How far out do you reserve shore excursions?

This is a complicated question. If you book ahead you cannot use any shipboard credit to pay for the excursion. There is the pay, cancel on board and rebook to use shipboard credit device.

Those of us who frequent the boards tend to arrange private tours, for flexibility and cost and a better experience than the O excursion.

As previously mentioned a tour with limited availability and great popularity could sell out. Also if enough pax wait until on board to book the tour might be have already been cancelled as I did not sell a minimum number of seats. You'd never know if you did book earlier the tour might have met that threshold.

The only downside to booking in advance I can think of is as sitraveler pointed out that you must pay in advance though it is refundable depending on the amount of notice.
