Rock of Ages on the Breakaway

It was one Great Show! This was the Best ever on the Cruises that I have been on.

I would have been very happy if I saw this show on land anywhere. The Music was from my era so that helped quite a bit, and being a Guitarist with live band experience, I really enjoyed the total Production. They got a Standing Ovation at the end and we left wanting more. (I didn’t see anyone walk out, but I was totally watching the stage lol)

NCL puts it in the Daily that it might be inappropriate for some, but I didn’t really think it was really all that bad at all. I’ve seen Network TV Shows do and say most of the same and of course there’s HBO, where there’s even more adult content than the Rock of Ages Show. If the kids see the show and understand the interplay, then they are already learned in the ways of the world, so no biggie.

From other reviews on different Breakaway cruises, I read that some of the people walked out of the show and were taken back by some parts of the show. These cruisers would probably be better off on a Holland America cruise.

NCL…Great Job with the Breakaway and with “Rock of Ages”! Now we are really Rockin at Sea! The way it should be :D

I loved it too! I saw it on Broadway and this production did it justice. With the space they are provided to sing, dance, etc...they do a GREAT job. My shows' audience gave them a standing "O" too. Only maybe five people left at different parts of the show - Im not sure why - maybe they had to go potty! who knows. It is a great show. very entertaining.

All the cast is talented and I saw a few in the elevator one day on the ship and told them "GREAT SHOW". :-)

Is the Rock of Ages show the exact same show you would see on Broadway? Did they shorten it on the Breakaway, or change up anything?

Thanks

I remember it being pretty similar to the theatre show-wouldn't like to swear as has been over a year since saw that. It is certainly different to the film!

I thought it OK/good..

Cheryl did not care for it, nor another CC couple we sailed with who saw it in Vegas earlier this year (ten times better in Vegas was their comment). Also another CC'er who we've sailed with a few times did not care for it in the least - and he is quite the show goer/critiquer.

Oh well... different strokes for different folks!

Here's hoping that Legally Blonde on the Getaway will be more enjoyable next year!

We saw it with another couple and we all loved it. None of it bothered us but could see it's not for everyone. I especially loved the music. We saw the previous cast as it was their last week on the Sept 8 week. They were great!

MUCH better than the film!

Very definitely. Loved Rock of Ages on the Breakaway, as well as Burn the Floor. Between the shows on Epic (Legends and BMG) and Breakaway, NCL offers the best entertainment of any cruise line, hands down.

Now, Rock of Ages uses plenty of varrying 4 letter words. If someone has never heard those words before (and you know the ones I'm talking about...if not, listen to the late Geroge Carlin's routine on the words you won't find on network TV), don't go to the show.

To me, I thought it was a great show. Then again, I sailed the Breakaway in June. That cast was fantastic.

I thought the dialog and script was a bit rough at the beginning and difficult to follow but it got better and better towards the end. The music and especially the band were great. The people I saw walk out of RoA were umm mature folk who probably didn't appreciate the racy scenes and rock music. The writers/choreographers definitely tried to get some shock value ;).

I enjoyed Burn the Floor more for the fantastic dancing and music, and total lack of a script that woiuld require me to concentrate or think :p:p.

Have not seen this particular production however want to add a different viewpoint on the show itself. My background is in theatre, I worked professionally when I was younger and my husband and I have been avid theatre goers for decades. We also volunteer at local theatres and are exposed to a wide range of diverse quality theatre. A Broadway touring production of Rock of Ages is the only show we have ever walked out on at intermission. It was that bad!!! I'm not referring to the acting, singing, or dancing but to the show itself. We went to see it because we enjoy the music of that era - it's what we grew up on.

What we didn't expect was to have every other word be a 4 letter one, to have simulated sex acts on stage, to have choreography that borders on porn and to have onstage female nudity. There is a point of conveying "sex, drugs and rock n roll" for authenticity to the subject matter and going overboard for sheer shock value. The raunch factor on this was so high that it was clearly designed to shock. On top of that, the story line itself is very poorly written and totally predictable. The only redeeming thing about the show was the music and even that was not good enough to make us sit through the 2nd half of the show. We were not the only ones who walked out at intermission.

Perhaps the NCL version has been "sanitized" a bit but I'm guessing that the shock factor is still pretty high. Honestly, I was surprisd that NCL chose this as a centerpiece of their onboard entertainment. There are MANY better shows that they could have chosen that would have been much more suitable for a cruise environment where families enjoy going to the shows together. One thing I love about cruising is seeing people exposed to the magic of live theater - some for perhaps the first time.

Parent's be strongly cautioned that this show is not suitable for kids. Please google info and reviews about the show. Obviously, different families have different value systems but unless you are OK with taking your kid to an R rated movie, I'd advise skipping ROA.
