sirwired Posted October 25, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 25, 2013 Well, if you don't need cancellation protection, at the least you need a policy from somebody (not necessarily RC) to provide international medical and medevac unless your regular health insurance covers it. Happy2cruise Posted October 25, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 25, 2013 For us medical coverage and medvac is very important.
Rare Scrapnana Posted October 26, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 26, 2013 Most US health care companies do not cover you when you leave the country. Anybody can have an accident or get very sick and need to be medevaced off the ship to a hospital (possible in a foreign country). Can you afford a possible $50-100,000+ in medical bills? Rare Keith1010 Posted October 26, 2013 #7 Share Posted October 26, 2013 Always remember that one of the benefits of the insurance is if you become very ill on a cruise including at sea. Even if you are healthy, things can go wrong very quickly. Keith
sirwired Posted October 26, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 26, 2013 Well, to be fair, a lot of health plans for multi-national companies do have international health coverage. Mine does. Don't think it includes MedEvac though; can't say I've really looked into it. As a side-note, as a reminder, no insurance plan pays for MedEvac off of the ship. If this is done at all (and it is quite rare) it will be done free of charge by the Navy/Coast Guard of the country that you happen to be sailing near; no private company has the equipment/staff to do this. (And few countries have it either... appropriate helicopters and the skills to fly them for an overwater rescue are not common.)
