blue_water Posted March 8, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 8, 2013 The open-air vendors are on the other side of the fort from downtown and are the typical souvenir vendors who all sell the same stuff, not local crafts that you want to buy. There are really no "local craft" places like on a lesser-developed island. But Tillett Gardens is a short drive and there are some art and craft shops there. There are also some nice shops in Cruz Bay on St John.
Ms411 Posted March 8, 2013 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2013 Gallery St Thomas in town in Palm Passage has very nice arts and crafts starting at $5 and up unit the hundreds. Also in Palm Passage are Just Imagine and Fish Face. Also in town is Shaka Zulu's ethnic African store where you can design your own beaded stone necklaces and they'll make it for you. sail7seas Posted March 8, 2013 #5 Share Posted March 8, 2013 At Crown Bay, they have some stands/stalls with shell necklaces, earrings and the like. There are some other small locally made trinkets.
Livethelife Posted March 8, 2013 #6 Share Posted March 8, 2013 Along the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie there is an Artisans Cooperative in the blue building next to the vendor’s square market near where taxis load and unload. It has handmade soaps, note papers, paintings, jewelry, and toys to name a few things. The hours are kind of irregular and is not always open but it is worth a try.
