Recommended Posts

That's so milquetoast! Give me a velvet portrait of a panther or Billy D Williams holding a can of Colt 45 any day!

Sounds like the "Art Auction" is up to some of the same shifty things it was when "Park West" ran the show.

Look how long it took for Park West to be run off the ships and they are still in the business.

Hate to inform you but Park West is back on the Allure. Couldn't believe they were there on our February 17th cruise.

GalleryDirectArt dotcom. Their website is pretty easy to navigate. I got the piece in a similar gold frame that it was displayed in on the ship. I probably could have saved a few dollars if I got it framed myself after receiving the canvas, but it still came out cheaper than Royal's and I was fed up and just wanted it already.

We have had quite a few pieces of art framed in the last few years. From knowing that Park West used to charge $250 and that was a deal for what we had to pay from a frame shop with a 50% off. Even Michael's was more expensive. I would have it framed if I bought on the ship, now that I have done both.

We bought several park west pieces on NCL ships and really were pleased!

Concur that we bought on RCI and we have been to land auctions. We have never felt cheated by them. They have always done exactly what they said and we feel the price we paid was fair.

I go to the art auctions just to look at the art and have fun watching people spend their hard earned cash on art that is worth less then what they pad.

I enjoy sipping the free champagne(sparkling wine) that they serve with the canaps. The reason for the free champagne is so that some people who are already tipsy will bid on a piece and then buyers remorse settles in.

I agree that doing a search online before buying an art piece is vital. Hence I would only buy a piece in a gallery in my hometown or one where a relative lives such as in Santa Fe so if there is a problem my relative can go to the gallery on my behalf to see whats going on.

I find this post interesting. You go to the art auctions to drink free cheap sparkling wine and have fun watching people spend their hard earned cash on art that is worth less then what they paid? Do you do the same thing in Department stores or any other kind of retail establishment? I mean most of us spend our hard earned cash on things that at point of purchase are worth less than what we paid.

Why is an art purchase on board so funny? If someone likes something and wants to purchase it does it really matter whether it is called art or a trinket? Did the cocktails you purchased on board turn out to be an investment?

Let people spend their money as they wish. The cruise line could just as well dole out free sparkling wine and have people be entertained while watching people spend their hard earned cash in the casino, or in the specialty restaurants, or for a coke card or the wine package or for a drink of the day. Or maybe get a real laugh at the people who spend huge amounts of hard earned cash on a suite.

At least the people purchasing art have something left after the cruise.

I have just always found most of the staff very pushy, they exist solely on commission based on their sales volume per cruise. I don't want to criticize anyone for buying something that they like, if it makes you happy enjoy.

I just wonder how much Park West is paying X,RCCL etc to get the opportunity to sell on their ships.

There were A LOT of false claims made by PW a few years ago in regards to the value of their pieces(Google it)

I just avoid them like the plague, but as my favorite bar is Molecular there they are. It's ok I have the Beverage Package I'll just face the bar not the auction :D

I also just got off Enchantment this past Saturday. At least, the art auction was held in a lounge away from the Centrum so that everyone passing through or wishing to spend time in the Centrum did not have to be inconvenienced and annoyed by the carnival barker auctioneer as used to be the case on Royal ships. Sometimes you could barely walk through the Centrum because of all the" lovely" "art" pieces on display. If there have to be art auctions, I hope they keep them out of the way. JMO!!:)

I don't fell superior just stupid. I "won" a so called painting,it wasn't,paid for the appraisel saying it was valued at $500,paid to have it shipped home.Cost to frame it would have been$400.00,was not a real painting,6 of them were on e-bay for $25.00 each.My DH has requested that I don't win any more paintings.I framed the appraisel instead.;)

Ha...I have two dogs as well so not just a cat person.

You are probably right. I don't think most people are buying "Art" on board a ship for an investment. They are buying it because they like it. No different than buying anything else. But they are always portrayed as suckers.

I have bought Art on board ships and on land, usually the framing costs more than the art work. Every piece I have hanging on my walls I enjoy daily. Bought it because I liked it and could afford it. Not suckered into anything. No more than I was suckered into the money I have left in various casinos. At least my artwork is firmly hung on my walls. The casino money...well...you know.

I,too, have purchased from the "Art" auction and quite pleased. It was never treated as an investment but rather a wall hung reminder of a great week we had as a family. Some pictures are a conversation piece and even give us an excuse to "brag" about a wonderful time. As far as the "dog people" it was only ment as a joke.:) Cheers at the next "free champaign (cough cough) event of the Masters on board.

I hope that those of you who did not receive your art understand that we, the artists, have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars for the sale of works we consigned and for which Art on Royal collected - BUT NEVER PAID US! We are all scrambling to get our remaining art off the RCL ships and we realize that there is little or no chance of recovering the money that was STOLEN from us. We are the good guys, the trusting artists who consigned our art in good faith and trusted that Art On Royal and RCL would not be a part of this fraud which cheated each of you and each of us. Please contact Royal's legal department and customer service immediately and DEMAND a refund or the fulfillment of your orders. Hopefully, they will come to us for the art and pay us our portion (which is but a small FRACTION) of the price you pay onboard. :(

We are all devastated and hope that you will return to collecting our works after proper restitution is made to you.

Thanks !!

I agree with you CruiseLady1. My Cousin is an artist and has her own art gallery. She told me that its really hard to deal with companies such as Art on Royal/Park West. If they are frauding you I would hope you contact the head offices of Royal Caribbean. I really feel bad for you. This is part of the reason why I don't buy Art On Board because I want to be sure the artist is getting paid.

Since you have told me this story I feel like asking a question to the art auctioneer onboard why is it that you did not pay the artist the contracted commission amount?

I know that I would not want to buy art from a company that not only cheats you the honest artist but us the consumers. I love art and go to local art gallery openings knowing the artist gets his or her share.

I wish you all the very best in the future and hope you deal with galleries that give you the commission that you have worked so hard for.

Can you buy the art and carry it off yourself, or does it have to be sent to you? I know this is not practical for those with flights etc, but just wondering.

I do feel that if you like it and buy it, then there is no need to be ridiculed by some people here on CC. The thread is about warning others that the delivery is an issue.

I don't like being yelled at by the auctioneer for at least 15 minutes before the auction, that tells his life story exactly the same every time. Last trip on Radiance we were trying to have a quiet after lunch coffee in the Diamond lounge and the auction was next door - several times. Then on the last day he turned the music up very loud. So it would seem to me that the tactic is some alcohol, plus confusing loud noise, makes people less able to concentrate. The casinos on land use that rouse too on a Saturday night. Then they also asked you to write down the piece you wanted to bid on.

Can't say I liked the process, but there were quite a few attending, and some we spoke to have been very happy with their items.
