Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

There is a cruise contract in place on every cruise on EVERY cruise line. It always up to them to do just about anything to keep people safe without compensation in many phases. Carnival is not stupid. They want to take care of their current plus future customers as any company would. Call this chearleading but any cruise line would be doing the same thing in this matter in my opinion.

Yeh and that Tom Hanks guy in that castaway movie...Why didn't he realize Fedex gave him a free trip to a tropical paradise when he could have been toiling away in

Memphis.

You realize that was just a movie and not real life don't you.

Would say it is more then they had to do. Passangers currently on the ship are getting, a full refund, travel expenese, Future credit equal to what they paid plus reimbursement for all non gift shop or casino purchaes.

Next cruise cancallled. Those passanagers are getting a full refund, reimbursement for non feundable travel expenes plus 25% off a 3 to 5 day cruise.

Granted having your vacation ruinned like this is horrable but Carnival could have eassly had said we will refund 2 days and travel to those on board, and monies paid to Carnival for the cancalled cruises.

It’s unfortunate for them but they got a great deal from Carnival......

I just read 25 pages of mostly BS. There were a few good posts mixed in. First off, I am going admit I have a "soft spot" for Triumph since my wife and I spent part of 2 week honeymoon on her back in '04. I would also like to add that I worked in the Marine Industry for 10 years and while my work was mostly with the non-commercial side( I did a lot of work with mega-yachts, you know the stuff we all oggle over, usually over 100' in length) my company did alot of commercial work, including the cruise industry. So while that doesn't qualify me as an expert, I have seen ships fail and the parts on them fail. The average commercial vessel will dry-dock approximately every 5 years. The cost, as already mentioned, can be hundred's of thousands of dollars just to lift the ship out of the water, plus any repairs and/or modifications done. Companies don't like to do this, but realize it is a necessary evil . To say Carnival is delaying these dry-docks to help the bottom line is downright clueless statement. Ships are dry-docked on a regular basis not because the company may want too, but because doing so is also part of CG certification process to allow the ship to carry passengers.

There appears to be alot of "experts" here when in fact we really don't know any of the facts. All WE know is the ship is without power and floating adrift 150 miles from shore in the Gulf of Mexico. We know it is being towed to Progesso, and we know that the Carnival Elation has come along side and transferred supplies. We don't know the reason why, we don't know how, we don't when it will be fixed. That also means we don't know if this incident is related in any way to the issues described by posters back in December. It could be, it could not be.

In reference to those generators, most don't realize that those generators have been running non-stop almost since they were put in service. Even when the ship is docked, swapping out passengers between trips, or in dry dock, the generators are running to provide power, so to have one fail, it CAN happen. If that was the case here, what can you say? Yes, it sucks that people were inconvienced, I feel bad for those have had their plans changed, lost vacation, pay etc. but it is a mechanical part and will eventually fail. To say Carnival has been negligent in maitanance is just not fair. Not until we know the true cause of the siuation and that is proven as the truth.

I like that people are on here talking about this, discussing it, but let's sort fact from fiction , truth from fairytail and see what plays out over the next few days, weeks etc.

For the record, I also think Carnival is being fair in their compensation. I am sure no one will walk away from this trip feeling as if they haven't been compensated. For those who think I am drinking the Carnival Kool-Aid, so be it. I am just not one to start posting or making speculation till I have all the facts of an incident.

Best post so far.

Do you really believe that? Do you realize the public relations nightmare that a partial refund would cause them at this point. Don't believe me, just watch the news reports. The media is having a field day with this - First Splendor, then Concordia, now Triumph. Can you imagine if they went on to say that the company was only refunding two days of cruise fare. I agree that a strict interpretation of the cruise contract would dictate that they are doing more than required, but c'mon...in reality, the company is doing exactly what it has to do in a situation like this which is great. However, the notion that Carnival is being overly generous is lost on me.

Not sure if this these issues are related to ccl or the industry as a whole

One thing I do know , I never booked a an inside room and never will

Ships happens and it can happen to any line

I would never get on a ship being down low and not having a balcony , let alone being in a room with more than two peeps

It's got to suck big time

Our daughter in law is on this ship. We haven't heard anything from her. A friend of hers thats on the cruise called her husband yesterday while they were next to the Elation. She said they were playing music and trying to entertain the guest. She said they were making everybody stay in the public areas. She said it was toe to toe people, people laying and sitting everywhere.

Sounds to me as though Carnival is going above and beyond on this one. Let me count the ways.

1. They got to "enjoy" almost 3 days of a good cruise.

2. Getting a full refund of this cruise.

3. Getting a free, or deeply discounted, next cruise.

4. Getting reimbursed for all non-refundable expenses.

Now true, the last 3 or so days of this cruise, will not be fun. But the compensation is great. Also glad no one was hurt.

If Carnival truly wants to make people whole, they will also need to reimburse all verifiable lost wages and costs related to parking, pet care, etc. If they choose not to make people whole, they are doing nothing more than paying lip service.

AND, how many times does a ship have to basically breakdown sailing after sailing after sailing until it finally gets yanked to be repaired????

Answer: Apparently until it breaks down in the middle of the Gulf and requires a tow.

This is NOT acceptable, and i was a huge carnival fan and am a loyal Platinum guest. No.... No excuse is gonna "fly" here.

They have some hard questions to answer. I just hope there's someone who cares enough about the public to ASK them.

I have to agree with you. At this point it seems that Carnival Corp has become unwilling or unable to police itself in these matters. I believe that the US government needs to get involved and require fleet wide inspections and pulling ships with deferred maintenance out of service if the company wants to keep calling on US ports. They are playing with lives, and this last incident seems to be a good wake up call.

What about people who will be missing their employment or those who left children or pets in the care of others? Will they be compensated for all of this, while they are held hostage at sea?

"Hostage at Sea" seems to be a bit dramatic, but I agree, Carnival needs to make people whole--that means paying all expenses related to the delay.

Are they allowing passengers to go back to their cabins to get their medications or to change clothes?

If they aren't allowing passengers to go to their cabins to obtain medications, they need to be brought up on charges. That's unacceptable and could lead to death.

I heard that they were absolutely not permitted to go back to their cabins. Also, all of their bags were packed and already moved to the part of the ship where the put them for debarkation. Looks like they will be in the same clothes for the next few days.

Heard from where? I highly doubt that the bags of every passenger have been packed (by who?) and moved 16 hours after the fire.

And put their kids through collage too.

Yes. They had everybody that had necessary medicine in their luggage fill out a form, and now the crew is working on getting those peoples bags out from wherever it is that they place them the night before debarkation. They absolutely are not going to keep peoples medicine from them, but unfortunately, due to the situation, most passengers that are in need of medication have yet to get it.:(

May I ask how you are aware of such a detailed explanation? Or is some of it speculation?

That would open up a whole can of worms if room stewards were packing bags and emptying out safes. Can't imagine that happening.

That would be the final straw for me. There is no way I want someone packing my stuff--not to mention opening the safe in my room.

I imagine there will be time given to pack when the ship gets closer to port.
