bigeagle12 Posted September 7, 2013 #476 Share Posted September 7, 2013 Ain't happening. If they were going to do that, it would have been much easier just to incorporate it into this latest policy change. Baby steps my friend. Wouldn't want the smokers madder than they already are. Look at Celebrity and they did it just that way .. one step at a time.
Cruzin-K Posted September 7, 2013 #477 Share Posted September 7, 2013 On some cruises I've never known which side of the ship was the smoking side (outside) because people were smoking on BOTH sides:( Hopefully this will be enforced a bit more as well. I'm not sure why Allure/Oasis will have the port side for smoking and the rest of the fleet will have the starboard side. Any thoughts as to why
ARCruisinNana Posted September 7, 2013 #478 Share Posted September 7, 2013 I would think that changes, if any, would be made to the use of e-cigs.
Elizanessie Posted September 7, 2013 #479 Share Posted September 7, 2013 On the Reflection they had four outdoor areas that I'm aware of. May have been more. Deck five they had nice comfortable chairs and ashtrays on the port side which was covered. They had a section on the pool deck port side that was covered. They had an area in the sunset bar on the port side that was nice and large and they had a smoking area starboard at the Mast Bar on the deck above the pool. There were plenty of places. What we have here is dramatics which does not surprise me. Only place for smokers when weather is bad is in the comfy chairs port side deck 5 ..right outside the entrance to the solarium...oh yes that really makes the non smokers happy when they see a large crowd of smokers there. "cough cough" hand over face, dirty looks....oh wait darn it I guess that would be dramatics.
dixieva Posted September 7, 2013 #480 Share Posted September 7, 2013 Good try. Those that gamble will still gamble .. it is as big an addiction as smoking. It would also get more non-smokers into the casino. And best of all it would get the smokers that are only there to smoke out of the casino. So here is my concern about the casino being the only indoor space that smokers can light up on my next RCI cruise which is on Grandeur. Will the casino be filled with folks coming in just to smoke and not gamble? I love to spend time in the casino and already have to limit my time in there due to the fact that I have asthma and really can't be around smoke without coughing up a lung. I am a former smoker so can sympathize with the smokers who are upset about the new policy. But I wish that the policy allowed smoking in at least one of the indoor bars so smokers could have a choice of indoor smoking areas.

The number of smokers in the casino will definitely be increasing. I hope they improve the ventilation.
rubrrick Posted September 7, 2013 #482 Share Posted September 7, 2013 You wait and see. If Obama can change his mind about bombing Syria, RCI can surely modify a smoking policy. This has nothing to do with the leaders of the U.S. Government. You type in large letters...is that to get everyones attention that you know more than anyone else? Please tell us, how many times has Royal Caribbean made a change, then changed it back? Banning the sale of liquor thru the shops for use onboard? NO! Banning Diamond members from the concierge lounge......and that was almost a war zone on this board. NO! Banning smoking in cabins? NO! Royal Caribbean won't back down on this either. They may open up a couple of more outside areas, which would be OK. But come the first of the year, there will be no more smoking on balconies, nor special ashtrays given to balcony cabins for smokers to enjoy thier habit. It's more for safety reasons, but I'm sure it is for health reasons as well. Rick

I hope that they will install signs in the casino that say "No Loitering" because if someone just comes into the casino to smoke that is exactly what they will be doing. gerif Posted September 7, 2013 #488 Share Posted September 7, 2013 I just dropped my Jan. Adventure of the Seas and rebooked on Carnival Valor. The lady at Royal said they are overloaded with people switching cruise lines this morning. I know the ship is not as nice but $400 cheaper per cabin and better location. Even for a free cruise AND $400 extra, they couldn't get me to do that - but have a good cruise. Sailed Carnival once before I even had anything to compare it to and never went back. Met some wonderful people there, big fun crowd :D

deedeetoo Posted September 7, 2013 #491 Share Posted September 7, 2013 The only change I can see them making to the policy would be the reconsideration of the ban on e-cigs. I can imagine them deciding that they went too far on banning them also. Other than that, I think the ban is here to stay, and is probably just the first step toward a total ban, though that is probably years away. I don't think that is going to work either. Casino employee says-you're not playing just smoking so you have to leave. Cruiser sits down at a machine, puts a couple of dollars in and smokes. Last year there were some women who came into the casino every night just to smoke and usually ended up standing behind whatever machine I was playing. Said something to a casino employee and he said he could not make them leave if they were not playing just smoking unless it was formal night and non-smoking. I think my addiction to gambling is just as bad as my addiction to smoking was!
tiessa Posted September 7, 2013 #495 Share Posted September 7, 2013 Didn't hurt Celebrity. Give it time.;) baby steps. I think it will have a bigger impact on RCI. As other cruise lines have banned smoking in various areas, more smokers have migrated to RCI. I think the percentage of smokers is now higher on their ships than on the others when that decision was made. Is it enough to affect the casino? I don't know. We'll see. Maryscooking Posted September 7, 2013 #496 Share Posted September 7, 2013 Celebrity did not ban smoking in the casinos at first. They started with a policy similar to the one RCI is implementing. The casino will be next. So true. Everyone predicting doom and gloom for RCI needs to only look at Celebrity's results. And my feeling is that because RCI attracts more families (ie, slightly younger crowd, less likely to be smokers, more likely to worry about exposure to 2nd hand smoke), that they will fare even better than Celebrity.
