End of Radisson Ambassador Report

We had hoped to use our free drink coupons before we checked out but no bar opened before noon and they weren’t good in the casino. We passed them on to some people who would be there to use them. Ditto with the match play which were good on the tables which also weren’t open.

So we played the slots until time to catch the cab to the ship. Still found them to be loose enough to break even or get a few dollars ahead.

Anthony once again came to get our luggage and was just as helpful and pleasant as when we arrived. He got our luggage outside, found a cab and told us what the fare would be. Even though we were only two miles from the Pan American Pier the fare was almost the same as from the airport which was a few miles further: $17 flat rate plus $1 per bag.

He let us out too far from the luggage area. I asked to be taken closer or for him to help us. He did neither so I took a couple of dollars from the tip, handed it to him and left to find help.

One more thing about the Radisson. I would stay there again pre-cruise. It was still a good place. Just had a few

things that I hope they will learn to do better.

Official Start of Day One Onboard

Quickly found a Celebrity Agent who got us a porter to take the luggage to the receiving area. He also was kind enough to get us a wheelchair for Cil (she has balance problems) and took us immediately inside.

I must say, it was the easiest security check of all time. It seems that arriving flights come in over a long period of time so there was hardly any line at 12:30. People seemed to come in moderate size groups all day, never causing any significant wait.

We got to the check-in area in no time and although we went to two different windows we were both through in minutes. I’m starting to like this San Juan thing. Sure is an improvement over some places I’ve sailed out of. And with the long wait I’ve been hearing about in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, I may have to do SJ more!

We were met by Captain’s Club Hostess the lovely Ti-Ann who graciously escorted us to Bistro on 5 for lunch. It was so nice to see her after not sailing with her for quite a while. We were seated before 1PM in about a half filled restaurant. I had the ‘Cowboy Crepe’ (sliced flank steak, bacon, Provolone, etc), Cil had the ‘Indian Summer Crepe’ (zucchini, red peppers and other veggies), Roger had a breakfast one that I can’t remember the name of but it had eggs, mushrooms and I think sausage. All of them were quite good. Of course it’s a first meal on the ship so dessert is required. Isn’t it?? I had Crème Brulee and they had Crepes w/Grand Manier and candied orange peel. Our cabins were announced as ready so we waddled off to explore them.

Cil wanted to go and talk to them about her dining assignment so we sat in the Rendezvous for about 45 minutes. Waiting her turn. I did not exactly get a warm and fuzzy feeling from the woman who was in charge. Rather brusque actually but I didn’t need her attention as I wanted to see how my late seating table worked out before (or if) I asked for a change. If I need to have some adjustment made I will look for someone a little more ‘guest friendly’ to help me.

After that we went to the library. They have a somewhat small selection of fiction but some of it is quite new. I found two gems among them (I hope my friend teedee is reading this). I found Tim Dorsey’s new 2013 book and an older Jimmy Buffett I hadn’t read. Those books with the six or seven I brought should get me through the 15 nights. J I know I read too much but I love it!

Missed the CC sail away get together. It was very overcast and generally dreary so I took a nap until the boat drill. I still had my back pain and was in need of a little extra sleep. It really helped. I got up feeling much better.

Our boat drill was in The Rendezvous’ Lounge and if you got there early you got your pick of comfy chairs. It was fairly painless and wasn’t very long although some (obviously new) cruisers were a little panicked because they couldn’t see the person who was demonstrated how to put on the life vest. Maybe they thought they were on Carnival and might really need it! Cheap shot, I know. Sorry!

Almost missed dinner. Looked at my watch wrong I guess because I thought I had a half hour but I should have left then. Up side to that is that there was no line and I was really only about 5 minutes late. I always request a large table so I was a little surprised when I was seated at a table for 6 with only two people there. They were very nice (he’s a CPA, she’s an Account I think) and had only been on one previous cruise which was Nowegian to Alaska ten years ago. I found out they were not going to be doing any formal nights so not sure if I will be there alone some nights.

It was the normal first night menu (Spaghetti Carbonara, Prime Rib, Pork Chop, Jerk Chicken and a Fish) so I won’t bore you with a complete menu. I did hear from first seating people that the fish was not very good, but the Pork Chop and Prime Rib were very good. I had no appetizer but the Thai Beef Spring Roll my tablemate had looked very good. My choices were the Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup which is one of my favorites (this was some of the best I’ve had), Prime Rib (rare as ordered and HUGE!), baked potato and Cheesecake. As stated earlier, dessert is required on the first night! Don’t forget that or you’ll make the Pastry Chef cry! J

Only disappointment I had at dinner was trying to find a glass of Pinot Noir. All the wine stewards walked right on by. I asked the bar server to send someone over (twice) to no avail. Finally the Head Sommelier (who was on Mercury my last cruise there) stopped by the say hello and I got my wine. It did come in time to accompany my Prime Rib but I hope I don’t continue to have this problem. If I stay at this table.

