Any One Else care About Getting Off Ship

when on shorter stay cruises, you get the most in, but when on longer stay cruises, there will be a day/port you just say, it's a rest day. let all run rapid, we'll go at our pace. and we did that two days of the 12 day cruise. No regrets at all.

Ate Breakfast, walked off, to the local duty free shops, came back on board, relaxed around, before you knew it the day was up. Sometimes booking an afternoon excursion is more relaxing as well.

On the roll calls, everyone is running around trying to book tours and make plans.

Are there others that feel that they don't want to stress planning an excursion, you enjoy staying on an empty ship and a 90 min+ bus or van ride

to a tourist spot sounds like torture?

Like to hear your comments.

PS_ is ther a way to edit thread title? Should say Not getting off ship

I stay on the ship. Easier to relax and take it easy with my walker. Too many excursions involve walking on cobblestone streets or up and down hills for miles. I love ships!

depends on the port. I am not a fan of tender ports for a few reasons, the 'private islands' hold less than zero interest to me and you couldn't pay me to get off anywhere in Mexico.

but yes I will get off in other places although you won't necessarily see me scheduling the entire time.. we like to wander around the pier, maybe hit a particular spot.. for us this past September it was a zoo in St John.

next April I will go against my 'no tender' rule and hit Monterey.. I used to live there and I miss it greatly so am itching to go back. I'll even hang out in San Francisco even though I have BTDT and most of the must see's like Alcatraz.

Are you on the century March 28-April 5 cruise with me?

There are a number of Caribbean ports where we mostly just stay on the ship now. We have visited most of the ports multiple times and have done the major sightseeing things. We don't need any T-shirts or knick-knacks and don't want to lug liquor home on the plane. If I want jewelry I will buy it at home. We like being able to sleep late and have a leisurely breakfast, maybe play some trivia or lounge by the pool. Sometimes we will get off the ship just to walk around a little or will take a taxi to the beach. If we go to a new port, we will usually book a tour on our own.

My thoughts exactly. DH and I have been on quite a few caribbean cruises and seen just about every island. Our cruise coming up in December has Jamaica in the itinerary. We've never been there but to be honest after researching it, I think I will be staying on the ship that day. Often we like to rent a car and take off on our own and explore the non touristy areas. I have health issues and a mobility problem, so I really have to decide where I expend my energy (what little I have!) Right now I am dealing with a broken foot and hope it will be healed before we leave. Since we have the drink package on this cruise, the idea of sitting on a lounge chair with a good book and some delicious drinks sounds heavenly.

I hope you recover soon and are well enough to make it to the bar for your cocktails /drinks in the evening as well.:D

For certain Caribbean type ports I would stay on the ship depending on the weather or if I enjoyed the port in a previous cruise. For example, I'm considering staying on the ship when mine goes to San Juan. I'll look at the options when I'm on the ship. I love sea days -- in good weather. I've on been on one Mediterranean cruise, and there's no way I would have intentionally stayed on the ship in a port -- because I was there to do sightseeing.

We had to tender into Juneau last time we were there and instead of the hassle, even though it is a lovely port, we had the most marvelous time hanging out on the ship all by ourselves. I mean, I think we were the only 2 passengers that decided to stay onboard. It was lovely!!

Now, there are some places I really want to experience and sometimes like to take a tour -- but it is becoming less and less important to run all over in some of the tourist trap areas.

Even in ports where we have been before, we would always go ashore just to have a bit of a leg stretch and maybe run some errands (wifi). Of course we may have a very relaxed morning prior to getting off and may only be ashore for an hour or two before returning to the ship for a relaxing afternoon on board.:D

I always do something in each port. DH and I did 8 cruises in 6 yrs before he passed away in Aug. '08. Now I cruise with friends or relatives who have not cruised before or not been to the same ports, so it's fun for me to do excursions with them. Being the leader is empowering for me. They appreciate my experience and recommendations. I enjoy their seeing things for the first time.

Next cruise is Jan. 26th to the W. Carib. on Solstice, a new ship for all of us. My roomie is my DH's sister. The other two are a HS friend and a newer friend from the Senior Center, who has cruised with me before. This will be the 3rd year in a row I have sailed with 3 others. It's a lot of fun, sort of like a week-long slumber party.

i think i'm opposite of most, i have cruised quite a bit and the more i go the more i prefer to get off the ship-i get very bored on the ships since have kind of done it all. once in a while i'll stay on but even in the caribbean no matter how many times i've been to an island i love taking a cab to the beach and enjoying the gorgeous water -- maybe it's because we dont have it in ny. i try to book cruises more for the itinerary and try to limit sea days unless it's a longer port intensive cruise when i need a break. i love the idea that a cruise can take you to so many exciting ports in one trip, without having to plan as much, i don't stress over excursions and would prefer not to do the 90 minute ride unless i felt it was really worth it. i do lots of land trips also but i particularly love the evenings on a ship, meeting up with so many fellow passengers and discussing the day, and going from venue to venue without having to take a cab (and being able to carry your drink ;) ). the great thing about cruising is everyone can do their own thing :)

I was reminded by my wife Joni, that even when we "stay" on the ship, we have always wandered ashore for an hour or two....

But as you say MicCanberra,it's really just to have a bit of a leg stretch and maybe run some errands :D

we stayed on board in israel due to a friends illness and it was heaven - until approximately 200+ travel agents got on board, started eating from the buffet by picking it up with their fingers then putting their fingers into another pile of food then a group proceeded to come outside and sit where they liked to smoke

ruined my day, then an officer scolded them all so it got better

We have booked one next summer where we plan to book no trips, having been to all the ports before - our plan is to hang around, relax in the quiet, go ashore for a nice lunch etc

In the Caribbean the ship is my destination. A totally relaxing trip. we did a back to back 21 day cruise and got off the ship 3 times. My life is hectic and the chance to just chill and be waited on, while soaking up the sun, reading, eating and drinking is "my cup of tea"!

I hope that the TAs all got their priveleges revoked and were escorted off to the naughty room pronto.

I LOVE staying on the ship when everyone else gets off for the day! On our last cruise we only got off one time and that was because we were at the private island. Nothing like quiet time around the pool in the afternoon!

My next cruise we are going to all new islands but I haven't made a single plan for any of them. I really just enjoy the ship life and the sea, oh so relaxing!
