Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

Port state control is world wide, and enforced by each countries Coast Guard

Small defects are noted and re-inspected in another port (country)

Major Defects will prevent a vessel from sailing the port it is at until fixed.

A Report is made at every Port State and put into a data base for other countries to look into once they see which vessels will be calling at their Ports.

It is done on all types of vessels, and then you have health inspections re sanitary conditions

The industry is very regulated already

Do you think the casino was open? Do you think that, without power, they would have run a power-intensive location like the casino? Ship on a stick?

 

All of thing things he mentioned dont need power and most could be done just about anywhere on the ship. They would have been running activities and prize giveaways. It helps stop boredom and keeps morale up.

I know it was closed, I did say for FUN, I don't recall any of the table games taking power, just cards and chips, again play for fun to pass the time.

 

Yes a ship on a stick, if you have ever been on a Carnival cruise you know what that is, and if you have not, well I am not going to tell you the secret of the ship of a stick.

Some of the passengers will occur additional expenses or lose of income. Their employer may not pay them for the extra time off of work, if some one parked their car at a paid parking lot, now they have incurred additional parking fees, or having a pet kenneled for extra days. $500 may not cover all of these expenses. This is such a very unfortunate event.

The USCG should ground the ccl fleet- prohibit them from leaving a U.S. port until each ship and its logs, are inspected.

Passenger safety should come first.

 

 

Oh gosh really???? Maybe they should gound all "foreign flagged" cruise ships including ships from your favorite cruise line! Ships need to be safe or they cant be insured & us cruisers cant board them! So i think NOT!

 

BTW have you seen the bureaucrats, nutty tax laws, & antiquated shipping policies of the USA??

There may be commercial aircraft that service oil platforms but I doubt many of their crews have experience supplying powerless ocean going vessels.

While the people have been stuck on the ship, and there was nothing to do,

 

Do you think they had any "fun" games in the Casino?

 

Black jack, Craps, other table games,

 

Just for fun, or maybe the entertainment staff having prizes, ship on a stick, funship freddy type of prizes?

 

Seams like it would have helped pass the time,

 

 

Sometimes I'm a guest lecturer or give classes on cruises and you have to have extra classes ready just in case, for situations like these (or even if a ship misses an anticipated port). On a 7 turned 11 days cruise, I 'worked' a few extra days and there were still activities going on, albeit sparingly.

 

I'm assuming on this trip there wasn't much room to move around, and safety considerations trumped that?

Why should she have to? Cruising Carnival is no super-dooper key to inner knowledge of what is going on in this crisis. Did your kids go to that school in Conn...if not maybe you shouldn't grieve for he loss of the families.

 

How can people be so shallow to think if you didn't attend the movie theatre where those people were slaightered every Sat., you could not emphathize with the horror those people felt.

 

This is the most juvenile, closed minded retort...NAH NAH, YOU DONT CRUISE US...so you have no connection to the human suffering on board?!

Agreed, but there is more. Since many of us C.C. posters cruise on Carnival Corporation lines it stands to reason that a changing corporate culture of the parent may significantly influence a subsidiary.

 

In this instance, Carnival Cruise Lines seems to be undergoing a proliferation of engine room fires, let us hope that is not a trend. Wise travelers should and do pay attention to stuff like this and express our questions and concerns accordingly. Carnival Corp. owns: AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruise, Cunard, Holland America, Ibero, P&O, P&O Australia, Princess, Seabourn as well as Carnival Cruise Lines.

It also might depend on staff availability for some things. I suspect that a lot of crew members were shifted from doing things like entertainment to helping with food transport and other higher priority guest services. So I am not sure how much crew would have been able to entertain. Plus, I'd rather win a hamburger than a ship on a stick!

I have been reading this thread for 2 days. My son is a musician on the Triumph. They have performed every day in the casino. I talked to him an hour ago and he had just finished a 2 hour set. He has been working all night some nights on "flashlight duty." He worked facilitating customs today. They really are trying to keep things as positive as possible.

Very good to hear. I figured they would have to take on extra duty. I'm glad they were still able to provide some diversions. I hope Carnival treats him as well as he and the rest of crew treated the passengers.

Perhaps you'd care to suggest the appropriate levels of compensation for the 60,000 - 70,000 passengers who would be out vacations each week, and the 20,000 or so crew who would be out wages as a result of this suggestion.

Press conference brought to an end as reporter asking about compensation for passengers' lost wages.

 

Deck and engine crews staying with the ship to help move it. Hotel staff going to hotels. Contract employees either going on vacation early (paid) or transferred to other ships.

 

No word from Gerry Cahill, although he is reportedly there.

I have been on many cruises and I can't tell you how many times they anchor out away from the dock/port and they tender ALL passengers into the dock. (This is world wide) Are you saying that this is unsafe? Are you saying that it is placing passengers at risk? My goodness then the maritime community better look into this practice at once and stop it immediately for safety sake.
