To Cheers or not to Cheers...that is the????

DH likes to drink, but I still do not think we can justify the cost. I am a 1-2 drink a day kinda girl most of the time. I tend to like frozen drinks, which are more expensive, but they last longer and are filling. So I just do not drink alot.

That's us, too.:) It would never pay for me to have it, so we won't be purchasing.

We returned from a Celebrity cruise in February and it was nice because not everyone in the cabin had to purchase the same package. I purchased their premium non alcoholic package which included soft drinks, bottled water, specialty coffee, fruit juice, energy drinks, fresh squeezed orange juice, non alcoholic frozen drinks and smoothies. I loved it!! I sooo wish CCL would offer something like this--I would buy it in a heartbeat! I would also get it for my teens on our upcoming cruise.

We are going to try it simply because then I won't always be counting pennies and harping at my husband about spending too much money. I think it will make my cruise must less stressful and his much better too! In the end, it may cost us more but the price of my not bitching --- priceless!

HAHA! I am the same way!! I dont think I will come close to breaking even, but I know my DH will, he likes his beer! :)

Buckets aren't included, but last cruise I asked my cabin steward for one and he left it for me full of ice. I would order beers every time the server came by and eventually I had a small stash in my mini fridge. My g/f and I saved about $200 over a week. Her with Banana Daquiris and me with beer and wine.

I enjoy my drinks and would at least break even, but dh only has 1 or 2 a day.

I don't like to waste money so I'm afraid I would try to drink enough to make up for him

I want to remember my cruise so it's a no for us!

Wish it didn't have to be each adult in the cabin.

I think it would have to do with whether the cruise is more port intensive. If you're going to spend the days more off the ship, why pay for it? I don't think it is being offered on the Sunshine when we sail in June, but with all of the ports we will be in, I don't think it would be worth it for us...

My DH and I opted not to do it. My husband may have 4 drinks at the most in a day, and while I drink a bit more, the amount that I would have to drink to make up for what he doesn't drink would leave the entire cruise being one big blur for me.. :(

Instead I stock up on the drink coupons (bar credits now) pre-cruise and we also be ordering a bottle of the BV Rum and bringing Coke on with use. That all helps to keep the bill down on the actual ship - and will still have us coming in under $700 for the cruise. (Of course I say that now before I have tried the new bars on the Dream... there are some fabulous sounding drinks on their menus and I just can't decide what to try first! :D)

My hubby likes long island ice tea too....occasionally I'd get one too. I tried to price them on the cruise can't seem to find the cost for it. Do you know how much they cost on the ship or how I may find a beverage price list for the ship?

Thanks in advance

It isn't for me with Carnival. On Celebrity I'm interested though because it includes "Starbucks-style" espresso drinks and bottled water for taking ashore. They also don't require everyone in the cabin to purchase it.

We recently returned from our first cruise and our first Cheers experience. In our opinion we won't be getting it again.

Going into it we thought we would have NO PROBLEM getting our monies worth.

Most drinks DH ordered were Rum & Coke ($5.95), sometime's he'd throw in a Margarita or Rye & Ginger just because they were $8.95. DH says he was always too full to "get drinking"...he can't eat and drink....it's gotta be one or the other...lol We also had 3 Sea Days as we missed GT and still barely made the $296.36. In fact, we added up the drinks we ordered and they came to $256 but when you add 15% gratuity it would be $294. It would have been less than that but the last day we ordered more just so we'd break even.

It was nice however, not worrying about having a large bill at the end because we thought we'd drink more.

i can't eat and drink either so that's definitely something to think about that i hadn't thought of before....

The "Cheers" Beverage Program (previously named the My Awesome Bar Program!) is flat-rate daily pricing for alcoholic drinks, non-alcoholic frozen drinks, wine by the glass and soda. While the non-alcoholic drinks and sodas portion of the program are unlimited, the alcoholic drinks covered by the program are limited to 15 in a "day". The program "day" is a 24 hour period starting at 6:00AM and ending at 6:00AM the following day. See Restrictions below.

What started as a trial in August on the Carnival Victory now includes numerous additional Carnival ships due to overwhelming popularity and very few reported issues. The program is now on most of Carnival's fleet offering cruises 7 days or longer. If there will be any continued expansion onto ships with shorter cruises is not known at this time.

The cost for the "Cheers" Beverage Program is $42.95 per person per day, plus a 15 percent gratuity (for a total of $49.40 per person per day). The program must be purchased on the embarkation day or the next day and for the remainder of the cruise. Beverages, including beers, cocktails, wines by the glass, and non-alcoholic frozen drinks all must have a $10.00 or lower menu price to qualify for inclusion in the program. For drinks with a menu price over $10.00 a 25% discount is offered, this includes wine and champagne by the bottle. Unlimited sodas are also included in the program. Bottled water is offered at a 25% discount. See complete details below.

Beverages Included In The Program:

•All spirits (including cocktails), as well as beer and wine by the glass with a $10.00 or lower menu price.

