what to read about Alaskan cruises?

The two books most often recommended on CC have been:

  • "The Alaska Cruise Handbook" by Joe Upton
  • "Alaska by Cruise Ship" by Anne Vipond

They provide a good overview of the ports and the interesting sights for tourists. Both have large pull-out maps. The Upton map is detailed and heavily annotated, and is the one I brought along on my cruise.

"The Alaska Cruise Handbook" by Joe Upton

I was pleasantly surprised how well written this book is. I highly recommend it. It not as much of a typical tour guide (e.g., Fodor, Frommers, Lonely Planet, and like), but concentrates on the history and context of what you are seeing.