There was nothing exciting going on after dinner so I went back to my cabin and got a little unpacking done, watched some TV and went to bed. If the weather is good tomorrow I need to be up early to drink some Mimosa’s and hot the pool!

Bye For Now!

Summit Day 2 April 21, 2013

Woke up at 7 today so I guess I’m all caught up on my sleep! Got everything unpacked but needed some hangers before I can put it all away. Left a note on my handy little magnetic dry erase board (sticks right to the cabin door) for my CS to bring me about a dozen extra so by this afternoon everything should be ship shape. I’ve got to live in this room for over two weeks so if it’s strewn about I will continually be looking for things.

2166 is an Ocean View cabin, midship. Not exactly my favorite but it’s okay. I do notice there is not as much hanging space as I’m used to. There is only the one closet (two doors) and one door that is just drawers and the safe. If I were traveling with a male companion (because I won’t travel with a female companion in he same room – we’d never fit all our stuff!), he would likely have to get another cabin if he wanted to hang his clothes and have a place for his shoes!! J There are also only the two small doors on the desk/vanity area with open shelves inside. Lord knows I need a LOT of makeup to look this gorgeous! LOL! No mirror with hidden space behind. But it’s okay. Just calls for a professional organizer. They need those onboard! For hire! J

The Elite Breakfast is in the Normandie Restaurant which is always so nicely decorated. It’s a great place to start your day. Little surprised that you can’t get a Screwdriver (one was ordered at our table and they were told no deviation from the written menu). Only Bloody Mary’s and Mimosa’s or Champagne. Kind of strange since they obviously have

Orange juice (the best too, freshly squeezed) and vodka. How hard is that? Oh well! We’ll all survive the loss of a Screwdriver but it just makes me wonder why this ship seems to have, judging by many things I’ve seen and heard so far, a culture of ‘rules are rules’ rather than ‘we aim to please our guests’.

Today is a sea day, a glorious sea day! How I love those. And on this trip they are in short supply. I went up to the pool area about 10 afraid of all the broken chairs with stained and torn cushions I would find, or if I could even get a chair because there are so few of them! I was pleasantly surprised to see an abundance of lounges with great, almost new looking pads. I found a chair easily, got my towels and was in business just like on every other X ship. Maybe all the broken down ones are in another area but around the pool they were fine. I had almost considered bringing a towel I have that fits over the chair with elastic because, after what I had read, the pads seemed almost ready for the dumpster. Glad I didn’t bother because these are fine.

The weather is great today. The Captain said there could be showers but I got in a whole day of sun with just enough of a breeze and minutes of overcast skies to keep you cool.

Today was the big, gala ‘Brunch’ (if you’ve ever read any of my stuff you know I’m not a fan) from 10AM to 2PM. Cil and Roger went and while Cil was happy with her plain pasta with oil and garlic at 10AM, Roger said it was awful trying to get eggs. By the time he waited in line for the guy cooking the eggs, then backtracked to the place to get bacon and finally waited on a bagel to be toasted he was exasperated and his food was cold.

I, on the other hand, waited less than 3 minutes for a freshly grilled burger on a toasted bun with grilled onions and mushrooms. Added some fries, got my condiments, a glass of water and I was inside the buffet in the air conditioning, eating in about 5 minutes. I like that a lot better! And the burger was great.

The rest of the day I spent out by the pool. Even watched the Officers vs. Guests Volleyball game while reading my Dorsey book ‘Riptide Ultra Glide’. Zany book so perfect for the beach or pool.

Managed to get in a nap before the Elite Cocktail Hour which is being held in Michael’s.

There are just barely enough chairs for our group so I know they will move it for the next cruise. Same menu of drinks and exactly the same hot and cold canapés as on other ships of this class. I mean, when they hold this tray out to you and say ‘fish bite?’ don’t you immediately think ‘fish stick’? I know I always do. Then if you try one, they taste like chicken. So odd. When I was in Costco before I came I wish I had bought one of those big $7.98 bags of Rice Crackers and Nuts. It’s what I call Oriental Mix and its sure good with drinks! Anyone going to Costco? Hint, hint???

