacation every five years or so, not every year or even every other year. Just because someone can't "afford" something, it doesn't mean that they are broke. It means that they are cautious with their money and won't spend money outside their budget if it means taking away from things like retirement savings.

There is no "lifetime" but rather a limited amount of time that this "free cruise" will be available for, and there will be some who will not be able to take the time or have the money to take advantage of the offer.

They can do it all in two days with three planes and three round trips a day assuming they start with fresh crews. If they can get additional crews for those planes (tricky on short notice), it could be done in a 24 hour period. If they use two, it will take three days. Might be cheaper for Carnival in the long run just to charter three planes if they can get them.

Im glad to hear this!. Things dont seem near as dire as everyone has been making it out to be. Yes, im sure its not ideal circumstances but sounds like Carnival is trying its best to make the situation more tolerable. The worst of it will be getting everyone home!

As one of the original posters on this thread, I thought it was going to be a place where people with family members on board would be able to update each other. Wow, I was completely wrong.

This thread is so out of control it's unbelievable. The fact that some people believe that people who have received texts from family members aboard are lying is insane! Why, would we lie? We have no reason, we were just trying to keep each other updated.

I've read stuff about the auto industry, the Titanic, passports, speculation, compensation, medications, drinking kool-aid, camping, job security, discounts, tents, the blizzard in the north, post saying they wish they were on the ship because then they would just get another free cruise, and many more totally unrelated remarks! It's basically become a thread for just trash talking each other!

I mean for heaven's sake there was even a CNN reporter on the thread spying at one time who contacted me and wanted to do a live interview with Solidad O'brien this morning, which I refused!

I guess the point of this is to say that this thread is absolutely useless and to be honest has disgusted me! If this thread is a good sample of the kind of people who are on Cruise Critics, then I really have no reason to ever come back here!

P.S...Go ahead, let the flaming begin! It's what you guys do right?

On HAL it depends on the ship. The two newer ships will give you a younger crowd. We are young and we sail HAL.

I just wanted to add something about the remark that all the passengers are unharmed. We don't know that with 100% certainty. I suffer from migraines brought on by light and heat. With AC and medication it's manageable.

Without AC for 3 days, floating in the middle of the ocean, it would not be manageable. Add in stress of the ordeal, trying to get home, some people might be suffering.

If your family is aboard I pray that they are okay and hope for a quick return to you.

Really?

A person saves their money and takes a vacation every five years.

That vacation is ruined through no fault of their own.

They are told they can take a "make up" vacation but it must happen within a set period of time, one, perhaps two years.

They can't afford to take another "unpaid" vacation in that time frame.

Get it?

I think most of can agree we can this is not the way to spend a vacation. However while some folks think of the lighter side is camping, the real half glass full is no one lost their life.

With out power, the crew can't cook, ice machines can't make ice for drinks, and don't forget the ship makes its own drinking water and that requires power too. The potty situation is a disaster of its own, even when a ship is working normal, the public restroom can be full and get dirty. With everyone on ship in one location, I can't even image how bad it is.

Those of us, who have done a 'hurricane' extended cruise know just how grumpy people get with even a few food items missing. The one I was on, were were out and extra 3 days. By the end of day two there were no more chips, ranch dressing and a few other little items and people were already getting upset.

Not being able to go to the cabin does suck, however even if you could, unless you had a balcony room you couldn't stay in there for long. I was on a NCL ship that lost air con to mid ship and didn't tell anyone until we boarded. One third of the guests didn't have air for 6 days! People with a balcony would leave their balcony and hall doors open. However people with inside cabins were having to sleep on deck, and they were NOT happy campers to say the least! Lost count how many required medical evac for heat problems. BTW all that was offered for having to camp on deck was a $25 on board credit, and you had to wait in line to get it.

Bottom line is we have to remember, things can go wrong. However if you think about how many ships are out there at any given time. These major disasters don't happen that often, and that's why it's big news when it does happen.

As I noted earlier, not the issue. From where they are docking a bonded bus into the US is not a realistic option. Which means they will have to fly from Mexico into the US. For that, according to WHTI, a passport is a requirement.

That requirement can (and will) allowing them to use alternate clearance procedures.

If they can get CBP units to the originating airport, this can be done pre-boarding if the airport has the necessary access control, otherwise it will have to be done on arrival.

Given that the CBP has advance knowledge, they will set up stations accordingly at immigration (they will see areas for US Citizens w/Passports, US Citizens/Alternate Screening, and Foreign Visitors (who will have to have passports and needed them to get into the country). I'm trying to find out what the protocol is for US Residents-Non Citizen. No idea how that works.

Those with passports will be cleared normally. Those without that have alternate acceptable ID will also be cleared fairly quickly (checked against a couple of lists, basically). Those without sufficient ID may have issues and will be dealt with on a case by case process (the same one used for lost passports, for example).

They will handle those without passports just as they handle them on Vancouver and Ensenada sailings. They will be on bonded busses and take the directly to the airport. Not having a passport is not going to be a problem.
