Not sure I understand, but we only tip at end of cruise unless there is a special service or a service performed by someone other than those we tip at the conclusion of the trip.

Oops, I miss read the post. I was shocked when I saw hdawson and wv4891 did not tip....and they seem so nice. LOL!

I use to pre and post tip our cabin person until I figured out it does no good. Guess that puts me in the same column as hdawson and wv4891.

I agree! If someone performs a special service and you may not see them again, it makes sense to tip them. The idea of giving a tip in advance as a bribe to demand good service is insulting to the crew member. It implies that you are afraid that they will not perform their job well. The additional crass behavior of actually telling them that this is just a part of the tip and that you expect and will reward good service is ...well, crass. It shows a great deal of insecurity on the part of the tipper. I prefer the Cunard model of adding a tip, based on cabin cost. We then tip the restaurant staff and the butler an additional amount for good service at the end of the crossing. I've always had outstanding service and recognize that service at the end of the trip.

When I cruise solo, I always tip the cabin steward, the first day, the amount he would have received for the second person in the cabin. I want him/her to know they will not be financially punished for my single occupancy. It would be nice if the cruise line would use some of the single-supplement for this purpose. Other extra tipping is rare. In April I was on the Maasdam and called the front desk to see if I could purchase a boutonnière for formal night. I was told no, but one had magically appeared in my cabin when I went back for my siesta later that afternoon. That person did get extra later that night.

I assumed you meant in addition to normal tips at end of cruise. I always tip room service, specialty restaurants, bartender in casino (my wife gets a coke every night) which come to mind immediately.

I forgot I ALWAYS tip room service, and it helps. I've heard other pax complain about slow room service. A buck or two gets me what I need in 5 minutes or less.

i have tipped in the middle of aa crusie, but i tip for something where the person admits that the cheaper thing is the same. This resultedt in a lesser automatic tip, so i gave him a dollar and still came out ahead. Ill have to try room serivice in the future.

I tip cabin staff extra in the middle of a cruise for special requests-usually involving having people in the stateroom for drinks- where we've ordered hor d'oeuvres and a bar set-up, and perhaps have the attendant serve during the party. This certainly made for a lot of extra work, and the staff were tipped after the fact for that particular service, and then tipped appropriately at the end for "normal" service.

In general, talking about tipping is like asking about someone's job at a cocktail party. Some will look at you like you just spit in their drink, others are willing to discuss it, recognizing that cruising and tipping for service other than at a restaurant is new to many cruisers, and that new cruisers want to know the accepted protocol. Thus the value of these boards.

Beyond that tipping is very personal, and many will fight to the death to defend their tipping (or non-tipping) practices, even by labeling others as crass. Reminds me of the old joke about the nouveau riche man who flashed his gold lighter to light his cigar, and stated "Van Cleef and Arpels," as he pocketed it again. When the man standing next to him gave a blank look, he asked "Whatsa' matter, never heard of it before?" To which the second man replied "I've heard of the company, just not heard it spoken."

I think I'm not sure what I signed up for. I thought this meant tipping in addition to cruise ending tips. I chose "never" because we don't tip waiters or cabin stewards at the beginning or during the cruise...and only tip room service during the cruise. We always tip the cabin and dining room staff at the end of the cruise. I'm not cheap...just a little slow tonight.

Don, $50 per cruise? You must have taken a lot of 2 and 3 night cruises. At about $10.25 per day per person I would figure at least $140 for a 7 night cruise.

I voted that I never tip, until the last night. But, in hindsight, I do tip whomever (whoever??? i never did know which was the correct grammar) brings us our room service breakfast meals.

If I make a special request I will give a tip. I always tip for room service as well as the gentleman who carries my luggage to my room after embarkation. I don't tip the waiter or stateroom attendant until the last night.

Good point there John. I had fogotten just how short they were!! lol

All cruises just go by so fast. It takes forever to get to the date of departure and its over before you blink an eye!!

So, yes, for $50 I prob took a 3 day..

All kidding aside, I now stick to 11 and more days, why pack for 7...

Our upcoming Princess is a 7 day cruise and I agreed since we are having family and friends joining us.

Happy Sailing,

Don

DH & I have cruised on several Celebrity ships, and usually stop and talk to the workers who are cleaning, polishing, etc. and compliment how nice the ship is looking. Later I found out that toward the end of cruise DH has passed out a small tip to several of the workers usually found cleaning in our areas. Usually they are considered the "faceless ones", but they do make the ships look smart and seemed surprised, but pleased.

That is really a nice gesture. Those cleaners are at the bottom of the line, they get a meager salary and work so many hours.

On my next cruise I will also give them some money.

Good suggestion

On our last cruise I tipped the gentleman who was sweeping and cleaning the ashtrays in the casino every night. He was so pleasant and as far as I could see, ignord by all. He always made a point to say hello because I always made a point to do the same. Surprising the friends we make. :)

What is considered an "extra" for the cabin steward to do? If you have a balcony, the glass window almost daily gets crusted on the outside with sea salt, making it very difficult to see through...would you consider it an extra, or just part of his job, to make sure that it was cleaned? (especially on port days when it is NOT getting yucked up from traveling through the water?). If he hadn't cleaned it in a day or two, would you ask him to? Would you tip extra for that?