I had dinner at 8:30 and it’s formal night. Had a glass of Champagne in Cellar Masters before going into the dining room. Normal menu for first formal night: Rack of Lamb, Black Salmon, Tournedos of Beef (which I had) and Duck. Along with the beef I had Beef Carpaggio, Corn Soup, Caesar Salad and Cherries Jubilee. All quite good, prepared just the way I ordered.

Didn’t do the show but did hit the casino. Let’s just say the slots on the ship are not as loose as the ones at the Radisson! No, I didn’t need a guard to bring my money back to the cabin! In fact, I was lucky I still had my sea pass card. Lord knows those machines sucked everything else out of me! J

So that was my day. Might not seem like a lot of fun if you are a party-party person, but to me, being on the sea, surrounded by new friends and old, is what it’s all about. To me, it was a heavenly day!

Bye For Now!

Great job as always...wish I had time to go to Costco for snack mix...... I actually missed the deadline for drycleaning so I have to bring dirty dresses and have them drycleaned on the ship.....no matter how hard I try I can never get it all done in time!!!!!!!! This work thing really gets in the way of my cruises.....

We are doing the fall repo back to San Juan and then the following week's rt. I'm looking forward to hearing the schedule on the turn around day . . . we plan to sightsee on that day and I wonder how early we can get off the ship and also what time is "all aboard."

Hope you have a great cruise . . .

Sounds like heaven to me, too Gail!

I wish I could be there. I need a rest and it sounds like you're doing what I need - so can you do me a favor and do everything twice? Well, except the desserts. Neither one of us can handle more than one of those. LOL

Joe (Ellen's husband) had an emergency appendectomy tonight. He'll be in the hospital for a few days on IV antibiotics and take some time to heal. Thank God the appendix didn't rupture. But he sure spent a weekend in a lot of pain.

Other than that, no news is good news.

Looking forward to hearing all about tomorrow!

Embarkation in San Juan was wonderful when we sailed in March.

Please tell Ti-Ann that the Heisels say hello and will hopefully see her again in July! She is truly a lovely person and a wonderful Captain's Club hostess!

Summit Day 3 April 22. 2013

It has just occurred to me that I have neglected to address the many postings concerning the condition of this ship. A lot has been written about ripped upholstery, dirty this, dirty that, cracked, broken or unpainted everything, etc, etc, etc. Here’s what I have to say to those naysayers: WHAT SHIP WERE YOU PEOPLE ON???? I’ve been onboard for three full days, part of those three days I was actually sober, and I have seen none of this.

Oh wait! There was a cracked tile in my shower! And one towel I got out by the pool had a bleach stain about the size of a dime. I was appalled by both of these serious violations and took both items (that tile was a bugger to get out!) directly to the Captain! He offered me the Penthouse Suite for the next cruise plus a 100% refund on both cruises, all the wine and liquor I could drink and $1,000 credit in the gift shops if I would PLEASE just not write about the towel and the tile! Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so dedicated to CC. Of course I had to refuse. Never would I let my ‘millions’ of fans down. I MUST report the truth! So, knowing that I could not be bought and that you would all hear about these Summit shortcomings, I actually saw the Captain out by the pool late last night inspecting the pool towels! What a guy! LOL!

Seriously, this is not a brand new ship but it has been recently refurbished and Solstizied (not quite sure how to spell that and would you believe it’s not in my spell check?). Carpets and upholstered furnishings have all been redone. They have new dinnerware in the dining room. Linens and towels are good. Yes you may see a few spots of rust or a wooden railing that needs sanding and varnishing. If those kinds of things bother you then I suggest an ‘S’ class ship. Or another cruise line. It you think the things I’ve mentioned add a cozy charm or character and a sense of history then you are my kind of people and welcome aboard!

That should get me more than a few negative comments! To those I say you just have to lighten up and not worry about every glass with a spot! Have a drink. Or, if you’re a real fuss budget, two or three! Cruises are vacations! Meant to be savored and enjoyed! Not nitpicked to death!

Ok, so I don’t seem to be able to sleep past 7 or 8AM. But that’s okay because each new day brings more new things to do, see or learn from! Today we are in Barbados. The ship is cleared before I even leave my cabin. Lots and lots of people getting off for tours or just taxi’s into town or to the beaches. I’m thinking of taking a taxi to

The Boat Yard.

I am still enjoying having breakfast in the Elite area of the Normandie. I like that they now have the mini bagels, lox, cream cheese, onion and capers. There are almond and chocolate croissants, fruit pastries, pitchers of juices and smoothies along with fresh fruits and yogurts. I love having two or three cappuccinos in place of regular coffee. I start with a Mimosa and would have a screwdriver if they were available. I haven’t had a Bloody Mary. But there’s still time.