•Sodas and non-alcoholic frozen cocktails.

•25% discount off the menu price for bottled water

•25% discount off the menu price for spirits or wine above $10.00 per drink.

•25% discount off the menu price wine and champagne by the bottle.

Beverages Excluded From The Program:

•Non-alcoholic beverages other than soda and non-alcoholic frozen cocktails.

•Beverages promoted and sold in souvenir glasses.

•Bottles of liquor.

•Bottled water (offered at a 25% discount).

•Beverages offered at gangway while debarking.

•Beverages offered through room service as well as mini bars and/or other in-stateroom beverage programs.

•The sharing of cocktails and floaters.

•Buckets of beer, pitchers of beer, and beer tubes.

•Wine and champagne by the bottle (offered at a 25% discount).

•All spirits or wine above $10.00 per drink (offered at a 25% discount).

•Beverages offered through enomatic wine machines.

•Only one drink at a time may be ordered. No sharing is permitted.

•There is a 5 minute wait time between ordering drinks.

•Applicable state and local taxes will be charged to the guest folio when this program is used in US waters.

•Program allows for up to 15 alcoholic drinks per 24 hour period (6AM-6AM). (see Note 5 below)

•Carnival reserves the right to refuse service for any reason.

•Program is non-refundable.

How to Sign Up:

•On embarkation day or the next day: You can sign up at the Atrium Bar, Casino Bar or one of the Lido Deck bars.

•On embarkation day only: You can sign up at the temporary area set up on the Lido Deck where you previously could sign up for the Bottomless Bubbles (Unlimited Soda) Program.

•You currently CAN NOT sign up prior to boarding.

Notes:

•1) After transitioning to Australia the Carnival Spirit is no longer offering this program.

•2) There are absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS to the rule that everyone in the same cabin (21 years of age or older) most purchase the program. If they allowed one exception it would open the door to everything.

•3) If you purchase the Cheers program on the day after embarkation day, any drinks you had on embarkation day that would have fallen under the Cheers program will be removed from your Sail and Sign account or price adjusted if not fully covered by the program and you will be back charged for the Cheers program for the embarkation day.

•4) If you order a double it will count as 2 drinks against your program daily limit of 15 alcoholic drinks.

•5) Once you hit the program daily limit of 15 alcoholic drinks some cruisers have reported they were still able to purchase drinks at full price, others were not (seems to depend on the ship). Again, Carnival reserves the right to refuse service for any reason.

•6) You still must sign all of your drink slips after getting a drink, just like you would if you weren't on the Cheers program.

•7) The program can now be used on Half Moon Cay.

Love these Cheers threads.

1) You're on vacation

2) Unless you are a really light drinker, you will drink more than normal, especially if you're not off the boat for 6-8 hours every day.

3) Drinks average about $8 each, with the 15% tip auto-included

So...

1 bloody mary or mimosa in the AM

3 drinks during the day (pool, library, sports bar, wherever)

1 pre-dinner drink

2 drinks at dinner

3 drinks at the show/casino/club

That's 10 drinks = $80. $30 a day savings and no worrying about the bill hassles at the end. Seems pretty obvious to me. If you're spending the majority of your time on the boat and you like to have a drink while you relax/party, this is an easy decision. The other option is to bring two bottles of wine and some mixers on board, buy a bottle of liquor from Bon voyage and then see what happens.

I'm strictly a beer and wine guy. If my beer or white wine goes warm or flat, on Cheers I just go get another. I think booze is the one thing that burns people at the end of the trip. I'd rather just budget for it up front and worry more about having fun and not what my bar bill will look like at the end.

Here's what I wrote in my cruise review from our January Breeze cruise:

