Prohibition Party - Allure

Could someone give please me some info on the Prohibition Party? Is it like a dinner mystery theater? Thinking about doing it on Allure next week. Thanks.

I believe that for $35 it an open bar themes party. I just think its a night out but hopefully some one will come on and give more information

The Prohibition Party was one of our favorite events on the Allure. It has a gangster/speakeasy theme to go along with the Chicago show.

 

You receive free drinks included with the fee (some in coffee mugs in accordance with the Prohibition theme), and most of the guests dress up in 20s costumes. All of the staff are in character. And there's live big-band type music.

 

You need a password to get in, and you enter through a "secret" back entrance. There are other surprises ... but I don't want to give it all away.

 

Don't let the custumes deter you. You can easily get away with a black dress, pearls and a boa. Guys can wear dark suits with a fedora. They even have them for sale on the ship.

 

We dressed up and had great fun. I highly recommend. :D

Oh wow...I've slept since then :eek: but I'll try.... We thoroughly enjoyed the Prohibition Party last August on Allure. We booked it & paid for it ahead of time (there's a limit of 60 I think), and here's how it worked....

 

We received an invitation in our cabin, along with 2 lapel pins and a password. When we went to the Jazz Club at the appointed time, we were met outside the door by a crew member dressed as a 1920's gangster. He checked our lapel pins, and we had to whisper our password to him. Then we were led through a different crew door and down a back hallway into the Jazz Club. (I mean the Speakeasy!;))

 

There was live music, a dance floor for those who wanted to try the Charleston, a fake horse race with fake betting, and it really was loads of fun. Most of the folks dressed a little roaring 20's style for the occasion. Some outfits were elaborate, and others just had a prop or two and looked fine. Some people wore normal clothes. A variety of gin cocktails were served in china teacups, speakeasy style, and there were lots of nice little canapés and munchies.

 

I'm not a great gin fan, but some of those drinks were really good and we actually really enjoyed them! DH and I did kind of try to dress the part....I wore a black dress I already had, added a hip belt, feather boa, and long pearls. I also bought a 20's style headband with a feather, a long cigarette holder and a fake cig. DH found a vintage tux jacket which he wore with dress pants and a tux shirt with bow tie. We bought him some spats and a big fat cigar for a prop. (If he'd had a top hat, he'd have looked just like the Monopoly man - haha!)

 

It's not an open bar. The cocktails are gin drinks from the prohibition era, but they really are quite good. You can order other things, but I think normal bar charges apply.

Thank you so much for the information ... I am so pleased that we have booked the Prohibition Event. It looked/read like a fun thing to do and we just booked it for the enjoyment and something different to do factor.

Am really looking forward to it... we have it reserved for our first cruise, but very tempted to book it again for our B2B cruise.

Sorry! The Prohibition Party is unique to Allure - it's because the big production show in the theater on Allure is the musical Chicago. The Prohibition Party picks up on the 20's gangster era theme from the show. It's not offered on any other ship.

Its all up to what works for you in my opinion...We did not really enjoy the event, maybe we are to young (early 30s) for the 20s theme doing the foxtrot. Although if they would just let you mingle and place some party tables, instead of seating you towards the stage it would be a lot better in my opinion. The staff does do there best to entertain you.

We were seated on a sofa with a coffee table and chairs with 2 other couples in our little seating area, but it was rare for all of us to be there sitting at the same time. Seems like there were several 'conversation area' groupings of furniture similar to ours in the room. The dance floor was directly in front of the stage and there were tables/chairs on either side. It was kind of like a nightclub and people moved around quite a bit at our party. Also the food was served buffet style, so people were moving around that table as well.

 

I do remember a couple of foxtrots, but most of the music was much faster Jazz Age type stuff (lots of Charleston, Lindy, Black Bottom) and several of the dancers at our party were wild, creative, and lots of fun to watch!

 

Maybe it differs according to the crew members who work the party???? Or maybe the mix of guests differs and that makes the party different???:confused:

If you had the stage, they placed the chairs in a half circle pattern with the dance floor in the midle, row after row expanding the amount of chairs going more to the back (like a theatre is build)...So talking to somebody from one end of the row to the other was near impossible, you had to get up and doing so, you blocked the view of others.

We really were glad to get out of there and go straight into the nightclub :D

Not trying to be a buzz kill but I will be the second to say it is not worth the $70. They say unlimited but the drinks were not always ready. Thought the whole thing was just ok. No dinner and a slightly hokey plot but not a murder mystery.

 

We had booked it for both weeks on a B2B and after the first week we cancelled the second week.

 

If this was not on a ship and something you would book for a night out my guess is the company would be out of business rather quickly. Just my thoughts.

 

That being said try it you may enjoy it.

Yes the drinks were unlimited. There were hors d'oeuvres as well that were quite tasty.

The party is fun if you understand the 1920s speakeasy club concept and want to just have fun. I have no idea how to Foxtrot but we danced anyway :D. I don't think age plays into it as there were couples in their 20s there that were having a great time. There are pictures in my Allure blog in my signature.

This is the same setup we had 2 weeks ago, the wait staff circulated with drinks and the hors d'oeuvres.

Same here. There were plenty of drinks and food. We had a blast. We stayed in costume for the rest of the night and people were stopping us all over the ship asking us about the get-ups. Some people even thought we were from the entertainment staff.

We had the same experience - after the party we strolled the Promenade and went to the casino for awhile, and people kept asking us where we had been and why we were dressed up. We also had a wonderful time and would do it again. (and I learned that I like Gin Rickeys!:p)

 

No, it's not a dinner event, but there was plenty of food. And you can have as many gin cocktails as you want. I sampled 2 or 3 different ones, but the Gin Rickey was my favorite. Our experience was that we had our next drink on the table before we had finished our last one, so the drinks were free flowing for us all evening.

We are not that much older than you - my husband and I are in are early/mid 40's. (Though I do not mind when people think I am younger..lol)

 

We used to go to an old time dancing group (and our then teenage sons came too)..we learned how to do the Maxina, Foxtrot, Butterfly Waltz (which looked like a demented seagull), Gypsy Tap and several other dances. Would like to try and "attempt" these again if the occasion arose. (Our oldest son - who will be 21 on Saturday, is trying to teach me how to "dance" like younger people do today - minus the crumping and break-dancing flare..lol)
