Aplmac - A Big Thank You

Barbados Dept. of Archives has excellent records preserved

and your chances of finding what you're looking for are very good

as long as what you're looking for is pre-1900.

I used to do quite a bit of research there, so I know what is held there.

http://barbados.org/barbados-national-archives.htm#.UVtEbzeQMS0

will provide some limited info, including a telephone number.

The email address you see there will prob. be defunct

since Sunbeach.net recently turned Toast as a going concern!

If you play with the (Google Earth?) satellite-map at

http://barbados.org/maps_google.htm?mapPoint=161

you'll see the roundabout I refer to below, and get a feel for the Where of it all

You need to go North from the Port (along Spring Garden Hiway)

at the end of which is a roundabout at the bottom of University Hill.

At that point, you're very nearly there!

A little past the Esso gasoline station immediately on your left

is a turning on the right leading UP a slope and your taxi driver should know where, from there!

Staff are knowledgeable and helpful and can sense a serious researcher *wink*

It's about a 5-10 min. drive from the Port, no more.

The reading room is air-conditioned...both for your comfort and for the future preservation of the records.

I want to thank you for your information and guidance on the Archives in Barbados. My sister and I spent two hours at the archives and were rewarded with seeing our great grandparents actual marriage certificate. What a feeling to see it and now we have the name of our great great grandfather! The church they were married in is still standing. We are hopeful to go back to Barbados to see the church they were married in!

Again, many thanks!

You're ever so welcome: glad I could help.

Glad you could taken your gen.research a few generational steps forward/back lol

Yes, it sure crawls yer skin when you have original documents to hand!

I recall a hastily-penned last Will & Testament that began with the words...

An alarm being sounded by the firing of guns and ringing of bells

(The French fleet was off the island, intent on attacking!)

I am called to action and therefore hasten make this my last will and testament..

The guy obviously signed the thing, grabbed his rifle,

gave the wife a quick kiss -and he was out the door!

I'm not sure if he ever made it back to the house safely

but you sure as heck could sense the urgency with which he scribbled that one!!
