Villefranche to Monte Carlo

We will be tendering in Villefranche and would like to get off the ship for part of the day. We thought about taking either the train or bus to Monte Carlo to go and look at the fancy yachts in the Marina. How would we go about doing this and how long would it take. Or is there a marina in Villefranche that we could walk to instead of going to Monte Carlo. Thanks for your help

Hi. It's easy enough to do. From memory there is a steep walk up to the station at Villefranche and you can get a train there to Monte Carlo. Do make sure you get your ticket before you board the train. Personally I would say there are a lot more interesting places than Monte Carlo to visit, such as Nice, Antibes or Cannes which are all in easy travelling distance, or Villefranche itself is very pleasant with a decent beach.

If you want to take the bus to Monte Carlo, it's the #100 Eastbound bus. It will say "Menton" on it, as that is the last stop. Returning, you will want the #100 Westbound Bus that says "Nice" on it. From the port, you walk up and slightly to the left and follow the bus stop signs. Going to Monte Carlo, you will want to be on the water side of the street (there is a tourist office right there). Across the street by the stores is the Westbound bus stop. Buses run about every 15 minutes and it's about a 20-minute ride. It was 1 euro as of last year and you pay the driver.

Right there in Villefranche where you tender there are some shops and restaurants, but it's a fairly small area.

You could also go to Eze, which is on the same bus route.

Do you know if the harbour is open where you can dock walk and see the yachts or is there security that blocks it off? Also, any cafes that are down by the harbour that you would recommend for lunch or a class of wine?

Great info – thanks –

We arrive on May day (May 1) . Do you have any idea if the schedule will remain the same for a holiday? If not – do you know of a link to get a holiday transportation schedule? I would hate to wait more than 30 minutes for a bus, when our time is so limited.

Thank you,

M

I'm hoping you can help me.....

We will be docking in Villefranche on May 1. Last time I was in Monaco, I missed seeing the casino so it will be my first stop this trip. We were planning to take the train, but apparently May 1 is a holiday and am curious as to whether or not the trains will be in operation. Will the casino even be open?

If you google Tom port guide Villefranche you should be able to locate a fantastic guide that has full instructions on how to reach Monaco. Including photos to use to find the station. I used these when we were there.

Monaco is very compact and easy to get around on your own. For those travelling with kids, there is a great open air pool on the dick side too, so take your swimming things with you.

You will be able to see all of the boats, but just how far up and personal you can get to them I'm not too sure.

We took the little red train around Monaco which you can catch outside the Oceangraphical musuem which is near the palace. Just try googling pictures of Monaco so you can see what the Marina area looks like.

Eating in Monaco is very very expensive. I bought two take out ice creams from near the cation and they cost €5 each and that was for take out not sitting at a table. We were there on a Sunday and yes there are restuarants on the sea front.

The train station is VERY easy to get to, and you can pretty much see it from the tender dock, so it is simple to find as well. Basically you walk to the right along the shoreline and then take the stairs up to the station (these are right before you get to the beach).

It is a short and easy train ride to Monaco.

The last time we walked down by the docks was probably two years ago, but then you could see plenty of gorgeous yatchs. It is also fun to walk up by the casino just to see the cars :D

Normally the trains run on the Sunday schedule on holidays, if that helps you. I am sure they will be running (barring a strike)--they ran from Villefranche on Christmas Day when we were there.

BTW--Villefranche is a lovely little town in its own right.

And to show how different everyone is, my entire family would rank Monte Carol above all of those, with the exception of Villefranche itself which we do love.
