Sail and Sign Cards

Here's a golden oldie.

My very first S&S card on my very first Carnival cruise aboard the Holiday, July 1986.

First_Sail_Sign.jpg

You hold on to that card, now..

and remember to leave it to me, in your will.

Never seen that card: very interesting!

This is now the oldest known cruise-card: issued in 1986.

Previous oldest card I have or know about is a 1992 card in my collection.

Nice to know there were cards prior to 1990!

All my questioning of long-time cruisers

shows that most cruisers were given regular metal keys for their cabin door,

and they just handed them in at Guest Services and wandered off the ship!

Many cruisers simply Can't Remember now! :D

I'm saving this picture to my collection of card pictures

so I know what to look out for!

WOW, that is cool

I think I have more of my real old ones than I do of my recent ones!!

Back then, you did not receive your S&S card when you checked in, and you were given a separate cabin key. If you wanted to pay with a credit card, once you boarded you went to a table, usually set up on the Promenade Deck, and signed up and were issued a S&S card. If you wanted to pay with cash, no problem, all bars, shops, Shore Excursion Desk, and Pursers Desk took cash.

I have all my cards, except the first cruise I took in 1993 on the Festivale.

===> Well done: so happy you kept them all.

I wonder even if S&S cards existed then. hmmmm?

Your question has just been answered in posts above this one ^ :)

Never got a metal cabin key, always had the rectangular plastic key with the holes on one end. Remember, when the Holiday was new she was a technological wonder. She was the third largest ship sailing. Only the Norway and the QE2 were bigger!! How much things have changed since then!!!

Very interesting!

And then there were/still-are? some older ships where you get two cards

...a cabin-door-card and a charge card.

"Ocean Village Two" was still like that, back in 2008!

For some years (before they initiated their SeaPass system)

Royal Caribbean issued the passenger with two cards.

I have examples in my collection.

Then they brought in SeaPass where one card did everything.

Yes that is how I remember it. I remember being able to pay with cash, no sail and sign card. But then saw all these old cards and I thought I was wrong. Now it makes sense you had a choice. Thanks

A premier cruise is one that is offered by the Ocean Players Club to high rollers. You usually just pay the taxes to cruise. They give you casino money. I've heard it is $750. You get free drinks while in the casino, a cocktail party and other goodies.

Actually, depending on the offer specific to the person, you still might have to pay cruise fare - just get a discount. For the latest offer, it was 50% off (but I think that is off of the "brochure" fare) and the amount of cash varies depending on your last cruise (or history if a high roller).

My wife gets the offers all the time and we went on one last year.

Very nice as the discount, free drinks and invites to the shindings are for everyone in the same cabin, but not the cash however.

What an awesome collection!
Thanks, but that is a mere sample of what I hold in three albums here at home.

Unfortunately GOOGLE has now fiddled with the Photobucket site over the years

to the point where I now have difficulty with functions and understanding where everything is,

and so I rarely upload anything different,

because it's now too much of a pain in the neck to bother!

Photobucket no longer even vaguely resembles the website I started with, some years ago.

Thanks a lot GOOGLE!

Very nice thread about different sign and sail cards. Thanks for posting.

Please consider donating any old/spare cruise-cards you come across at home

that you might need to clear out.

Every now and then folks send me stunning cards I never even knew existed!

They trickle in, one by one and two by two,

and this is how I've assembled the collection over the years, thanks to individuals like you

who pop a few old cards into the Mail! :)

If you're worried about personal data on the cards...

1. there isn't much there in the first place

2. Run a fridge magnet across the card's mag-stripe to void ALL info, before sending to me.

Thank you for your interest.

  • 4 years later...

wow, a very old thread rejuvenated, lol. I found my S+S card from my first and only cruise in 1997. Started cruising again 2 years ago, so I now have a total of 3 cards, lol. Nothing different than what Cooltj just posted. How would I post the picture here if I wanted to?
