Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

For those of you who have family on board. I just received a call from Carnival

They are not going to Progresso! They are being towed to Mobile Alabama!!

The boat has drifted so far North it is the same distance so they chose Mobile!

Oh no! Now those traveling without the all-important passport are really, really screwed. Have pity on their souls! If they need a "Suthrun" interpreter, I volunteer. I graduated from West Laurens HS in Dublin, GA.

One note to those booking travel on the Triumph when she returns to service - avoid the ice buckets.

That was sage advice proffered by someone on the Splendor fire thread years ago.....

I hope they are going to Mobile, as it will make the situation a lot better for many people on the ship I think.

I don't want to speculate on anything, I just feel bad for everyone on the ship and their families not on the ship. Even if they are making the best of it and are going to have a great story to tell, it still is sucky,

Hopefully this is accurate info from them (not saying you aren't being accurate with what you've been told) as it would alleviate the passport issue--although I think that even if it were a little further that it would still make more sense to not have to pay foreign taxes, charter fees, etc.

Of all the lack of empathy expressed on this thread, I think the accusations of outright fabrication are the toughest to deal with.

If you read upthread you'll see that folks were able to text off the cell towers of the adjacent ships.

Have been on a ship during troubled times. No cell service unless connecting to Cell at Sea if you could. I do have symphony for these people. These are the worst conditions and I would never want to be there.

Military flights are exempt from the WHTI requirements.

Per the navy website:

US Military.

a. Military personnel on official business do not require passports but do require military ID cards and travel orders.

That's not entirely true. I went to Honduras and, even though I have a passport, I had to get a military passport. Civilian passport is blue, military is maroon

Just joined this site, after reading it extensively trying to find info about the situation on this ship. My wife is aboard for her very first cruise. She and her best friend have a cabin just forward of the centerline of the ship.

She has reported to me through texts, and 2 phone calls she managed to get out while the other ships were moving supplies aboard. She tells me she has not heard of or seen any functioning restrooms/etc. She said she not not seen anyone fighting for food, but she had seen that people waiting in very long lines were pileing up the food and (hoarding) taking it to their cabins as if there would be no more. She said the crew was assuring all that there was plenty of food, but many pax were ignoring this advice. At 16:29 CST she said that 1 of the tug boats was in site. And they they had been advised that they may not be into port until friday.

Has it been confirmed that they are now underway via the tugs?

Carnival is being flamed because they deserve to be flamed. Their record of mishaps grows every year.

The Carnival cheerleaders on this forum are amazing.... and not in a good way!

These were not military aircraft - these were actual chartered 747's and MD-80's. My last trip was to Europe to meet a submarine coming back to the US after "testing" some special equipment we installed in the shipyard.

These planes had air service corporate insignia, and were US flagged. Only once did I get to fly in the backward-seat loaded C-135, and that was not a happy flight. 12 hours from Hawaii to "The Footprint of Freedom" (Diego Garcia).

But, it looks like a moot point now. I know one of my coworkers and his wife that are on board will be thrilled to see land, no matter where they end up. Doesn't Mobile have some kickin' casinos? If that's the case, I know where he'll be.

I was just going on what I experienced in the service. I never had a passport until 2010, and I flew chartered all over the world. Many of them were through Air Mobility Command (used to be call MAC), but they were treated as charters nonetheless. Could be that they have tightened things up a bit since then. We embarked at commercial jetports (stateside) and when we landed we were all herded into a chartered bus and taken to base.

Active duty military on orders flying aircraft chartered by the military are exempt from passport requirements.

Please see a statement from our CEO, Gerry Cahill

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH

STATEMENT FROM GERRY CAHILL, PRESIDENT & CEO, CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES

February 12, 2013, 8:30pm ET

The Carnival Triumph, while on a four-day cruise that departed Galveston last Thursday, experienced an engine room fire on Sunday morning and has been without propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico since that time. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was successfully extinguished. Fortunately, there were no injuries to guests or crew members.

Earlier this evening, the first of two tugboats arrived and is tied up to the ship with the second expected in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We had originally planned to tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, the closest port to the ship’s location early Sunday. Since that time, the ship has drifted about 90 miles north due to strong currents. This now puts the ship nearly equidistant to Mobile, Alabama and given the strength of the currents, it is preferable to head north to Mobile, rather than attempt to tow against them. We now expect to arrive in Mobile sometime on Thursday, roughly the same time the ship would have arrived in Progreso given the distance the ship has traveled. From there, we will provide the necessary transportation to get our guests home. Mobile also provides simpler re-entry, particularly for the 900 guests onboard traveling without passports.

We have maintained constant contact with the ship’s officers. All of our guests are safe, and we’re doing everything we can to make them as comfortable as possible. The ship has maintained emergency generator power since the fire occurred and the technical team on board has been successful in gradually restoring auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions. Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund for the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience, discomfort, and frustration our guests are feeling. We know they expected a fantastic vacation, and clearly that is not what they received. Our shipboard and shoreside teams are working around the clock to care for our guests and get them home safely.

Thanks for posting this. Looks like Mobile is the plan for now, that should make getting back to Galveston simpler and easier.

Am I having eye problems? The first announcement said it drifted north, The one on this said it drifted south.

Posts can be edited within (I believe) 15 minutes of original posting. Likely the poster read their post and upon seeing the error corrected it. The thread is quite busy so it can also take time for updates to appear.
