How much cash?

$100-$150/day [in travelers checks...which can be cashed at the pursers desk for no fee]. While it's doubtful you'll spend that much, it's so much easier to bring to much....and return the excess TCs to your bank..than to little

Going on a 5-night cruise on the Holiday, stopping in Costa Maya and Couzumel. How much cash would everybody recommend taking for two adults?

Thanks,

JD

well how much do you plan on drinking or buying off the ship?

all taxi's and tours not with the cruiseline will be needing cash.

for my spouse and I between us we took off the ship around $500. we also used a visa debit whenever possible. I don't think we ever spent more than $250 of the cash.

so it just depends? think of how much you might spend at a day at your local beach or the equal of what your day in the port would be!!

The drinks, and most everything else, you buy on the ship will go on your S&S card. If you're paying your S&S with a CC you won't need to worry about that until you get back home. The two exceptions that come to mind are the bingo games and what you'll gamble with in the casino. You'll also want to take a bunch of $1 bills to use for tips (baggage handlers at the port....$1 or $2 per bag) and for room service on the ship (rough guide is $2 per person per order).

Tips will be automatically put on your S&S card for the room steward, wait staff and some misc. others. You may want to slip them some extra cash at the end of your cruise if you find their service warrants that. Same with your favorite bar tender/server, tips are added to the drink price, but some tip a little extra along the way for excellent service.

All shopping, taxis, drinks, meals, and excursions (not booked through Carnival) while in port will need to be paid for with cash (or CC if accepted).

So it sort of depends on how much you want to spend in the casino as well as off the ship while in a port. I like to take more than I think I'll need (at least $100 per person/per day). One thing to remember before you put your last quarter in the slot machine on the last night, set aside money you might need for taxi, meals, parking, and etc. for the trip home!

JD,

You are quite welcome. The reason for my response was quite simple... how can anyone know if you will be spending $5 for souvenirs or buying his and hers Rolexes? How can anyone know if you will walk around the ports or buy $100 excursions? How can anyone know your spending habits, other than you? Perhaps the question was phrased incorrectly... A better question might have been, "how much do you suggest I bring for incidental expenses?"

Eliot's reply sums it up nicely, I think.

I'm a solo-cruiser, and I average around $35-50 per day on a 5-nighter. (The Holiday is my favorite ship!)

I don't book any excursions, but grab a cab when in port and go to a park/beach (Chankanaab on Cozumel). Cabs are $10 per cab for up to 4 ppl, entrance to Chank is $12pp - well worth it. Lots to do there. If you're going shopping, there's a great area right at the Puerta Maya Pier, OR you can take a cab to San Miguel (the town), and shop there. You can get a really good lunch at Pancho's Backyard - two locations - one in San Miguel and one at the PM pier - very reasonable prices. Last cruise, I had a margarita, salsa/chips, and a cheese quesadilla - all for $10, including tip.

You can spend as much or as little as you want. I also enjoy just walking around and looking and taking scenic photos...costs nothing.:)
