its about 2 2 1/2 miles from pier. A quick cab ride, a good 1/2 hr. walk . I'd jump in a cab.

 

Or you can take the SL2 bus-that-pretends-to-be-a-subway-train from the pier to South Station. It's a pretty short walk from there.

Google Boston Harborwalk to get a map of the route along the Harbor, which I think is a really nice walk. The first part between the pier and the South Station area is less interesting.

 

If the weather is poor, you can take the Silver Line to South Station and transfer free to the RedLine Direction Alewife to go one stop to Downtown Crossing where you take the Orange Line direction Oak Grove to Haymarket.
