Things to do in San Juan?

That aren't a city tour or a fort tour. Not interested in the Bacardi distillery either.

Did I run myself out of options there? LOL

Thanks in advance for any responses!

The fort is free, so take a taxi - or just walk. I believe the Distillery is free also. Personnally, I took a taxi to the fort, and walked back to the ship, and visited everything inbetween.

Thanks but I'm actually looking for something that is none of the above.

Maybe like a beach or some cool bars to visit :p

I second the Segway tour, did it three times:)

Also last trip did the Flavors of San Juan tour, we went to three different bar/resteraunts and had appetizers and drinks. wonderful guide, still a bit of a tour but the focus was on the food/drinks. Great explanations of the drinks and food along with great company. Being a bit of a picky eater was surprised to love everything. Did the evening tour, a bit of rain walking place to place but ended up great fun and great food.

Just to set the record straight, it is not free.

$3 admission.

Or $5 if you buy tickets to both forts. We took the free trolley to the first fort, then walked to the second one and then took the free trolley back to the port. For any history buffs, a great way to spend the day. The fort gift shops sell bottled water and sports drinks only but there are a few outside venders near fort #2 that sold shaved ice and canned pop.

:)

Too bad there is not a Bar-Hop type tour like the one offered in Cozumel.

That would be a fun.

This is also what I am looking for!

Walk over to Raices for a beer/drink and a good meal. Grab a cab to Condado Beach afterwards.

When you say that you don't want a city tour does that mean you are also not interested in "cool bars" in OSJ & want something outside the city? If so I can't help. But if you are OK with cool bars in OSJ just walk around until you find one. We saw lots of interesting places. I hate the chain but there's a Senior Frogs right by the port. There's also a casino nearby.

You can fly a kite on the big lawn by the fort.

For $0.50 pp each way you can take the ferry to the Bacardi factory & back again without actually going to the factory.

I think there's an eco tour & a ziplining tour out of the city.

Check out the San Juan Chamber of Commerce site, the official tourism board & tripadvisor for more suggestions.

There is sooooooooo much to see in San Juan other than the forts and Bacardi plant. Old San Juan is full of museums and historical sites that are either free or a couple of dollars to get in.

I recommend the Museum of the Americas. I wish I had more time to spend in there. It's directly across from El Morro. Next door to it is the National Gallery. The San Juan Cathedral is the second oldest in the Americas. The Capitol building is a sight in itself. It's made from all marble. Go wander in for a half hour or so. No shortage of things to see, just do a little research. Google some of the places from the links.

My new favorite beach is El Escambron Beach. It's about a mile or so down past San Cristobal fort, past the Capitol and just before you get to the Caribe Hilton. This is NOT a tourist beach, but a more of a locals beach. I've been twice and will be going again when I'm back in SJU in a few weeks. If you're going on a port stop during the week, it probably won't be too crowded. I was there last month on a Sunday afternoon and it was a little crowded. Very lively. Lots of families were out, people playing music and BBQing, etc. If you want to get away from the tourist crowd and hang with the locals for a while, come here.

As far as bars, when you're walking through OSJ, you'll come upon plenty of them. Blessed Cafe had a good rum punch menu. There's lots of nightlife at the bars over by the Starbucks, across the street from one of the plazas (sorry, I don't remember the name of this one). The Nuyorican Cafe is an awesome spot to go listen to some live salsa music in the evening (if you're sailing from SJ and staying a night or two before) and hit the dance floor. Cheap drinks, fun crowd, good times in there.

My most recent Valor review in my signature is full of recommendations for San Juan. The first 6 pages are all about SJ and will give you ideas on places to visit, eat, drink, and party. :)

Thanks for the mention before this was moved from the Carnival board, Cruising Golfer. ;)

I will be following this thread since I am also uninterested in the forts or a distillery tour of IMHO a mediocre rum. Never having been there I'm trying to keep an open mind but reading a lot about OSJ I'm not excited about it... and sadly I'll be in that port on my Birthday.

I love history in general and do look forward to seeing the cobblestone streets and old architecture but that will get old quick and no desire to tour the fort. I'm expecting it to be similar to Old Town Alexandria, historic building and streets along with CVS, Walgreens, Ben and Jerry's...etc. I'm hoping to get away from the more 'Americanized" part, I can see all that 20 minutes away from my house.

Beaches, drinks, and local cuisine is my goal.