We purchased the CHEERS program immediately upon boarding the ship in the Atrium Bar. It took a while to get the bartenders attention and subsequently purchase the program. Once we did, he added the sticker to mine and my husband’s cards and then ran off without taking our drink order. This of course upset my husband. Who drops $790.28 on a drink package (for 8 nights) and doesn’t want a drink? Eventually he came back and gave us our first drink! We were anxious to try this package! Typically we would normally spend about this much on our bar tab anyways. The best part about this is that it gives you the flexibility to try new drinks and/or drink more than you might otherwise. Never during the week did you have to think about how much you were spending since the initial buy in was already charged. Did it save us any money? Probably not. Did we drink more than we normally would have without the CHEERS program? Absolutely! Before the cruise, I had posted on one of the Cheers threads that 15 drinks is not that much for someone who is a “drinker”. At the time, I fully expect my husband or his friend to be the first among our group to hit the 15 drink max. I didn’t expect to be the FIRST one of our group of 4 to hit the MAX! I did so on the second night (bear in mind I had begun drinking around noon that sea day at the pool). We were in the Red Frog Pub that evening when the bartender slid my card back to me and quietly said “You’re at your limit” lol. Then I grabbed my husband’s card for my next drink and maxed out his card on that drink. I had ordered one more on my husband’s friend’s card too. This brought my total to 17 drinks in one day – and I probably wouldn’t classify myself as a big drinker either. The only reason my husband and his friend didn’t hit their limit is because they have purchased 2 of the tubes (100+ ounces each) which we paid for separately ($29.12 each). So, will they allow you to purchase more alcohol after you hit the 15 alcoholic drink limits? Yes. Will you be able to use your roommate’s card to purchase drinks after you hit yours? Yes. For the most part, the program was full of Pros for us. Now, the cons we experienced: Each time someone in our party went to the bar to get drinks for us (all 4 of us purchased the CHEERS program) they had to take each of their cards with them. Luckily, each person did not have to physically be at the bar to get their drink. The bartenders told us that as long as there was ink on the X line it didn’t matter if one of us signed everyone’s receipt. The bad part of this is it takes forever for the bartender to ring up each drink separately, not to mention for you to sign and them to sort each receipt. Because of this, we noticed it would take substantially longer to get a drink on the ship. Also, once the bartenders saw that you had the sticker on your card, the service wasn’t exactly speedy. Since the package is charged the 15% gratuity (and not each individual drink) they don’t seem to have much motivation for good service. I will say that the few bar tenders we encountered that consistently gave us great service (there was only a few that come to mind) we had no problem giving them tips in cash each & every time. Also, the bartenders are able to check how many drinks you’ve had at any point. Once or twice I had inquired where I was in terms of my drink count and the bartender was happy to tell me. As far as I know, the sodas did not count toward your 15 drink max. My recommendation to Carnival: It would be nice if you could purchase multiple drinks on one card at a time. Doing so would be more convenient for the cruiser as well as the wait staff. After reviewing my sail n sail statement with both of our cards, below are the breakdown of total drinks per day for myself & husband combined.

Day 1 – 15 total

Day 2 – 30 total

Day 3 – 4 total

Day 4 – 9 total

Day 5 – 25 total

Day 6 – 6 total

Day 7 – 19 total

Day 8 – 1 total

Total drinks on 8 nights = 109 drinks for 2 people

Using the drink price range of $5 for beer & $8 for mixed/frozen drinks (plus 15% gratuity), this would have cost us between $627 (all beer) - $1003 (all mixed/frozen drinks). Knowing that we drank a mix of beer & mixed/frozen drinks between us, I’d guess we fell somewhere right in the middle which is what we paid for the total program ($790.28). Knowing this, the stats support our stance that we got our monies worth on the package, even though we don’t feel it especially “saved” us money. It’s evident that after nights of drinking the larger quantities, we were less inclined to indulge. Even being moderate drinkers, I give props to anyone who can consistently max out the drink card daily.

What is your take on the "Cheers" program?

To Cheers or NOT?

My "take" is that hubby and I would hit the break-even point in about five rounds of drinks. We could do that by lunchtime on a cruise, so for us, it's a good deal.

Yep:) I didn't explain that very well the first time. The package was $17 per day and was well worth it!

HeatherC430,

I'm curious why you think (or experienced) the bartenders are less motivated by dealing with guest on the Cheers Program? This is actually a concern of mine since I am planning on purchasing the Cheers package. My concern is in the MDR when I want a glass of wine (or 2 or 3) during dinner and can't get it in a timely fashion. The dining (and wining) on a cruise is a big thing to me and something I really enjoy. We might end up purchasing a discounted bottle for that reason. Or maybe I can walk in with my 2 glasses (that I ordered 5 minutes apart) and then order a 3rd when I get there! LOL!

I am with the opinion that prepaying gratuities doesn't motivate or unmotivate an employee to do a good job. You gave good employees and you have bad employees or maybe they are just understaffed perhaps. The guests on the Cheers package pay 15% gratuity just like the guests who are not on it so why would that make a difference? My DH is a waiter at a 5 star resort which has a 19% automatic gratuity. Because it's automatic, he is not less motivated at all, in fact he works even harder in the chance of getting that extra cash tip. It's nice when he brings home a Ben Franklin. ;)

For DH and I ( really more me) its about not worrying how much is being spent. I never truly let lose because I’m one of those what if people and try not to spend a lot in case some emergencies happens. While DH is the carefree we only live once type... ( we make a great match :D) So the cheers program always my OCD and anxiety to not be a factor and I actually have a good time.

Also I happen to have our drink receipt still in our suitcase from last year we totaled up what we drink and then what I would actually drink if I didn't have to worry...,. We would at least break even....

Hope this doesn't get me in trouble..... But we used this link and compared it to our drink receipts from last year and they were dead on

[http://www.shipcruise.org/carnival-cruise/69-carnival-cruise-drinks-prices ( this site uses the ( , ) instead of (.) for there dollar amounts)

So just think about what you would drink ( morning, afternoon, dinner, and evening then total it up) I hope this help but in the end only you know if it is worth it for you . Keep in mind soda is also included but doesn't count towards you drink limit..

Thanks for the link! Gives me some great ideas what to drink...in November!