It’s so beautiful out today but the Captain did say there was a likelihood of showers. I’m going to lay out by the pool for awhile and see how the weather looks before I decide on a trip to The Boat Yard. I think most everyone got off the ship because I am pretty much all alone by the pool. Really nice.

Met up with Cil and Rog for lunch at the buffet. On the carving station they had beautiful, golden brown whole turkeys. I couldn’t resist a slice with a baked potato and cranberry sauce. The turkey was very juicy. For dessert they had coconut ice cream. My lunch was great! Only thing I would have done is added almonds and chocolate pieces to the ice cream to make it Almond Joy Ice Cream! Yummy.

Back out by the pool, it has rained for just a few minutes then stopped and now there is not a cloud in the sky. There is a beautiful breeze and I think I have decided to stay onboard today. If it’s perfect, why change???

Party band Xtasea is onboard and I think they are the best St Lucia band I have heard since Fusion. Fusion is still my favorite because I LOVE the voice of their lead singer. She has such a pure, almost spiritual voice that I could listen to her for hours. But these

guys are very, very good. I think they will be getting off in SJ but I hope I’m wrong.

Had to come in about 3:30 to get showered and changed. What’s better after a day in the sun than a long shower with creamy coconut body wash? No, they don’t have that here. I brought it with me and I love how it smells. Makes me want a Pina Colada!

Tonight there was no Elite Lounge as it was the Senior Officers Cocktail Party in Revelations on Deck 11. It was not full. There apparently are not that many Elite’s

onboard. It’s a funny size group. Just a little too many for Michael’s but not nearly enough for Revelations. However, it sure did make getting drinks and food easy! In our regular drinks at 5 in Michael’s we have discovered Joseph and we try to be sure he is our server. He always remembers our drinks, has a second on deck before you finish your first and can be very funny! (His ‘day job’ is out by the pool selling beer and soda beside the burger place so I get to talk to him during the day and he is always cheerful and upbeat.) We were lucky that he was working this event and he took excellent care of us. Five of us actually sat and talked until after our 8:30 dinner time.

I’m still not a big fan of the MDR (on this ship) and it’s ‘policies’ (never had this problem until this ship). My tablemates (both of them and remember I asked for a large table) might or might not have been at my assigned table and not wanting to eat at a table alone I decided to eat in my cabin. Got a club sandwich from room service. I was thinking I would order off the dining room menu but after I looked at it I decided on the sandwich.

The highlights of the menu:

Mediterranean Seafood Orzo

Pan Seared Trout (according to Cil and Roger this was fantastic!)

Lemon Pepper Chicken

Veal Chop

Pan Seared Sirloin Steak

Nothing really exciting on this menu so if I was going to miss a dining room dinner, this was a good one to skip! J

Tomorrow should be another great day in the Caribbean Sun.

Bye For Now!

Gail, Glad to hear the ship is not as bad as some say it was. I heard this last year also and could not find what people were talking about. I often wonder why people have nothing else to do but look for rust. We have always had sail boats and when you are out to sea, the air makes things rust. So what!!!

Keep the ship in tip top shape and I will see you on Saturday at the Sunset Bar. We love all Celebrity ships and will keep sailing them as the people who work on them make them the best.

Hi to all who are taking the ime to read and post. For all you lurkers, if your camera is turned on I CAN SEE YOU and some of you need to get dressed! !:D

We are in Antigua right in the center of town. Roger is having a beer and I'm having a frozen Mango Margarita! It's hotter than H**L but this is an open air place with a NICE breeze.

Finishing this drink and going back to the ship for lunch and pool time. Life is so tough

Thanks for all the nice comments!

Hi Gail,

SO NICE to see your Live From Thread. They were greatly missed. Sorry for being a little late to the party, but your thread started when I was on Eclipse.

Gail - Can you ask about a new feature to be introduced on Summit on the next sailing ? It's called "54 Below". Would love to hear what it's all about. I noticed this tidbit in a Celebrity marketing flyer. Have a wonderful Cruise !!! :

Beginning on May 5 experience Broadway on board all Bermuda sailings with the talent of 54 below – New York’s newest, coolest cabaret venue.

Hi Sue!

Will probably have to give Woo Hoo IV a miss unless it magically gets REALLY cheap at the last minute. Am blowing my cruise budget out of the water this year with my European adventure.
