Cheaper to get two rooms than one

I was curious if anyone else had run into this. We just booked a Fantasy cruise in August, and noticed 3rd and 4th guest rates are very high compared to past experience. I'm guessing it's because it's in the summer, when families travel and Carnival can afford to charge more. However, we first looked at oceanview cabins. Getting two OV was only about $120 more than putting all four of us in one. Ended up booking a GS. Worked out that rather than putting all four of us on the GS, it was actually cheaper to get the GS AND an inside cabin across the hall. Getting a GS and OV was exactly the same price as all four of us in a GS. We ended up getting a GS and an OV down the hall a bit.

It just surprises me that Carnival would do this, basically encourage us to get more rooms than we would have otherwise. Even if you just use the second room as a closet, seems there's no reason not to do it.

Yupper..Both our Fascination cruises were cheaper 2 per cabin compared to 4 in 1 cabin. Really nice having more room and extra bathroom for less $$.

Our Easter cruise we didnt get 2nd cabin till later in our countdown closer to cruise time..But after watching it was cheaper so we switched to 2.

I find that this happens quite a bit when I price some other cruise lines. Some lines I have found dont really discount the 3rd and 4th guest at all, making it cheaper to get two cabins. When I know Im going to have more than 2 in a cabin i usually lean toward Carnival since they do usually discount extra parties in a cabin. In your case, perhaps its because its summer? I dont typically cruise in the peak summer season so Im not sure, but at least you will be so much more comfortable in two cabins instead of just one. So in the end it seems to have worked out better :)

Our family of 3 is sailing on the Sensation in July. We usually either get a GS or balcony. Well, we found that we could get 2 OV cabins, right next to each other, and put 2 in one room and only 1 person in the other. Putting all 3 of us into a regular balcony room was $150 more. This way, true, I give up my balcony, but I gain a bathroom :D, which will be nice having my 13 y/o son and 26 y/o daughter with me. I might actually have a room to myself ;).

Well I am furious! We had to pay an extra $60 for a 2nd cabin on our Fascination cruise.;)

It's not rocket science.

4 in a cabin = category X, total of $2000 for four

2 in a cabin = category Y (can't fit four in a category Y cabin), total of $850 for two

2 category Y cabins costs less than 1 category X cabin because category Y (2 person cabin) is a lesser category than the 4 person category X cabin.

I'm sure that explains some situations... but not mine. If I put my family of 4 in a GS it would cost $4500. Getting that exact same GS with two people, and putting the other two across the hall in an inside stateroom was $4400. Carnival is in essence paying me to take another of their rooms off their hands. :-) Seems to me they've already got my 4 on the boat, they'd want to consolidate us as much possible, and get others across the hall who may play in the casino, buy drinks, etc.

So funny to see this thread. When I booked the Fantasy for August I called my PVP with the plan to book a GS for 5. Being the awesome guy that he is, he realized we could get an adjoining OV and come out cheaper. Win-win!

Heh... I actually stumbled on it myself on carnival.com, by accident. I first priced out two OV rooms, and then "what the heck, I wonder if a GS is cheaper." But I accidentally did 2 people instead of 4 for the GS at first, and saw the price. After correcting my mistake, and already knowing the cost for two people in an OV, I quickly made sense of the situation. :D

Then called my PVP the next morning, all proud of myself and ready to impress her with my booking knowledge. Told her the date, ship, and said I was looking at the GS. Before I could impart my knowledge, she said "oh, I can get you the GS but with 4 of you it will actually be cheaper to get another room as well".

Talk about my bubble bursting...

Yep, my sister is going on a cruise, and I looked at what it would be just to add me to her (and her son's) room. It was actually over $1000 to add me as a third occupant in an inside room. That was more than the cost for two in an inside room. It was ridiculous.

Yea one the elation for 4 people in a GS it is $4000, but, for 2 people in the GS and two others in an interior across the hall it is only $3400. $600 less for taking a second room. How odd is that??
