Ocean Boy Posted June 17, 2013 #101 Share Posted June 17, 2013
Very good i could not have said it better,my next cruise i plan on tipping the twenty four dollar a day and not a penny more.Could care less what anyone thinks. If you want to tip more good for you. :)
And you shouldn't care just as I could not care less how much you, or anyone else, plans on tipping. I also don't care, nor is it my business, how much people get paid on the ships. Although, if I ever do decide to go work as a physician on the ships then I might then care a bit about how much that position pays.
Ocean Boy Posted June 17, 2013 #102 Share Posted June 17, 2013
With my time and now traditional dining you pay your tips before your cruise . However with traditional you can opt to have them added daily once you sail. With my time you 'have' to pay the tips upon final payment date of your cruise. on the other tipping thread someone actually saw this list on the stewards trolley. Yes you can have them removed I know,so yeh pointless I agree. But I have heard about staff in general having these lists? True?who knows:rolleyes:
I don't think that you can have tips removed if you pay them up front. It can only be done if they are being added to your seapass account. abridalmaven Posted June 17, 2013 #105 Share Posted June 17, 2013
Right I see. Thanks for the warning. I know I report nasty, malicious, bullying, rude people or those that break the board rules. At least I don't do it for the slightest infraction. Rare marielco Posted June 17, 2013 #107 Share Posted June 17, 2013
Please stop with the slave labour thing. If you feel that way boycott cruising. It's kind of contradictory.
Well said. The OP is being criticised for calculating what a Cabin Attendant might earn - it is none of our business he is told. Yet constantly on these boards over and over we are being told service staff on the ships are worked like press ganged sailors for slave wages. k9x8 Posted June 17, 2013 #108 Share Posted June 17, 2013
Yes I tip the taxi, the waitress, the hairdresser. Once the service has been carried out and we are happy. The whole pay tips before your satisfied is still a big deal to most of us. When we dine across the pond, we pay a service charge up front at many restaurants. Additionally, in some places we must pay extra to sit down at a table. That's foreign to us, but when in Rome... Please stop with the slave labour thing. charmay Posted June 17, 2013 #110 Share Posted June 17, 2013 That's exactly it,we all are used to different things. We just need to try and be more understanding of one anothers ways. We are not bad people just used to it being done a different way.

Mattingly23 Posted June 17, 2013 #114 Share Posted June 17, 2013
There's a thread about room service tipping. Interesting that no one has yet flamed this poster or poured scorn on the fact that there is another tipping thread like they (yes - you - you know who you are) did to me on this one. Happy Cruising :-)
People are generally patient with those that do not understand our culture (or refuse to). I haven't read that thread, but my gut feeling is that no one was trying to calculate someone else's salary and determine if they deserve it or not. That's crossing the line. Debde Posted June 17, 2013 #115 Share Posted June 17, 2013
If tips were rolled into the cruise fare it would just be a matter of time before people started posting about how we should be tipping the staff because they work so hard. This is just a subject that will never go away no matter how the cruise lines package the gratuities. Think about it, previously we would read about how people should tip the required amounts and not stiff the staff . Now that there has been a move to auto tipping the threads are now about how people should tip extra on top of the charged amounts. Now the people who tip extra are "propping up" the folks that just go with what is charged to their accounts. This is an escalating issue that will never end on these boards until people start concerning themselves with their own actions instead of everyone elses.
My hero!!! ;) When it comes to this, I've decided I will tip how I feel is correct and not worry about what anyone on CC says!!! Agree with you. :) You know, reading through this exhaustive and redundant thread has made me realize that some people do ask out of genuine sincerity and simply do not know what to do... I hope as members, we are gracious to them and answer their questions accordingly. Others choose to make this their platform for various points of view and that's when it can get ugly and rude. . Frankly, I don't base my tips on how little or how much I think they make - that's really none of my business. I don't tip extra because I feel sorry for them and on the flip, I would never not tip extra because I thought they were making too much.
Newtoncruise Posted June 18, 2013 #118 Share Posted June 18, 2013
I posted this earlier today on a thread about WOW envelopes and thought it warranted a thread of its own even though it is 'another' gratuities thread. I know this is me in the minority and a lot of you will have seen my views on tips before but........... I am always surprised such as on a couple of threads this week when people regularly say they tip the stateroom attendant, waiter and asst waiter more than the shared $12 per person per day. If you add up how much they are earning they are on a real good whack based on the number of rooms or tables/people being served. I really do think $84 per week for a double occupancy stateroom is a very good rate when our last stateroom attendant serviced 12 rooms on IOS - a staggering $1,008 per week. Thanks - Happy Cruising :-)
Just retread the OP. If they are on a good whack then good on them. They work very hard for it. I think our tipping should be based on the service we receive. If they do well out of it then I am pleased to have been some help........ I suspect they only do ok though. I think I will take a few extra dollars this cruise and tip some who are not expecting it......... Happy cruising.......
FLACRUISER99 Posted June 18, 2013 #119 Share Posted June 18, 2013 I see no reason to tip anyone extra above the $12 per day amount. However on occasion I have tipped the cabin attendant an extra $10 - $20 for doing an extraordinary job! It just felt right. SHICHIDAN Posted June 18, 2013 #120 Share Posted June 18, 2013 Did not read all prior posts so if I am breaking a thread flow excuse me. We normally travel with five. Those are broken into one top suite and one inside for second or third bath, naps and overnighting if all don't stay in the suite. We pay the steward $525.00 for a seven day. That is $75.00 per day or $15.00 a cruiser. Have never had a poor steward so are good with this plan. The man/ woman takes care of two rooms with one being substantial in size and always makes you feel like your entire family is very important. When they feel like they matter also it makes for great interaction during the trip for us.
