Suggestions for Tortola

This will be our first time to visit Tortola and would really appreciate what you think is the number one thing to do or see while we are there. We are a family of 12 our ages range from 10 to 70. Thanks in advance

There are several #1 things: Cane Garden Bay a short cab ride to the north, the Baths (boulder-strewn seascape) a ferry ride to the east, or Jost Van Dyke a ferry ride to the north.

For others the #1 thing is avoiding everybody else's #1 thing. These people can visit less-traveled Brewer's Beach, even closer than Cane Garden, or more remote beaches to east or west. There is a high spine down the middle of the island with great views and hairy driving.

My opinion is that it takes several visits to any port to do more than scratch the surface.

You've given me a great choice of selection for us, I will now do some research on them, so that we have an idea of what to take in. Nothing worse than to visit an island and not have some idea on what to do.

Tortola is one of the more beautiful and lesser-developed islands of the major eastern Carib cruise stops. The beaches are the main draw but an island tour is also very nice. CGB will be where most folks go because it offers the amenities, many others will head for the Baths on Virgin Gorda. Brewer's is the same taxi fare as CGB but has only 1 beach bar and will be less crowded than CGB. Other beaches are nicer but will not have any amenities for you.

There are many, many threads with detailed descriptions of the beaches of Tortola and the other BVI islands which can help you better understand your beach options. You wil also find many details on the Baths which is a unique experience but can also be crowded because many others will be going there.

As noted earlier Jost Van Dyke is an option with White Bay and several beach bars but it takes some time to get there and I doubt that fits your needs. So take a look at earlier threads on CGB and Brewer's if a beach sounds right, or the Baths if a ferry, taxi, andwalk down and back up the trail sounds interesting. Otherwise a simple island tour with any port taxi will be nice.

Enjoy our favorite island!

I meant to add that you can also take a charter daysail out of Road Town, and with a larger group like you have that is very doable as long as your time in port is long enough. Here are a few operators out of the East side of Tortola that may have something that will interest you (all dot coms). The itinerary could include a stop at the Baths on Virgin Gorda, a snorkel stop at Norman Island, and lunch on Cooper Island or marina Cay, for example. There are also other smaller operators available. The islands of the BVI are a great place to enjoy from the water.

Aristocat Charters

As the crow flies, about 2 miles from near end to near end. There are plenty of kinks in the road which add some distance. At worst it's a short drive or, if you're masochistic, a long walk.

BB & CGB are a short but winding drive from one another so you could visit both. Taxi fare from cruise dock is the same for both.

You'll see Smuggler's Cove on the West End and Long Bay (Beef Island) on the far East End near the airport, these are the nicest beaches in our opinion. Very few ppl at these 2 beaches because there are no amenities.
